I had 18-200 IS lens that came with my Canon 60D, but sold this lens to get 24-105L IS lens. It's a great general purpose lens. I use this lens to take pictures of my five and four years old sons at their soccer practice, school activities, and music recitals. I also used this lens for landscape photography as well as architecture. But this great lens also have its weakness on a very low light scene. I wish that Canon will have a f/2.8 version of this lens. To complete my set, I ordered a Canon 50mm f/1.4 (for very low light scenes) and will order a Tokina UWA 11-16mm f/2.8 soon.

I had this lens for over a month and taken hundreds of pictures. This lens is amazing in every way. Pros: I am not going into too much detail about how my shots turn out. The qualities of my base shots are excellent. I use Lightroom to enhance my shots before developing. I shoot everything in RAW, so if there are color or lighting issues I just correct them. When positioned correctly, this lens functions great and fast. However, if you are too close with a maxed zoom or too far there will be issues. Somewhat cons: First I do not believe there are any true cons about this lens. I researched some of the cons people post and I have logical responses. Price is high at [$]. But for an L-series you are getting what you pay for. In addition, [$] is not bad for what you are getting in this L-series lineup. You could pay [$] and purchase several lower or mid range lenses. Or use that [$] to invest in a good quality lens. This weight is heavy, but for the construction that is a given. Actually, I like the weigh as my camera is very light that shifts in the bag when stored. This lens gives it some needed weigh for stability. There were some complaints about the focusing. I found zooming in closely to subjects; focusing could be slower or just uncooperative. However, this is not a macro lens, which I really tried pushing it to that point.

I believe this is just a bad lens that got past quality control. The focus just wasn't there even when shot from a tripod using a remote control to fire the camera, at any focal length. This is my first L lens and it is a huge jump over my 17-85mm IS USM on my Canon 7D. I was surprised at the difference between the two lenses. The lens suffers from a bit of zoom-creep--that would be my only large complaint. Photos are extremely sharp and the contrast and color are far better than with my old 17-85mm. Since the 7D is a crop camera, this lens is not very wide at 24mm but the advantages of the lens more than make up for the loss of wide angle from my 17-85mm.

If you can only travel with one lens this is a great one to go with. Full range from wide to telephoto. A wider aperture would be great but with the high iso abilities of basically every dslr that comes out now, it's not really an issue for low light.

Used on an APS-C sensor the range is very effective for everyday use. You lose range on the wide angle end but you really gain on the telephoto range. I find I don't shoot alot of wide angle shots so this lens really works for me.

As I shot landscape picture after landscape picture (with a different non-stabilized lens) that were nice, but lacked sharpness, I began to research this Canon L series lens for months wondering if I could justify the price. I should have bought it two vacations ago! I love the heft and weighty feel. I use it with my Canon 40D and am producing tack sharp images with unbelieveable color. My wife could see the difference immediately. The colors are breathtaking.

The image stabilizer seems to help, but there's something about the glass that has propeled my photography to the next level. I have not had any problem with lens creep, and the lens is not unusually heavy... just a nice weighty feel. This no nonsense, high end lens is everything that's been advertised.

This was a great upgrade to my Tamron 2.8 28-70 lens for the weddings I shoot. The L glass really makes a difference. The only con is that it was hard to focus on moving subjects in low light, but that'd be hard with most lenses.

As a cross platform (Nikon and Canon) shooter, I am very pleased with this lens - even in comparison to Nikon glass of the same range.

The L designation does not disappoint, I assure you. Its color rendition and resolving power is top notch and makes for a sweet walk-around lens for every day shooting.

I give it 4 of 5 stars though, for a few reasons: #1, it is a bit inconsistent in its focusing. Other Canon-only shooters I've asked have dismissed it as a quirk of Canon cameras, but whatever. I think the lens itself is sometimes so quick to focus that it passes or misses the focus. Shooting at smaller apertures like f/8 this isn't an issue, but wide open it is a bit more inconsistent than I would like.

#2, its a bit dark. Yes, it has VR, but I would honestly often rather have no VR and fast glass than a dark max aperture. It can only absorb so much light and for fast-moving subject, I have to go with some other lens. But that's the bane of all lenses that sacrifice VR-capabilities with fast glass.

#3, as a rather "basic" kit lens with the original 5D, it is a bit on the pricey side.

A great benefit to its VR capability, though, is how good it actually performs. Its a nice, smooth "floating" VR and, honestly, I bet I've gotten an easy 3 stops darker on multiple occasions - even as low as 1/4sec shots.

The 24-105/4L is a solid lens, a solid performer, and a great lens for a wide range of situations.

I first thought about going for a more upgraded body but then my brother suggested for a better glass. And I'm glad I did. This is my first foray into the Prosumer grade lenses. i was using a tamron 18-200 with my 350D before i got this lens and the image quality is unbelievable. the USM focusing motor is almost silent and instant, and has a constant aperture of f4 so is a reasonably fast lens,giving great results wide open. its built to last in all weathers and although is quite a heavy lens for its size, doesnt seem to unbalance my 40D. well worth every penny!

I bought the 24-105mm L-series lens because it can be used on both crop frame and full frame Canon digital SLRs. I've been testing the lens with a new, Canon Xsi and comparing jpegs made with the lens to scanned negatives and transparencies from my Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. Initial impressions are that the images are very close in quality when photographing the same subject under the same light conditions. The Canon's Lens focusing is fast, smooth and quiet. It seems quite sharp through all focal lengths. Color saturation and mid range tone separation are excellent.

Although I don't currently make my living in photography, I've been a photographer for nearly 38 years, have worked as a photojournalist and have taught print making at a major university in the past. I've owned lots of cameras and lenses. This 24-105L is definitely the sharpest zoom I've ever owned, if not the sharpest lens, period. It's been a pleasure to use, and so far I haven't found anything I dislike about it.

When used with a camera like the Xsi, the 24-105 mm lens has the distinct advantage of light weight, while still offering very high resolution and detail. The older I get, the nicer it is to have light equipment. This camera and lens will probably become my principle back country shooting system for hikes, backpacking and ski tours.

Waited a long time to buy this lens. It is well made and the image stabilization works well. I can hand hold down to 30th of a second and still produce sharp images. Shots wide open at f4 is a little soft which is disappointing considering that this is an L lens. My old Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Af does a better job at that aperture. My Canon 70-200mm f4 also performs beautifully at f4. For the price I expected much better results. At f5.6 the image sharpens up considerably. So if you are after sharpness, perhaps look at the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 or go for a prime. If you are after a lens with versatility and have trouble holding your camera still, then this is a good lens, if you can forgive the lack of sharpness at widest aperture. I really wanted to love this lens but can't quite forgive it's lack of sharpness. Let's hope Canon can continue to improve this lens in the future or at least drop the price.

I can rely on this lens to always give me sharp images. And, with the great range of focal lengths, 24-105, I seldom need to use a different lens. Don't be put-off by the fact that the aperture only goes down to 4.0. With the Image Stabilization and great optics, it's easy to get very sharp images indoors with modest lighting even at 1/8 sec. I love using this lens.

Nice when paired with the canon 5d for actual 24m. Optics not as spectacular as the 70-200 2.8 is but still very impressive for a zoom. Some minor distortion and blur on the edges at 24m when using a full frame sensor but still a very solid performer… highly recommended.

This is a gorgeous general purpose lens that gives sharp, crisp images. I especially love the way it shoots headshots and 3/4's. The best lens I've found for people, but also shoots closeup details and gorgeous outdoor landscapes really well. Love the range of this lens. I have occasionally shot entire weddings using only this lens. The one issue I've come across with this lens is that it sometimes gives an "error" message for no apparent reason in the middle of shooting which is accompanied by a sudden lack of AF capability. If I turn off the camera, then detach & reattach the lens, this clears every time. I've never had that issue with another lens. In the grand scheme, had I known about this issue in advance, I would still buy this product because of its range and the gorgeous images it produces coupled with my 30D/580EX/GF Cloud Lightsphere.

This was my first L series lens and what a great introduction to a terrific line of lenses. Canon really hit a home run with this one. Sharp IQ, incredibly fast focus - even in low light, lightweight, and it has IS to boot! As mentioned by others, IS won't help in low-light when your subject is moving, but man, is it nice for stationary subjects, including people. Terrific for portraits. I use it a lot for car shows and just to have at the ready. Plus, it retains essentially all of it's value for many years.

This is my all-purpose walkaround lens that I use 80% of the time. The lens takes very sharp pictures and focuses quickly. The IS feature is really nice when taking pictures of stills, but obviously doesn't help much when taking pictures of moving objects at slow shutter speeds. I like the zoom range from 24 to 105. I wish that the lens was f/2.8 at times, but it's not that big of a deal. If I need the faster shutter speeds I just bump up the ISO. I prefer the DOF one gets at f/4 as compared to f/2.8. I have a 24-70 f/2.8L that I hardly ever use anymore. The 24-105 is more versatile and takes awesome pictures. I only miss the f/2.8 every once in a while.

What a great lens. After doing a lot of research, and narrowing it down between this lens and the 28-70 f2.8, I decided to go with this one given the IS will buy me a little steadiness in low light.

I'm glad I did. The DOF at f4 is pretty shallow, but the sharpness of the focus deserves an A+

I have been extremely pleased with this lens. It allows me to take pictures I didn't dream I could get. The image stabilzation is lightning fast and quiet. I can't tell it is doing anything, unless I turn it off and take the picture again only to see the horrid results from my shakey hands! It just works well, and even if you are in a rush and just stab the button you'll still get a good shot because this lens, the AF (when paired my XTi) and IS are so darn fast. [...]

I use this lens with my Canon 5D for portraits and weddings and I am thrilled with it. The IS feature lets me hand-hold it in quite dim light. Coupled with Canon's fine noise control, it is a great combination.

This is one of the most used lenses in my backpack. Most of the photography I do is off the beaten path, usually an 8-12 mile day hike through Colorados's wilderness areas. Always wanting just a bit more length than the 24-70 offered, I also carried the 70-200 with me all the time. The 24-105 has just the right amount of focal length for the vast majority of landscapes available. It is still a hefty lens, just like the 24-70, but it is the only one in the daypack and 20 by 30 inch prints aren't a problem with a good slide film. The quality of the 24-105 is just as good or better than the 24-70, and I wish Canon would of come out with this one sooner than they did.

took this lens to Hawaii and was the lens I used the most. It is a bit heavy for an F4 but well made and I had no problems with it since I bought it a year ago. I use lee filters and I love the internal focusing.

First "high dollar" lens I purchased. Have shot around 3-4k photo's with it in about 3 months. Out of my now expansive lens collection still my favorite, shoots everything beautifully, from macros to telephoto motion shots. This is the clearest and most versatile lens. if your thinking of buying an awesome lens that you can use for virtually any situation, buy this lens, you will not be disappointed. 5 stars doesn't do it justice, i'de score it 100/100, not one complaint.
