I got this lens to use on Gray/low light days and found that use it all the time (Extremely Sharp). It's great lens for photographing birds and add an extension tube it turns into a close up lens for nice flower photos. I like to set up (dial in the camera f stop and shutter speed) for unexpected opportunities--see my GBH shot below. The only caution I have is that this is 200mm and on a 1.6 crop body--you'll use your feet a lot.

It's pretty sharp and light weight. The best use would be with a tripod or a monopod. I've taken pretty sharp images with hand-held, too. I guess it depends on shatter speed and steadiness of your hands. You can use an extender with it and still produce a great image.

Bought this lens because I needed something no longer than 6 inches to take into a NFL stadium. My daughter is a NFL cheerleader and they have a limit of 6 inches for a lens. Very impressed with the sharpness and focus speed.

I love this lens, i take between 200-500 sports picks at Field Hockey games at night and day time. I had to make only one adjustment that was my shooting placement, i was use to a 75-300 mm lens and there is a surprise when you look through the eye piece, you need to step back a bit to get the entire person, but on the other hand it is great to get facial expressions during the heat of the moment. I would say this is a great lens, and recommend it to anyone.

I admit that this lens was cleary sharp and fast focus. Excellent lens.
But one thing is there is no IS, and 200mm bit shaky if u can not hold it right. After 2 days i bought this lens i returned and swap to 70-200mm F/2.8 IS, I know this lens is very heavy and expensive but this lens is the most photographer use and excellent sharp.
Should i recommend you 200mm lens ? Its depend what you using at, coz no IS. But i recommend stretch more time to save more money to get 70-200mm F/2.8 IS USM.

Used mostly for sports and birds. If you shy away from the prices of the big EF 200 and 400mm 2.8 lenses, this is for you. I usually have the Canon 1.4x on (which limits the largest ap to 4), but causes little noticeable degradation an clarity and still alows autofocus to work. Great buy.

I use this for kids sporting events and portraits. The background blur is great and I can shoot fast action and in low light, all thanks to the large aperture.

I shoot weddings with a Canon 5D Mark II - I originally bought the 70-200 IS f2.8 and it proved to be far too heavy for me to use over a long day - I'm a female about 5'2" - this probably wouldn't be a problem for a man with larger hands. I exchanged it for this and I love it ... on a full frame camera, I didn't see a big enough difference between the 70mm and the 200mm length if you still have to be a minimum of 3 feet from your subject.....just walk a little farther away with the 200mm prime, and you get the 70mm length. I own an 18-200mm zoom and I quickly learned that 200mm is my favorite length to shoot at. That was my other big deciding factor. Although the 135mm stops down much lower and would perhaps be more ideal for low light, I chose this one for its length and awesome price!

This the first "L" lens I have ever purchased and it is somewhat limited as a long prime lens but a true bargain for it's intended purpose. I have used it for weddings and plays and it has performed magnificently. It is quick to focus, colors are true and accurate and it requires very little, if any, post producton work if you do your part. I have used many of the L lens but for the money you can't beat the value especially when you consider it's F2.8. This is very important because I will not buy a lens that is slower than F2.8. It has been used with a 40D and an XSI and is incredible on either camera. I have experienced very little if any CA or vignetting.

AF on this lens is not the fastest, seems to belong to the previous generation. But still is among the test. Everything else is top notch. This is my only L prime, and it has the best IQ, so much better than the 100mm f/2.0, 135/f2.8 Soft Focus, or Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro. I use all of them for portrait from time to time. This L gives the best IQ every time, with unmistakable differences.

I buy this 200 2.8L 2 months ago to replace my 70-200 2.8L is
In the reason of the weight 200 2.8 much lighter and faster.
This 200 2.8L similar to 135 2.0L in term of bokeh, weight, price and size.
I shoot for wedding and portrait to get the beautiful background.
But if you decide to buy this lens, make sure you are not a person who's care about the zoom and happy to walk to find your distance.

I am constantly amazed at the image quality I get with this lens on my Canon XT/350D. This lens is focuses incredibly fast, has crystal clear, sharp detail, is bright and the colors are right on the money. It also works well in low light. Although slightly heavier than my other lenses, I am still able to take most of my pictures hand-held. Minimal loss of detail with my Kenko Pro 1.4X teleconverter. Since the lens is not a zoom, you will miss some picture oportunities, but will more than make up for that by taking a lot more impulse pictures because of the fast zoom. I use this as my general walk-around lens.

It's a prime lens so you need your feet to frame the shot right but the lens is super clear and the detail you get back is wonderful. I only shoot in RAW and my pictures look as good as any pro out there. Maybe cause the pros are using this lens too!

The sharpness of this lens if unreal. I can without a doubt tell the difference between a "L" series lens and a regular lens. I use it for macro, sports, wildlife and portraits. You won't be disappointed or broke if you buy this lens.

This has to be the sharpest lens I've ever used (barring med and large format). It's ability to resolve is far beyond the camera's (Canon 5D 12.8Mp) It's fast enough to be used at indoor sporting events and though a zoom would be more versitile the 70-200 f2.8 is nowhere near as sharp.

This lens just works right. Use it at any aperture and you won't be disappointed. It's relatively light weight; much lighter than the 70-200/2.8 zooms. The 200 2.8LII is a bargain.

I really like this lens. It is very fast and I really enjoy the degree that I can blur the background on people shots. It is a great addition to the kit zoom lens that accompanies most DSLRs. It is a bit heavy to carry around all day but I have done just that on many occasions.

I have also purchased a 50mm F1.4. I shoot with this lens and the 50mm. I never seem to find a use for my kit lens.

I'm hoping to purchase a 2x converter for the 200mm for added power when required.

This lense has very sharp glass. I use this lense in wedding photography and it does a wonderful job. It is very fast and gets in close without being intrusive.
