This lens has been on my wish list for too long. I finally bought one a month ago. The pitfall of waiting for a long time to get something is that expectations can build up and can exceed reality. Fortunately, this lens has met or exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to get out and play with it more!

A range of 100-400mm and image stabilization allowing for hand-held shooting at 400mm make this a wonderfully versatile lens.

Bought to shoot Baseball games and it is great indaylight situations but night games was not great.Im not sure why but it is not consistant in auto focusing. When it all comes together(in daylight) the shots are magnificent. The slide type of zoom took time to get use to as I was use to my 70-200 2.8(which is good in light and low light situations) but once I did I love it

Watch out for the mounting collar

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

My lens has been to Canon twice after coming lose from the mounting collar. I feel the lens is not as sharp now because of dropping onto concrete.

This mounting collar is on most Canon L lenses. Haven't had a problem with the 70-200mm. I feel the collar is Canon's liability, very weak.

Have submitted a football action photo which was HDR processed. Comment was background (Stadium) wasn't blurry enough. I agree.

I have used this lens at weddings to keep from blocking family and guests.

Lens is very versatile, not needing to carry two bodies. I use it primarily on my 40D to get the additional focal length. The EOS 1ds, Mark III is my primary camera.

I bought this for a trip next month to yellowstone. I've used it, both hand held and on a monopod, and taken shots that turned out very well. The auto focus is very fast. So far I'm very pleased.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

I'd actually give this lens 4 1/2 stars if I could. While not "perfect" (is anything?), I really like it so far. Have only had it a couple weeks now, and used mostly for sports photography. The main negative is the fact that it's heavy. This was not really a problem for me, though, and I was able to get sharp action photos even while handheld (ballparks did not allow tripods/monopods in the stands). Other reviews have mentioned the push/pull zoom as a negative, though my previous telephoto zoom was also this style so it's what I'm used to. Wasn't initally sure how I felt about buying refurbished - looked brand new out of the box, no problems. Overall, a great lens!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

Purchased a refurbished version of this lens and discovered that the focus ring would not go to infinity. Returned it and exchanged for a new lens, which i am happy with. Figured that at this price point saving roughly $100 on a refurbished vs. new lens was penny wise and pound foolish. Idea of refurbished is good but make sure you fully test the lens [...]

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

I haven't had many opportunities to use this lens heavily yet, but when I have used it I've had mostly good luck with it. Right now the limitation is in my camera, since I'm still using a Rebel XT for now. However, I've seen a definite increase in the sharpness and contrast of the shots I've taken, compared to the 70-300 I was using, and the auto-focus is so quiet there are times when I have to change my focal point in the frame just to be sure it's working. Sure it's heavy, that's a drawback to any big lens that you should expect, so I do keep my monopod handy.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

As most people have said this is a great lens. I have had the lens now for about 2 weeks, and no regrets in buying it. I love my 70-200 f4.0 IS, but wanted something with a little more reach. I like to sit back and watch things from a distance, and I shoot the same way. This lens lets me do that, at a price I can afford. If your comfortable with the price and need a little longer lens, buy it. The slide zoom is pretty easy to get the hang of, and I think on a lens this size it is probably easier. Had no issues with it being refurbished. The glass looked pristine, with new case, lens hood and manual. Adorama delivers again!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

I put off buying this lens, opting instead for the 400f5.6L prime thinking it would be sharper, but sharper is no good if the shot is blurry or you can't get close enough. The prime is unusable without a tripod on all but the sunniest days, but I always get the shot with my 100-400L.
Handheld, near, far it doesn't matter. This lens rocks. Trying to decided, 70-200 w/ TC, 300f4L w/ TC, 400f5.6L, no, no, no, just get this lens, no regrets.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM AutoFocus Image Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lens - (Refurbished By Canon U.S.A):

my only regret is listening to the naysayers and not buying one sooner. I missed a ton of shots with my 400f5.6L by not having IS and a closer minimum focus distance. I see minimal IQ difference in the two lenses and the zoom yeilds a lot more keepers.
