This lens is compact, light-weight, has good construction, and is easy to handle. The lens does not lengthen externally while zooming. 10mm is wide enough that I can capture a 300 foot tall redwood tree from a short distance away. I have also caught a 75 story tall building from across the street. This lens can also be usfull for getting bends in a river canyon. If too much foreground or sky is distracting, just crop off the top and bottom, now you have an impressive panoramic without stitching multiple images together. The 3.5 becomes f4.0 around 13mm, and 4.5 at 18mm. This makes this lens a little slow in it's longer focal lengths, but faster crop ultrawides have shorter zoom ranges. My lens was refurbished from Adorama, I have had no problems with it. The price savings, compared to a new one in a retail store, allowed me to be able to buy this excellent lens. The distortion is very low. I got this lens and XSI camera around the same time, I rarely used Digital Photo Pro software that came with the camera to correct for distortion. When I did, I could barely notice a distance. I gave a 4 star rating instead of five because the longer focal lengths of this lens are 4.5, which sometimes gives me a problem in low light, IS would be good to compensate for this. The rating software did not allow me to rate it 4 1/2 star, or I would have.

I would not buy this lens if I wanted straight lines.

I'm a relative newbie to the SLR scene but I can say I absolutely love this lens. Purchased on a recent trip to NY and my night shots of Times Square were amazing. Of course the day shots were superb as well.
Also, if you're fretting about Refurbished items, don't. My purchase was of one and it performs just like a new one!

After looking at several wide angle lenses, settled on this one and never regretted it! Great sharpness and detail for a wide angle lens. But even greater contrast and colors for a lens that's not an "L Series". Hood is a must with focal lengths this short. Don't really see any need for a polarizer with this one.
Great piece of glass!

I have to say that this is very close to be an L lens. It is light, well built and the focus and zoom are as smooth as the two other L lens that I own. It has a slight amount of vignette and barrel distortion as 10mm, but, Wow, it's 10mm. It is very sharp which makes the center of the lens a bit pixel starved as distance objects are made smaller. No fault of the lens. You will have all the advantages of full frame without owning one. Every 1.6 owner should at least consider this one for there wide angle needs. Needs thin filters and a hood.
