Comments about Canon Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens:

This was the first lens I ever bought for my Rebel XS. I wanted to upgrade for the kit lens to have a greater focal range than the standard 18-55mm lens. This lens is defiantly a super zoom lens, and on 1.6x sensor it's the equivalent of a 29mm to 320mm lens; a nice multipurpose range.

But that's where the pros end. For the price, the construction of this lens is not great; it's still plastic, though it does feel very heavy (positive and negative thing). Zoom creep is a problem where the lens will fall back down on its own weight with the barrel extended; and it extends quite far. The lens comes with a lock to keep the barrel from extending when not in use, but even that feels cheep and could break off with continued use.

Because of the extreme in zoom range, the lens is optically pretty disappointing. I never could get really sharp images at wide open aperture. It's o.k. a few stops up; around f5.6.

The worst bit that bothered me though was the DC motor focusing system. You would think in this price range, they would have equipped it with a USM focusing motor which works so well on other Canon EF and EF-s lenses, but no. Instead, the focus is slow and noisy; not acceptable for a lens costing this much. Even the manual focusing ring moves when auto-focusing.

I'm an amateur photographer, but even I could see the flaws of this lens easily. Needless to say, I returned it (Adorama was excellent throughout the whole process). If you want a good, travel, super zoom that can deliver optically solid photos at the wide and telephoto ends, this isn't it.

FIRST LENS PURCHASED FOR NEW 7D. VERY VERSATILE USE, FROM BACK YARD LANDSCAPE TO NEPHEWS FOOTBALL GAME UNDER THE LIGHTS. QUICK AUTO FOCUS AT DISTANCE AND CRISP PICTURES. IT IS A LITTLE ON THE HEAVY SIDE BUT DOES NOT TAKE AWAY FROM THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURES.

I like this lens. It is a bit loud but it takes great pictures. I like to do portrait photography and pictures of wildlife. It takes a little bit of time to focus on moving objects. I like the multifunction of the lens being 18-200mm so I can crop the photo as I like on far away subjects and keep them sharp. I took this lens to the zoo and took some great photos of the animals there.

I am so happy I purchased this lens. It is simply amazing. The image stabilization is just that: stable. I would definately recommend if you're a Canon user, newbie or old pro. I'm a believer in not having to swap lenses (prevents dirt in camera bodies for one) and I couldn't be a happier customer. Thanks Canon and Adorama!

I am a beginner, and wanted one lens to take on vacations. This one is great. I thought it might be too heavy, but had no problem carrying it, even on the Cliffwalk in Newport, which is quite rugged in places. The pictures, especially the night shots of the Pell Bridge were outstanding.

Comments about Canon Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens:

This lens was a replacement for my Sigma 15-125. It went to Africa with my 100-400, 500 f4.0 and 100 2.8 macro lens. Attached to my older body (20d), this lens was used for people, landscape, sunrise, sunsets and everything else I didn't shoot with the big lens. All went well. For a lens that covers 18-200, I was very pleased with the results. Yes, there is some distortion at 18mm and some softness at 200, but for a all in one lens, it is great. Good lens for the money.

I've carried a number of good lens on vacation only to find that they were a bother to those that I traveled with. This all in one lens is perfect for converting my Canon 40D into a high resolution snapshot camera. The pictures are far superior to an integrated camera and I no longer need the bulk of multiple lens while traveling or the risk of dust getting in the body because of outdoor lens changes. Highly recommended and built to the perfect price point.

Comments about Canon Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens:

I've been searching long for a decent quality lens to use with my Canon XSI that has more zoom range than the kit lens, so i can reduce the need to be swapping lens. (Tried the 28-135 but i use the closer-in 18-28 range too often to do without). While the 18-200 zoom range is great, image quality is disappointing. Even at the optimal f settings (5.6, 8), results are noticeably soft. Additionally, contrast seemed much poorer as well. When making these remarks, i'm comparing this 18-200 to canon's new 18-55 kit lens and the canon 55-250 zoom. These latter 2 lens deliver noticeably superior resolution and contrast, albeit with the need to swap lens. I don't consider myself terribly picky, but the poor image quality results of the 18-200 were easily noticeable. This impression is based on my review of approximately 500 images. Canon-Please upgrade your 17-85 lens to address the CA issues, and make it cost competitive!

Comments about Canon Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens:

not only does adorama have the best price- they are the most trusted photo site on the internet. this 18-200 lens is a legitimate superzoom lens.

canon probably didn't want to make this lens, but it is better than the competition. i have used many, many ef lenses- most all the f4 l lenses and probably all the nikon af lenses in the days of film.

sure, there is some distortion on the wide end, which makes it look wider than it is and the focus is a tad slower than true usm, but this is an incredible lens. i can shoot wide or tele, real telephoto, not just 100 all in one lens.

no strange abberations, some small blurriness at wide corners wide open, but decent contrast. the pictures are snappy, not f2.8 snappy, but because the aperature blades are round, the pictures mimic that snappiness. the images usm sharpen well and look super clean. i slapped on a 72mm nikon l31c and i leave the lens cap at home.

night performance is good- image stablilization is a must no matter what fstop. i tried using a 50mm 1.8, but i could not hand hold it even though theoretically the wide aperature should help. at night i can shoot as low as 1/6 and still get sharp shots. portraiture is also good with great background blur- very smooth. it also can focus closer than the competition- a pseudo macro lens. i wish they would make this in full frame, but it would be much heavier and much more expensive.

although, it will be difficult to get an 'f2.8 blur or a wedding portrait eye only focused', with the background far enough, it may look like it. i swear, it is such a fun lens- no more being limited by "better" lenses due to their wider aperature.

Bought this lens as an all around lens for my wife so she could take photos when we are on a photoshoot. She's using it on a 40D and the images have been great. I am used to the Canon Pro lens and it seems light and not made as well but that's because it doesn't have a metal housing. Focus is slower than the pro lenses but that is to be expected. Overall it is a great value.

Comments about Canon Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Auto Focus Lens:

I have been shooting with Canon digital for just over five years. A professional friend of mine told me to start with the 28-200 USM as a good all purpose lens and I loved it. I recently bought this one as an upgrade for that lens.

I have to say that the color is not quite where my L series lenses are. That being said, this is the lens that I have on my camera 80% of the time and it never disappoints. The focal range allows for almost any situation. I only change lenses when I have a specific shot I want (Macro, close-up sports shots, etc.)

As far as cons, the AF is a little touchy, but I find that to be the case on most lenses. I do wish it allowed for manual adjustment with the AF engaged.

As far as an upgrade from the 28-200, I think it is well worth the money. The IS system is a great addition to any lens. I feel like I have a steady hand, but with the IS I can take sharp pictures at ridiculously slow shutter speeds. It also has a lock feature on the lens that stops it from sliding. Anyone who carries one of these all day realizes that the lens expanding can be tiresome. I am very excited to be able to lock this lens in 18mm while it is around my shoulders.

Bought this as soon as it was available. Shot several thousand frames locally and in the Caribbean. Big improvement over the kit lens that came with my 40D. Extended focal length makes it a near perfect 'walk about' lens. Image quality is as good or better than the 28-235mm kit lens. I really like the solid feel to the zoom and the zoom lock is a very welcome addition. It's become my favorite GP lens. If you can only carry one lens - this will get you 90% of the shots.
