This is an excellent lens for cropped-frame cameras. It is sharp in the middle and distortion is well controlled. However, it lacks corner sharpness and autofocus is poor especially in low light through much of the zoom range.Still, this is not a problem at 22mm. Usually, I manually focus this lens, especially at night using the live-view mode on my 60D.My three most viewed photographs are made using this l[@]

I bought this lens more or less for Weddings that take place in churches that have very narrow settings, and in some case you have to 22 people across the front of the Pulpit area and wihtout this lens it was just impossible to get the full feel of the church and the excietement of the moment , I love how you can stand a few feet away from two dozen lovely young women and get every smile, They turn out so crisp and I dont have to crunch everyone into a huddle and I dont end up with me bieing half way bacvk the the church Isle and 5 pews starring me in face, the photo below is my home which is nearly 90 foot wide and 20 feet tall and Im standing 15 feet away to get this shot, so its worth every dime and i do use a polarizer which is best to use between 11-22 due to a bit of dark fall off, thats with added glass though, Now the truth is this lens has every bit of glass that is any of the L glasses I have right down to the piece ,except without altering the baffle on the back it doesnt fit the wide body cams, so those are Canons words and mine too,I gave less for the lens at [...]

Great lens built by Canon. Have only shot a few times with it, but I'm getting consistent quality, which is superior to my other lenses. About as wide as you can go without using a fisheye. Not getting any vignetting at edges either which my other lenses tend to do if racked out all the way.

This thing is just plain fun to use. An ultrawide lens really opens a lot of creative possibilities.

___PROS___
- Excellent image quality; this lens is sharp.
- Horizontal angle of view goes from 54 to a whopping 98 degrees. (Shoot in portrait orientation, and you include both the horizon and your toes in the photo.)
- Close focus distance.
- Fun!!! You'll take a lot of photos.

___CONS___
- Some vignetting when set to 10mm, but that is just the nature of an ultrawide.
- Pricey for a non "L" lens.
- In the 10 to 14mm range it can be very tricky to keep the fisheye distortion under control when composing a photo, especially when the subject is close to the lens.

___Summary___
Obviously this is a specialty lens, not an everyday walk-around lens. It is challenging to master but very fun to use.

I bought this lens for a trip to the Grand Canyon, I needed something wider and better than my 17-85. This lens did the trick, extra wide, no noticible distortion at the wide end, super sharp images. The 3.5 max f-stop is not a problem as I use this lens almost entirely outdoors for landscape. Image quality is outstanding, be careful attaching filters unless you use a thin or something designed for super-wides you will get dark corners.

Combining this with a XSi is a winning combo. I went from the 18-55 mm kit to a 50mm fixed length + this 10-22mm lens. What a difference!
At 10mm you can obtained wonderful wide-angle effects for beautiful landscapes or buildings. At 12 to 22, this lens becomes a nice but not excessive wide angle with very good all around results. The lens is fast enough to be used indoor without a support and turns a small room into a palace.
Please note: XSi + 10-22mm lens do not fit the Zing Large SLR Case.

You know, I REALLY wanted to love this lens. I didn't.
The image quality was fine ... I just didn't care for the super wide angle.
After almost 200 images I realized that it wasn't giving me what I wanted in my wide angle photography - a sense of being 'there'. The best way I can describe the images is - Lack of Intimacy. Even working with foreground - shots just felt detached.
Additionally, I found that the images I did like (yes, there were some) were shot at 17 to 20 mm where the f-stop became 5.6 - so, I exchanged this lens for the 17-40 4L (better aperture) and am SO HAPPY with that lens I cant even tell you.
It wasn't practical for me to have a lens that gave me images I liked 'sometimes' - the 17-40 is great lens ALL THE TIME.

I did a lot of research looking for a wide angle because I was going to Pebble Beach for the Concours and Monterey Historics Races. I knew with the crowds that I would have to get in close to get great shots of the cars. After viewing the results of my shots I am very happy with my choice of lens. I could not have acheived the results with a standard lens. The clarity is great and I got everything I wanted. The 10mm-22mm was just what I needed for the car shots up close.

Don't get me wrong I love this lens, but you will not want to wear it out by shooting more than about 10% of your general images with it. Any curvature in the scene or landscape is going to POP with this lens. It gives a very unique perspective, not a fisheye but not a prime wide either.

I use this on an XTi and a 40D. I originally purchased the Canon EF-16-35 f2/8L USM and found it not to be wide enough. This one is!! This lens does have a learning curve but it is fun to explore with. Skies are big and colorful. I love this lens. Fast focus, sharp. Too bad it got damaged only a week after buying it. My fault, didn't zip my camera bag before pulling it out of the car. My XTi crashed to the ground, lens first. Hopefully Canon can repair it.

A great lens. Absolutely no problems using it so far. Only one issue and that was finding the sweet spot for manually focusing for night shots, that only took a few a shots to figure out. Well worth the money.

This was an addition to my 17-55 and 70-200 lenses (both are f/2.8). I've used the 10-22 on interior shots of buildings and people. Flash is needed more often when taking people shots because of the f/3.5; this can cause some "missed" candid opportunities. For landscape shots, it has worked great. Taking photos of house landscaping, or wider shots of mountain ranges is greatly helped with the wider field.

This is the first lens I bought for my 40D beyond the 28-135mm kit lens. As a newbie to the DSLR market (but not the SLR world!), I knew going in that 28mm was going to feel limited on the wide-end, so I did my research on various review sites. I concluded it was worth to spend the extra on the Canon 10-22 and bypass the cheaper Sigma extreme-wide-angle route.

Let me say that this lens is absolutely amazing at doing what it purports to do. Fast and accurate focusing. Great pictures. Minimal barrel distortion on the wide side (10-14mm range).

However, this is definitely a niche-market lens. If you are a new or casual user, keep in mind that this lens will not give you length at all.

I like this lens and will profit from what it has to offer. In hind sight, I think I might have been better off getting the 17-55mm f/2.8 lens first, which most regard as the best all-around EF-S lens ever made. It's about 300 hundred bucks more than the 10-22 (so it's not cheap!), but probably more what I was actually looking for, given the kind of photography that I generally enjoy the most. I don't really want to take pictures down in the 10-15mm as much as I do in the 17+mm range. For the extra money, the 17-55mm gets you IS (image stabilization), a wider aperture (especially on the wide end!), and a little extra length thrown in for good measure.

Translation: this lens (the 10-22mm) works great outdoors, not so great when the lighting is limited. This lens drops to f/4.5 in the 17-22mm, versus the 17-55mm lens at a constant f/2.8 through out. That difference alone makes the extra 300 bucks worth it, if you think you'll be doing indoor photography more than outdoor.

Notice I still give the lens 5 stars, because the lens in the 10-22mm range is about as good as I've seen anywhere. You just need to realize this is really for those that are wide-angle enthusiasts. I say this more for the casual user or DSLR newbie, since the semi-pros and pros would already know right away what this lens can and cannot do with their cropped DSLR's.

Personally, I plan to keep it....and quickly add the 17-55mm f/2.8 to my lenses as soon as possible. Unless you really want a super-wide angle lens, I'd suggest you consider getting something like the 17-55mm.

Great image quality, light weight, and minimal distortion. I think it'll be a great lens that really helps to deal with the crop factor of the 40D, my other lens are 2.8L's so its lighter and it doesn't feel to be as well built. But there hasn't been a problem, just an observation. Due to its wide view it requires a thin filter.

I also use a Canon 24-105 L lens, but with the 1.6 sensor ratio on the Digital Rebels (300D & 350D) the 24mm position wasn't really wide angle. With this 10-22 mm lens, I'm covered, and very happy with the results.

I took a couple of pictures as soon as the lens arrived and it made my room look bigger than it really is. Love the effect that it has when you tilt the lens off from your subject. You can get alot of your subject withing the field of view at its maximum wide angle.

I bought this lens to use for landscape photos. It is easy to use and has better specs than similar lenses of the same focal lengths. Yes, it's a bit more pricey than say, the Sigma lens, but the images are sharper, focus fater and quieter, and it's a bit faster that the Sigma. I also heard reports of non-Canon lenses not communicating with the camera bodies accurately.

I got this lens primarily for architectural work and have found it more than adequate – definitely the best ultra-wide available for a crop body. The center sharpness is just OK, but to my eye, it's uniform all the way to the corners. Looks great in prints.

It does have the same issue as the 17-55 2.8 IS, though, in that the construction just feels shoddy compared to an L-series or even my 50/1.4. It always feels a little depressing to spend $700+ on a lens that's mostly plastic.

If you shoot with a Canon APS-C (Digital Rebel, Canon 20D/30D/40D), and you enjoy shooting grand landscapes, you need this lens. Search the web, and you'll find nothing but good reviews.

Because of its extreme wide angle (16mm equivalent), it's also useful for taking interior photos, where you don't have the option of stepping back to get a wider view. However, at f/3.5-4.5, it's not a fast lens, so you may need to dial up the ISO or use a tripod or an external flash (the pop-up flash is too low, and will cast shadows with a lens this wide).

My previous wide-angle lens was a Sigma 15-30mm. Advantages this lens has over that, aside from being much wider, include smaller size and lighter weight, and compatibility with screw-on filters (the Sigma requires a rear gelatin filter). For shooting landscapes, this is particular important, as a circular polarizer is a must. Be sure to get a low-profile filter, or you'll risk vignetting, particular at the 10mm end of the zoom range.

With a 77mm filter diameter, filters won't be cheap (expect to pay $150+ for a circular polarizer this size), but you can maximize that investment with step-up rings, and use filters for this lens on smaller diameter lenses, as well.

I swore to myself I'd never buy a EF-S lens, and honestly I have a difficult time investing in non-L lenses. However, one of the favorite pictures of my car was taken by a friend using this lens and I had read that it has L glass but with "standard" construction. I believe the L glass claim because the results are outstanding with this lens. The wide angle is HUGE! I never dreamed I could be standing arms length LITTERALLY touching a tree that was about 16' tall by 20' wide, yet capture the whole tree in the frame at 10mm. This thing is just nuts on my Canon XTi small sensor camera. I absolutely love this lens. I won't live without this lens, nor will I travel without it. It is a fantastic investment and a great joy to use.

Before I bought this lens, I read that some people complained about barrel distortion at 10mm. What lens wouldn't give barrel distortion at that focal length? It's a great lens if you were used to shooting with your 16-35mm f2.8 on your full frame film camera and you want to allow your 20D or 30D to do the same. All my lenses are Canon L, so my only "complaint" would be that the aperture changes when zooming from 10 to 22, and if you are shooting in M mode, you just have to remember to adjust your shutter speed. Never had to think about that with the fixed 2.8 before. But I love this lens b/c I can shoot like I used to before Digital went ahead and shrunk that sensor.

This is my first ultra-wide angle zoom, and it opened a new world of seeing. It is everything I expected: sharp, excellent color, fast and quiet focusing, and as a bonus, it's light weight. I really like this lens. I have not found the f3.5-4.5 lens speed to be a hindrance. My only knock against it is that it should come with a lens hood.

Great sharp pictures.
Nice when experimenting with different angles and perspectives, gives you a new view to known things.
City landscape, mountain landscape (especially when shooting with foreground object) --- results in sharp and amazing photographs.
