Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I have been shooting Canon equipment for thirty years. I have always been pleased with the quality and performance of their equipment. Not so this time. I buy L lenses because I believe you usually get what you pay for. Not this time. I bought this lens when I moved up to a full frame sensor (5D II) because I could no longer use my 10-22. This lens is soft at the edges. I realize that this is a relatively inexpensive lens for an L lens, but I think it should be sharp edge to edge. I suspect that this may not be a problem for bodies that are not full frame.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I was looking at the Canon 14 mm wide-angle lens to complement the 24-105 zoom on my 5D MkII. But, the price put me off. I looked at photos I'd taken with the Canon 10-22mm lens on a 50D (16-34 mm equiv) and decided that 14mm was wider than I needed. This observation and the very attractive price of the 17-40 caused me to give it a try. After one 10 day outing including Death Valley and a drive up Hwy 395 in CA, I'm very happy with my decision. 17mm is wide enough for my landscape work and 40mm was great for indoor family shots of my grandkids and even some backyard shots.

While this lens may not be quite as sharp as the far more costly 14mm fixed lens, it's still sharp enough to be called a "pro" lens.

As you would expect from a Canon L lens, it is a solid piece with velvet smooth zoom and focus controls. In these respects it is very similar to my 24-105L zoom.

Excellent lens if your on a budget, bought to replace the kit lens on my 40D. on the con side f4 indoors sometimes leaves you wishing for the 16-35 but at almost 1/2 the price you soon forget that fact and bump the ISO a bit.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

The only bad things I found about it is that the zoom ring is too close to the rear of the lens, what makes the operation of the ring in gripped cameras harder, and that you have to add a filter to complete the lens' weather sealing.

The hood is big because the lens was designed to be an UWA on Full Frame cameras, but it is quite useless on APS-C sensors. In such cases, you may want to buy the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8's hood, the EW-83J.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I did a lot of research before I decided on this lens.

I tried the 10-22mm and didn't love it. I found that I preferred shooting at 17mm and higher (where the f stop became 5.6) so I eliminated that one.

I shot with the 24-70mm 2.8 - which is a wonderful lens. Very bright. But it didn't go wide enough (for me) and it's expensive and a little heavy.

I thought about a wide angle prime lens and the reviews I read favored lenses that I couldn't justify spending that much on.

I saved the best for last. The 17-40mm 4L is a perfect fit for me. The focal range is exactly what I want. It's light. It's bright. The colors are fantastic and the images are crisp and sharp.

For indoor low lighting shots (which I typically shoot with a 50mm 1.4 prime) bumping up the iso saves the day. I dont shoot IS - i use a tripod or keep my shutter speed above 60.

It's a fantastic lens and worth every penny. The image quality never ceases to amaze me. With the savings from NOT purchasing the 24-70mm I purchased a 70-200mm to finish off my focal ranges.

Now I can spend my hard-earned cash to get to some great locations!
I cant recommend this lens enough.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I never thought I would use the lens as much as I do. Ranging from superwide to nearly "normal," it is a very useful lens for landscapes and those instances where an unusual perspective is desired. Because it is relatively light, I always have it with me. It is my fun lens and sometimes screams at me to use it. At f/4 it is not a fast lens, but since I am much more likely to stop it down than to shoot it wide open, it is perfect for my shooting style.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

Excellent Lens! The 17-40 I mostly use it for real estate photography on a 5D. I also use it for aerial pictures although it is a bit heavy for it.For interior shots it is great because you need not worry about the F/4.Image quality is also good. Weight for average use is good as well.It is good at wide 17, however there is distortion as you can see: [@] Look for the interior pictures. I have tried to eliminate distortion but I couldn't 100%I would recommend it.

Great lens with very precision and fast focus, giving beautifully sharp pictures.
There is small winieting on F4:17mm on my 5D, it
is not big deal but I highly recommend to use wide filters.
It is the best wide zoom on market for that price,
must have for landscape shots (FF), also fine on APS-C as standard zoom.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

Great general purpose lens. Is my first "L" lens and I must say that it is significantly sharper and has better color than my Canon 28-135 IS. The build is excellent. It is similar in size to the aforementioned lens, perhaps a bit smaller. Feels very solid, however. Focus is fast and virtually silent. Great close-focusing ability, which gives a unique perspective at 17mm on my 40d.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

There is a lot of choice if you want a general Canon walkaround zoom. However, if you have a crop body camera then the EF 24-70mm F2.8L and EF 24-105mm F4L aren't all that wide. At the consumer level there is the EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 or EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6. These focal lengths are useful but the lenses aren't L quality and they are a little slow. For crop bodies, the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS is a fast lens with Image Stabilisation but it is a little expensive and not quite built to L standards. The other alternative is the EF 17-40mm F4L. It isn't the fastest lens, neither does it have IS (which I haven't found to be necessary for this focal length), but it is a solid, well constructed lens that gives very consistent results. When I bought my copy some of the lenses mentioned above weren't available so it was a fairly obvious choice for me. Now though, there is more choice so the decision is more difficult. If I was buying now I think I would be very torn between the EF 17-40mm F4L, and the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS which is a stop faster, has IS, and is a bit longer.Of course, the other advantage is that the EF 17-40mm can be used on full frame bodies whereas EF-S lenses can't.After five years of ownership I am still very happy with my 17-40mm F4 L and it is the lens that lives permanently on my camera. It focuses consistently well and gives pleasing results. The focal range is useful and I don't miss having IS on this lens, as I would with my longer lenses. Some sample images here:[@]

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I've enjoyed everything about this lens. A tad heavy for long hand-held use, but that's minor considering its fast and accurate focusing, and broad range without distortion. I used to use only a fixed wide lens, but I haven't noticed any real loss of quality in the wide end, making adjustments very fast.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I spent a week using this lens shooting in northern Arizona and southern Utah and was overly impressed. Yes, it is not 2.8, and I did not spend time with it shooting inside. However, for landscape work, and anything else outdoors or on a tripod it is perfect. It is a very lightweight lens, easy to care, and you won't notice the weight in your bag or on the camera. It focuses quickly and sharply and produces excellent images.

If you are looking for something half the price of the 16-35/2.8 for outdoor or tripod use, and won't be shooting weddings in churches, I can't recommend this enough.

This is a fantastic L series lens for the money. Small and lightweight and yet built like an ox.

There is only one thing that people ‘need’ to be aware of.

At 17mm, this lens has serious noticeable distortions. Below 20mm I recommend using this only for special effects type shooting.

At 17mm wide angle distortion is unliveable.

This lens has quickly become my favorite lens at this focal range. I have found it to be super sharp, great for larger group and team photos and even in the studio for full length shots. Not good for up close facial or waist up shots because of the distortion. It is a great walk around lens for landscape photography.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

They often call this lens an "entry level" "L" lens. What you must understnd is, that's because it doesn't cost $1100, or more, like the rest of them. This lens produces sharp, contrasty photos, with frantastic color, from 17mm right through 40mm, And at f/4. Most lens have a sweet spot, I've owned many f/1.4s and f/2.8 lens that were so soft you had to stop them down just to get a sharp photo. This lens is great at f/4 and just gets better. Fast and quiet focus, just perfectFor a lot of people, it doesn't have much range. They want the 18-200mm or the 28-300mm, the "jack of all trade" lens. Look some of those lens produce decent photos, but not the quality this one does. It's designed to work in a specific range. It's perfect for landscapes. It's also a great walking around lesn, and you can get some sweet portrait with very nice brokh. You might have to get a little closer, but the results are worth it. Once apon a time, we all used 50mm lens, and they were legendary. people used them for all sorts of stuff. Well this baby is every bit as good as some of the best 50mm lens made. It's as good as my Leica 50mm f/2 was, and that says a lot.If you want to shoot sports, it's not the lens. It doesn't have the reach. If you want to shoot night scenes, you'll need a tripod, or maybe get a 50mm f/1.4 and hope for the best. Canon didn't put IS on this lens. I really don't think you need itAlso the lens deosn't extend when zooming. I love that. The 24-70mm f/2.8, the 24-105mm f/2.8 and many other extend during "zooming", but not this little tank. For what this lens range, I'd put it up against any other lens in the range, and win every timeYou won't be sorry with the 17-40mm, optically it porduces as good as any, and much better than most. Plus it doesn't cost you [$] like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8

This is a great lens in terms of excellent build quality, quick, silent focusing and constant aperture throughout its' zoom range. Another reason I purchased this lens is because L series lens retain their value when one is looking to change or upgrade. I would have purchased Canon's 16-35 2.8 L but it is twice the price of this lens and I am not able to pay that currently. I have the ability to upgrade to the 16-35 L later on for the speed of the 2.8 because I can get decent trade in value for the 17-40 L.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

With a 5D as the main camera, and a 40D as second camera, the 17-40 is an excellent choice in its role as super-wide zoom on the 5D, and crowd / group lens on the 40D while using the 24-105L on the 5D. Without the (rather conspicuous) hood the lens is discrete and understated, allowing for candid pictures in cramped locations.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I was looking for a lens that would be useable if I decieded to up grade to a full frame camera like the 5D. I have a 40d now and am getting good results with this lens.
I was a victim of the FD to EF lens switch over in the 90's and learned my lesson. I still use my F-1N, AE Finder and love it. I also still use my AE-1 with the power winder. I have a large assortment of lens for them which are unusable with the 40d so it is a large investment to replicate what I had in EF. I'm just trying to cover my butt this time.
That is why I almost went with the Nikon D300 since I had to replace all my lenses anyway. Their lenses fit everything they have made from the 50's on..
After much soul searching I decided to stick with Canon. Time will tell if I have made the correct decision. So far I think my old FD lenses appear sharper then the EF series, but I haven't had enough experience with the EF series to be conclusive.
I like the 17-40mm L on the crop frame camera: good colors, fast and accurate focus, built like a tank and weather sealed. IQ is good, CA acceptable, vignetting is non existant on a crop frame. Some distortion at 17mm, and a little soft at F/4.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I bought this lens for my Canon 40D as I wanted to duplicate the range of my 24-70mm on my Canon 5D body. On the 40D, this lens gives the 35mm equivalent of a 27-64mm lens. I usually use my 70-200mm on the 5D and the 17-40mm on the 40D, effectively covering everything from wide angle to close-ups without having to switch lenses.

This lens is so sharp and has such great contrast and colors that I find I'm not using my 24-70 as much (something I never thought would happen!)

On the 40D body, it's great, giving an extremely useful range - but on the 5D it's amazing! It becomes a very wide lens on the full-frame body and really encourages you to get in close to subjects and take pictures from a different viewpoint.

I've found this lens to be a must-have for event photography. I've photographed people on dance floors and close-up shots of bands on stage primarily, using off-camera flash to bring up the overall light level in both cases.

The lens itself is smaller and lighter than expected - much lighter than the venerable 24-70. It's extremely well-made and feels solid, in keeping with all 'L' lenses. It's also physically smaller than the 24-70, but still takes the popular 77mm filter size. All controls are smooth and reassuring, focus is fast and silent.
I am not a jpeg shooter, but those who do shoot jpeg should love the quality of the photos this lens will give them right out of the camera. Colors really shine and it's a sharp lens. I shoot in RAW format and I've found that this lens takes post-processing adjustments really well.

This is an f4 lens, though, so those looking for super low-light performance might want to look elsewhere. This is not a criticism of the lens, it's just a statement of what the lens was designed to do. I think it's awful that people list the fact that this lens only opens up to f4 as a 'Con'. It's like reviewing a car and dissing it because it doesn't drive well when you take two wheels off.

To sum up, this lens and the 70-200mm f4 lens are the darlings of the 'L' line for the budget-conscious photographer who wants truly professional results.

As wide angle zooms go, this one is best suited for a full frame camera. But, it makes an excellent all aroung lens for a crop camera. (It becomes about a 28-70mm on a crop body.) As in all of Canon's L series lenses, it is sharp and very well made. I find color rendition to be very accurate.

This lens was purchased to replace my Nikon 12-24mm when switching to the Canon 5D. The lens is relatively low cost compared to the 16-35mm f/2.8. I apreciate its compact dimensions. f/4 is sufficient for most of my photographic needs and the absence of IS is not a major drawback for this type of lenses and my use. It has clearly visible distortion barrel to pincushion as you zoom from wide to less wide. for critical recordings this can be removed by software such as DxO optics or other.

After a long research I decided to go with this lens as a regular walk-around lens. I would buy a faster lens (f/2.8L) but its still a little too expensive for me at this point. I have used it only for a day, and took some daylight shots and indoor shots. I love daylight shots quality, but indoor lacks light. And with f/4 is not bad but without ImageStabilizer alot of shots are little blurry (if tripod isn't used). But I still like the lens, and recommend it if you can't buy a [$] widezoom L lens.

I was a bit hesitant when I bought the 5D and had to swap to the EF 17-40mm from the EF-S 10-22mm which I was fully in love with. But it took me absolutely no time at all to fall in equally in love with this lens. The images, although not quite as wide as I would like being such and avid wide angle photographer, are stunning. The clarity brings me back to my film days and the range is perfect for everything I shoot wide-mid range. I highly recommend this lens to any and all who appreciate the aesthetics only a high quality wide angle can produce.

Having started with the Kit lens on a 300D bought a couple of years ago, I wanted to expand the range and image quality. 50mm and 85mm primes the exception, zooms are often the only practical solution, as you can't always walk backwards and forwards to get a great shot. The quality of image, sharpness and colour rendition are exceptional. As with most amateur users, one can only really comment on the end result and when the shots are good from this lens, they tend to be great. Besides, the most critical part of the camera is the bit between the ears!

This is an excellent 'knock-about' lens for APS sensor cameras. I use it frequently on my 20D. The lens focuses fast and provides sharp images with excellent color rendition. I have recently acquired a used 5D and find the focal length range less useful, but the images are still very good throughout the aperture and f/l range. The shade hood is somewhat bulky and unwieldy, but that is a small price to pay for a well constructed, L-glass lens at a reasonable price!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I picked this lens up because I was looking for something with a wide angle lens. I did the research and this was the best both in quality and dept of field.

It does everything I've asked it to do and focus is much easy to find than the sigma 70-200mm lens I also own. Even at normal 35 mil shooting shots this thing has great focus. It allows you to manual focus after auto focus if you decide you want to change your subject for a tweak here for there. This is a very nice feature.

Fo me the final decision here was it went from 17-40 as opposed to 10-20. 10-20 is nice, but it's not as adaptable to normal situations. You've got to switch lens, so this way I can get everything but a tight close up, so it works for many occasions.

It costs a bit more, but if you want to get those wide angle shots it's money well spent. Been using it for about 1 year and have taken it on 2 trips. It's durable and have given me some great shots. It works great indoors or out.

I think this lens has made me a loyal canon lens customer. Now I'm looking to go telephoto...

I used this lens for close to two years, with no complaints whatsoever. I stopped using it when I gave it to my mother, who still uses it quite a bit.

The image quality is pristine, as is usually the case for Canon's L lenses, and the autofocus is similary quiet and responsive. It does not have any visible barrel distortions that I have seen, but I have also not used it on a full-frame camera, only on a Digital Rebel. In spite of the crop factor, it is still wide enough to be a bit of a challenge to compose with, but when it works, it works well.

For the money, this is an excellent lens.

I have shot several thousand photos with this lens over the past few years and I would highly recommend it. I have never had a better wide angle lens. The fact that the filter threads match my other L-Series lenses is a definite plus. Some wide angle lenses only allow for gel type filters and have problems with distorion. Not this one. I use a 77mm thin line B+W polarizer without vignetting. I have never had serous problems with more than the usual curvature that is inherent with a wide angle lens. The only drawback is that it is a little more expensive than other non-Canon lenses. That's okay, I'll go for the quality of the Canon L-Series lenses over another brand any day. I have used this lens for weddings, nature and architectural photography. You won't be sorry with this one!

Great lens, great glass. I bought this on the reccomendation of a friend when I bought my 20D because he thought the 24-70 would be too heavy for an all-around lens. I thought it was a bit short for my style but thought the conversion factor would make up for it. For an all around lens, I think I would have preferred the 18-85 IS although it is annoying that it is an EF-Lens. Very durable, high quality lens if you need something in 17-40 range.

Price is reasonable for this great lens. It is easy to use and produces sharp photos to the edges without distorsions. Lens provides good degree of composition creativity. I havn't experience any down side to the lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

Great lens with the exception of low light situations, but I knew this when I bought it. If you need to rely on a built in pop-up flash, it won't clear the lens leaving a dark semi-circle at the bottom of your photos. No worries with the 580ex flash, or any other suitable external flash. It's not necessary to buy a wide angle thin glass filter if you are using a 20D, I get no vignetting at all with a regular filter. A great step up from the 18-55 ef-s. Sturdy construction, fast focusing, always tack sharp!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I've had the lens for some years. It has been mounted on several cameras including the Digital Rebel, the 1DS, and currently the 5D. I have been happy with the lens, and have no thoughts of replacing it. I've done some informal testing although nothing rigorous.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

This product has been dynamite, I have dropped it before, it escaped unscathed. The images are very sharp except that there is quite a bit of vignetting at 17-22 on my 5D. Other than that I don't have any complaints with this lens. I have used this for some very long night exposures and the results are excellent, as with all L lenses I continue to be pleansently surprised. I would recommend this lens to anyone from a new photographer to a professional.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

I found this to be a very nice lens and very handy for landscape photography. It is light and very easy to use.

When the sun shade is in its storage position the lens package becomes quite wide making it a little less handy for storage with your gear.

My only complaint is that if you buy and use the UV filter listed with the lens as an accessory, it does not allow the lens cap that comes with the lens to fit on properly.

Great "normal" lens on Rebel XT
By nitrocat2Verified Reviewer from Pensacola, FL on 10/4/2006
Pros:
Clear Glass, Easily Accessible Controls, Easily Mounted, Strong Construction
Best Uses:
Fun, Travel

Comments about Canon Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens with Case and Lens Hood - USA:

A bit soft wide open, nice and crisp by f/8. Zoom range makes it an ideal "standard" lens for the Rebel XT or any other digital Canon with the 1.6 crop factor. Focus and zoom controls are silky-smooth and auto focus is silent, accurate and almost instantaneous. Overall, Canon's "L" series lenses are as good as it gets...they're built like tank and boast superb optics. If you're looking to upgrade from the kit lens, this is an excellent choice. Serious glass.
