Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

Recently went to Bosque Del Apache wildlife preserve. I wanted to be able to get closer to the Sandhill Cranes. It took me two days to figure out how to get the best focus. The auto focus won't work with my 100 - 400 mm lens even though that lens was listed as retaining auto focus.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

Inexpensive way to add versatility to your kit with out the added expense and weight of another L series lens - I've paired this with Canon's 300mm f/2.8 IS USM - I don't notice any significant loss in sharpness or autofocus speed and the 1 stop speed reduction is a small price to pay compared to the the equivalent stand alone lens - very happy with the purchase

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

It's not a substitute for a 300mm lens. I used it on my Canon 70-200 f2.8 and was not satisfied with the results. Colors were bland and very diffucult to focus on sports. It might be ok for still work, but I don't shoot that. I'm going back to cropping.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I purchased the 1.4 Extender to use with my Canon 70-200mm 2.8L lens photographing birds in my yard and at my feeders. I have also used it photographing bighorn sheep in Colorado. I have taken several hundred photos and am very satisfied with the performance of the extender.

The auto focus is fast and accurate and the IQ is very good. It is an excellent match for the lens at the distances I am photographing birds. Actually better than I expected bringing in the bighorn sheep. I can not wait for the humming birds to return next summer. I anticipate excellent results from the lens/extender combination.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

Instead of carrying a longer lens (or buying a longer lens) I decided that this bad boy would fit easily in my gear bag (cheaper alternative as well). I'm generally a landscape shooter so I'm generally shooting at a very high apeture (at least F/18) so the one stop of lost light doesn't impact me.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I use the extender for shooting live action sporting events, specifically college soccer. The range extension is great: expanding 70-200 by 1.4 really makes a difference. The trade-off is a slower autofocus time -- the camera/lens/extender take longer to focus on the subject you want, which can cause missed shots. But I'm new to the product, so I'm still learning. The loss of focus is greater at night, and not so noticeable during daytime events outdoors.

makes your 70-200mm Canon L lens a 98mm-280mm zoom, or on a Canon Rebel body a 156mm-448mm lens...you lose only one f/stop. It is small, lightweight but ruggedly built, you will hardly know it's there...I can see no optical degradation using this extender. Highly recommended!

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

It works pretty good with my 70-200 2.8. If you have the dough you are better served with the 100-400 5.6 canon lens for the focal length. I want to try it on the 135 2l lens to see how it works. When the auto focus works it works well but you do lose a stop. No big deal outside, not sure how it will work inside at the hockey rink.

I bought this with the f/2.8L IS USM 70-200 lens. I use it for sports mainly. I can get excellent shots all around a soccer field, using 1/2500 and faster, no problem. I plan on getting a 2x extender very soon to give me even a little bit further reach. An excellent accessory for the "L" series lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I used it for a while with my 70-200 f4/IS. It works great and produces very sharp and clear images. I tested it on a tripod - and found no problems at all. Better than cropping an image taken without an extender.

You need a lens that is at least f/4 fast, if you want to use the AF, that is a fact (but there is a "tape hack" for that). You lose one stop, indeed - this is just physics (actually - geometry). Those who complain about the 1 stop loss simply do not understand what f/4 or f/5.6 means.

The Canon 1.4X Extender gives that little extra reach to an already excellent zoom with minimal compromise to quality or usability. The loss of one stop is a reasonable compromise I think.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I have been using this on my Canon 300mm f/4 lens and have taken many excellent shots. I particuarly like to extract details from the landscape with it. It can be a challenge to get sharp images at slower shutter speeds since the extra connections add a little play to the setup. Placing a small sandbag on the lens does help (as does the mandatory heavy duty tripod).

This teleconverter is as sharp as the Nikon version I had used previously. The autofocus works and, all in all, this really is a no-brainer purchase.

No image degradation that can be determined through pixel examination.

A must have companion to the Canon 70-200 F2.8 lens. Given the minimal price difference with third party vendors, this unit integrates with the camera to give correct exposure (1 f-stop loss), aperature and lens EXIF data automatically, whereas others do not.

Hands-down winner.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I mostly shoot soccer. I use the product with the 70-200 USM 2.8L IS (IS off for soccer). Those who can't tell the difference must be blind. I was disappointed to see the L quality deteriorate to an average (at best) lens quality. I'd hate to see the 2X results. The other thing I hate is the lock at 4.0 from 2.8. I expected less light, but not the inability to try to get there. If I wanted 100-300 5.6 quality, I could have saved the money.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I use the 1.4 extender to give myself more reach from the sidelines capturing local baseball and football games. I combine this with a 70 to 200 zoom on an EOS 20D so with with the sensor size multiplier I have almost 400 mm reach (I don't fell like doing the math). Daytime outside the 1 stop loss is no issue - I am still capturing the baseball coming off the bat perfectly. Picture quality has remained excellent.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

If you start out with a great, fast "L" lens, this 1.4 converter will make your day. Using Canon's 1.4-1.6 FOV camera bodies are great for making a medium zoom reach out quite abit further. The 1.4 converter adds a stop, but I haven't noticed any loss of detail or sharpness in my photos. With my Canon D30, 70-200L F/2.8 IS lens and the 1.4 converter I end up with a great, sharp F/4 156mm-448mm zoom. I would have loved to have had this setup when I was shooting high school sports.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

Bought it to use with my Canon 100-400 IS, 4.5/5.6 lens for wildlife photography. I immediately discovered that the autofocus would not work with this combination. (a little googling would have told me that, I guess...)

Manual focus works fine with this combination, but for wildlife and with my poor vision, manual focus does not cut it.

If you are ready to use manual focus for slower lens groups or have a 2.8 or faster lens, the autofocus works fine. I have also heard that taping two of the contacts on the lens allows the autofocus to work with slower lenses, but cannot confirm that.

I would recommend this extender, but only if you are OK with the above limitation.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - USA:

I bought a Canon 500 f/4 L IS USM in summer 06 along with a 30D and the Canon 1.4x TC. The tele extender works realy well with the 500 lens, auto focus is still very fast and the IS is spot on. For what it cost and weighs makes this unit a must have in the bag. I shoot birds (with a camera) as well as surfers; the results are sharp, crisp images with good colour rendition and I only loose one stop, which is fixed by setting the ISO up one stop, a very small compromise when you consider the 500 is now a 700. I can't see any image deteriation using this product. For what it does and what it cost, I can't do with out it.
