The 24-70 shows luscious color, amazing micro-contrast and produces buttery bokeh wide open. It's a great macro lens too. If it weren't for the wildlife and higher-magnification macro work I do, it would never come off my camera.

My mind's eye has adapted to this lens' range. Its ability to go from wide to mild telephoto is very handy on both crop and full frame, and doesn't vignette on FF either. I used micro-focusing adjustments on both my bodies and it's very close to prime-sharp.

If you're wanting or wondering about an L lens, wondering where to start, this is the one guaranteed not to disappoint.

I've only had this lens for about a month but it is GREAT for portraiture and I'm sure I'll like it for other events, too. Being winter/early spring I haven't gotten outside with this lens, yet...but in studio it is great! Much better and faster then my 28-135, which I still love and it was a great first lens, but now that I'm doing more and more, I wanted and needed a better lens.

My copy is sharp at f2.8 and sharper when stopped down. I'm spoiled by prime lenses so at first I didn't think it was very sharp but over all it's pretty sharp for zoom lens. Some inconsistent focus in a low light situation but it happens to most of lenses even L lenses. My concern was that it doesn't focus perfectly on 24mm. Not noticeable unless close look but you can tell by zoom in to 70mm then you notice it's not focus correctly. Some of focus capability may be also caused by camera's focus system so I can't tell it's all this lens' fault. But I felt it might be pushing limit for 21meg pixel sensor as far as sharpness.

It is most effective with a full-frame sensor cameras even though still great with an 1.6x cropped sensor. Especially I love to play with DOF using f2.8 with my 5DMkII. It produces great images with nice color and bokeh. Zoom ring is tight (for now) and well built. It's heavy but not unbearable. It's definitely not walk around lens or I should say it's more than just a walk around lens. It gives you a lot more creativity in your photography. If you want a sharper lens, I recommend to buy primes. If you want just a walk around lens, get something like EF28-135mm IS. It's light weight and cheaper and it's got IS.

I understand there may have some quality glitches. But considering collecting all the prime lenses of this zoom range, this lens can offer zoom coverages from 24 to 70mm, consistent f2.8 with L built quality and IQ. I think it still justify its price.

I rented this lens from a friend and fit it on a 5 dmk 2 and boy did this lens deliver. Took a bunch of low light pics with it for a theater production and the images came out consistently sharp, im buying one this week.

This lens stays on my 5D Mark II 98% of the time. That's about the highest compliment you can give a lens, I think.

Have captured low light images, at night, hand held at 50mm using a shutter speed of 1/13th of a second, with no motion blur and surprising sharpness. It definitely doesn't need IS.

This is a workhorse lens that lets me adapt to almost any situation instantly, and not just get the shot, but get usable shots that consistently impress. I think if you consider that it's a lifetime investment (because you never need to buy another), the price is actually rather paltry.

Excellent for artwork, studio work, landscapes/seascapes, aerial photography, portraits, pets, children, weddings, infrared work, and on and on. I don't see how they could improve on this lens, really, aside from making it equal my 70-200 f/2.8 L II in sharpness - but since it takes pixel peeping to even see any difference at all, I doubt that's going to be a major concern for them.

Tried twice to add images, but lost the review I wrote both times, so you'll just have to suffer. ;)

If there's any question in your mind, the answer is, yes, get this lens. Even if you think you want the 28-105/f4L.

I wanted an all around lens that was fast and I could depend on. I have a Tameron 28-105 f2.8 this lens replaces. The Tameron served me well, but I do random events and sometimes the lens did not focus fast enough, that is not a problem with the Canon 24-70mm Canon. The only thing sharper are my handful of Canon Primes.

I got this because I wanted better low-light performance than my 24-105 f4 could produce and it gets 5 stars because it really is a superb optic. However mine was so bad out of the box I immediately sent it back to Canon. They realigned two elements and returned it within six days (their warranty service gets 5 stars too)and it's overall performance is impressive. I can't add any real new information to the many previous reviews but I do highly recommend it. I also suggest that you test it as soon as you get it and contact Canon if there's anything wrong. If it's to spec, it will deliver the best shots you'll ever see.

This lens was a great buy. It is very sharp, focusing is extremely fast and spot on. I tried switching between manual to auto to see if it finds any soft focus, but there was none between the two modes. Lugging this lens on the neck for several hours is the only down side of it. It is HEAVY! But other than that, its a really great lens.

This lens is awesome! Razor shard and spot on. My only complaint is that it doesn't have Image Stabilization, but the rumor is that Canon has one with IS in the works. Regardless, this lens is great. I have it paired with a 7D and have been very pleased with the results so far. The weight took some getting used to, but it doesn't get much better than this for a nice portrait or events lens.

This is probably the best zoom in its class. It's heavy and expensive. But it is worth every penny. The image quality and sharpness for a zoom are very good and this lens can rival some of the primes. AF is very quick and responsive. The minimum aperture of this lens will appeal to those who work in lower light conditions, such as event and wedding photography.

This lens is solid, vivid and great for weddings.

I think its funny how people say this lens is heavy. NOT at all, grab a 70-200 2.8 for a comparison! This lens feels SOLID, built to L standards. I also find it funny how people call "NO I.S." a con. You simply DO NOT NEED I.S. for this focal length, ask a pro, they will set you straight! All in all this lens is everything and more. I really looked forward to the purchase of this lens as it was my first L lens for my Canon 50D. As the title says, it was everything I hoped it would be. A very significant upgrade from the kit lenses.

The sharpness of the lens and the beautiful bokeh are outstanding.

I calibrated the autofocus when I first received it. It was spot on between 35mm and 70 mm. And a bit back-focused as it approached 24 mm. I made no adjustments as the back focus was not material at the distances I used it at.

You will love this lens.

Playing around with this lens has been fun. I haven't done serious shooting with it yet, but just taking snapshots and playing with depth of field has been easy. The last lens I had capable of f/2.8 was an old fully manual Pentax 70-200, so this has proven fun to experiment with. I'm still using a 4 year old Rebel XT (with 30k exposures) for now, so any limitations I've run in to I'm attributing to the camera.

After shooting many Catholic weddings with the no flash rule, I had to get a faster lens. I own the 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM and this lens was the perfect addition.

It has a fast, sharp and quite focus that is great during mass and kept from being distracting. The speed was also a plus in allowing me to capture the best low-light exposures.

The one thing that had me perplexed was the zoom and lens hood relationship. After I opened it and pulled out the hood, I thought it was rather big until I figured out that the zoom moves within the hood. A very interesting design.

I got this lens to fit on the full frame 5DMII and needed a fast lens for sports photography. The pictures are gorgeous. I have an old EF lens that I have used to compare the two lenses, and the difference in quality is phenomenal. Great colors, quick focus, and extremely well built. It is a bit heavy, but I don't mind that at all. A good lens with good glass is going to weigh more.

This 2.8L lens excels at taking photos at low light without a flash. My family was amazed at my ability to take clear photos at Christmastime without the use of a flash. Also excels at nighttime photography.

Of course, during the day, this lens is a beast, handling the full-frame 5D Mark II effortlessly.

This is a great if not perfect all around lens to keep attached to the camera all the time.

I recommend this lens for a full frame sensor, though I have had favorable results on crop sensors as well.

Being a 2.8 lens it is fast, and can offer great bokeh when shot fully open.

It is a great up close and personal lens for event, wedding, portrait, and general photos.

While I personally prefer a longer focal length for fashion, this lens will let you get the job done when space does not allow usage of a longer telephoto lens ie the 70-200...

Other than the 70-200 I believe this is my 2nd favorite lens for portraits and fashion photos.

Definitely a MUST BUY and MUST HAVE in the bag.

So far I've used it for a wedding and a couple of portrait sessions and I'm very happy with it. It's heavy, but even after a 12 hour wedding I didn't have a problem with it. Very sturdy, not super sharp when wide open, but all in all I love the sharpness, clarity, and color that it provides.

Useful focal length. But wide open it's super soft. At wide angles the edges get pretty furry. Chromatic aberration all over the place. I'll rent it if I absolutely need this range of focal lengths, but I'm waiting for Canon to release an upgrade. (Hopefully some time in 2010?) Seriously, this lens is a dog, and I've used enough of them to know I didn't get a bad model; It's just not well engineered. Compare to the equivalent Nikon and you see how horrible the glass is on the Canon. Wait for the upgrade and rent in the mean time.

This is my most versatile lens, you can't go wrong. I use it during my portrait sessions - beautiful, vivid colors. It is never as sharp as a prime lens (to be expected), but sometimes we don't always have the luxury of being able to move around. I would highly recommend it.

I purchased this lens to fill the gap between my 16-35 and my 70-200. It is a fantastic lens that I recently took to the Tetons to shoot and was not disappointed with the results. The only downside that I encountered was some vignetting with my polarizing filter at 70 mm. The other minor downside was the lens extension when at the 70 mm end that makes the lens quite long. Otherwise the lens was what you would expect for a top end Canon lens.

I shoot events every week and had been using a Sigma 28-200 with OS for most of the general shots but upgraded to this one because it is a 2.8 and an L series. I must say that I miss the OS for some of the work but make up for it with my 70-200 L lens by Canon with OS for these shots. I use this one for all the inside building, low light work and have been pleased with the colors and clarity of the shots. I was not happy that the 2x Extender that I use on the 70-200 wouldn't work on this but outside of that, I like the lens and keep it on my Canon 5D most of the time. John'e

Excellent Lens!The 24-70 I mostly use it for real estate photography on a 5D. I also use it for aerial pictures although it is a bit heavy for it.For interior shots it is not the best, I use my 17-40.Image quality is also good. Awesome lense for aerial photography. The right mix of zoom range and clarity. Started with a 70-200mm that got too much blur in the action. This lense is fast and best compromise for range. Barrel extends for zoom is only thing I don't like/prefer.

Haven't been able to get a single sharp image from this lens. From Canon at this price, I am very disappointed. Canon better tune-up its QC department very swiftly. I shot a single stable subject while my 5D MKII was on a heavy Bogen tripod, mirror locked up, switch fired; I shot every aperture, distance I could, Manual at f11, Full Auto, Av at f11, ISO's from 100 (on Full Auto) to 800, manual and autofocus and when I manually focused I used a Canon magnifier on the viewfinder then locked mirror up. Can't focus more sharply than that. I did not get a single sharp image doing all of this.[...] Been buying from them for many years and will continue to. I know that exquisite Canon 24-70mm L's do exist.

Being that I own the Canon Rebel XSi, I have an APS-C type body with the ISO capability to 1600, IS would be a very nice feature for this lens.

Besides that I dont have something like a 5D Mark II body, this is a magnificent lens. The f/2.8 does prove for faster picture taking compaired to something like the 18-55mm kit lens.

This is my first L type glass lens, and its wonderful. The glass is just like butterrrrr. If you have a smudge on the glass, you just wipe away, not having to worry about scratching it or anything. I highly recommend L glass.

The downside to this lens, besides no image stabilization, is probably the weight. I got the box in the mail and thought maybe a small mammal crawled in the box and died on the way here. That wasnt the case; it was the lens. Its really not that bad, but its a beast of a lens.

So if you're a hobbyist/enthusiast/professional, I highly recommend this lens.

I but this lens for my Canon 5D Mark2. When it arrived I ran the focus test on the lens which showed front focusing at 70mm zoom setting but it was perfect at 24mm (micro focus adjustment not useful here because lens was not front focusing at 24mm) not happy with the result called Canon and they told me that NEW LENS needs to be recalibrated!!
From what I read on reviews on this site and other sites I was not very surprised but was hoping that I get lucky and get a good copy, not so!
I debated with myself to keep the lens and send to Canon for recaliration or send it back to Adoram and ask for another copy. I decided to keep the lens and send it to Canon for service. (next time I'll send it back and ask for another copy)
After one week of nervously waiting finally lens came back with a note from Canon service explaining that some part was loose inside the lens causing front focusing, of course they did recalirate the lens and seems to be working fine now but also they added some dust particles and a bit of haze inside the front element.
In my opinion if Canon continues this way they are going to loose the battle against Nikon!
I'd like to mention that I used Nikon D700 with their 24-70 lens which performed right on the money and also performed dead on with my much older Nikon lens 28-70
As far as recommending this lens to a friend I have mix feelings! If you get a good copy, this lens is great.

I can't say I wasn't warned. There are a lot of posts about bad copies of this lens. My first one I received was indeed a non-sharp lens. I sent it back and am currently waiting for my replacement.

Excellent Lens! This is my second Canon L lens. I'd read all the negative reviews about this lens and almost didn't buy it because of them. But then I talked with professional photographers who use this lens. They said buy it you won't regret it! I bought it and LOVE IT! This brick of a lens is fast, sharp and takes beautiful pictures. I don't mind the weight. It hasn't come off my camera since I got it! Well there you go, that's my two cents worth, hope it helps.

Great lense and after I ordered I found out that a rebate was available. However, Adorama raised their price the amount of the rebate so they wouldn't have to give it to me for the purchase. I know this because I shopped the lense for the past 3 months with Adorama,[...]. Seems they all did the same by raising the price to include the rebate over the regular advertised price. I don't plan to purchase anything else from Adorama in the future.

I heard a lot about this lens before purchasing, such as issues with weight, sharpness, and not being IS. However, after spending two weeks with it, the first of which I used it daily and shot a number of photos, I have to say I am very impressed.

Yes, it is heavier than other lenses, however, not that much so. I walked around for two days straight with this lens and really didn't notice the weight. Hand holding it wasn't a problem and it didn't bug me when it was hanging around my neck off the side.

It is tack sharp, quick to focus, and produces excellent images. I would not recommend it for a crop-sensor body as the focal lengths aren't what I'm looking for, but it fits perfectly on a full frame camera.

Probably the perfect lens for full frame cameras. Not so useful for cropped cameras as it converts to a 39-112mm. There's noticeable barrel distortion at 24mm and vignetting is pretty bad wide open. But the copy I have is tack sharp...almost too sharp for portraits. F2.8 is great for low light shooting as well. Built like a tank, so you'll probably want to get a battery grip to help balance out the lens.

This is a terrific lens, very fast focus and sharp edge to edge. Lens hood casts shadow when used on the EOS 50D with built in flash. No shadow when used with hot shoe flash such as Canon 580 EX II. Lens cap difficult to remove if lens hood is in place, suggest removing hood to remove or replace lens cap. Lens is very heavy and intimidating for casual photography.

I have never owned this range of lens before but purchased it because of the specs, price and rebate. Wow, am I glad that I made the purchase. I find myself turning to it time and time again. After reading all the reviews about bad copies of this lens I purchased both this 24-70 lens and a 24-105 IS lens just in case. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because this is a good sharp lens.

I use it along with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS on a second camera for weddings and portraits. I also have other lenses, but basically these 2 lenses stay on the cameras almost all the time.

I upgraded from a 30D with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS to a 5D MkII and this lens. I like this better than the 17-55 but I miss the image stabilization. The 24-70 focuses quickly, predictably and is as sharp as any other zoom lens I've used. My copy does exactly what I expected and is probably even sharper than I thought it would be.

How does this lens compare to the two similar lenses I use? I love my 17-55 f/2.8 IS and I'm not happy with the 24-105 f/4 IS. And the irony, considering all the reports of focus issues with the 24-70, is that my 24-105 has focus problems and my 24-70 is excellent!

I've been using this lens for about 2 months now and it's been great. Very sharp images, solid construction, and a good all-around lens to leave on your camera. The only down side as an all-around is its weight; I'm willing to overlook that for this lens but it is noticeable when you've been shooting all day.

note - when i added the pics to this review the quality doesn't look that great but it looks good on my pc/prints. might be compressed or i'm doing somrthing wrong here...

A friend who is a wedding photog. recommended I try it. The ability to blur distracting backgrounds at the 2.8 f-stop as well as the lower light performance affording a higher shutter speed gives a lot of latitude for shooting on the move subjects in less than ideal conditions.
Really sharp shots (but watch the shallow depth of field at f2.8).
Yes it is heavy and does cause a nose heavy balance to the camera, but a battery grip - although adding more weight - does help to counter by creating a deeper camera body.

I am on my third lens all puchased from repudable retailers . Every lens has been OOF and focus and/or zoom rings are "TIGHT" @ one end (loosens at the other end). I have micro-calibrated each of these lens on my 1Ds with only fair results. It seems that the lens misses the target. Canon says that these lens have been jarred in transport . I thought these "L" lens were durable. I have five L lens , two are zooms , all were purchased new and I am very impressed with the line-up Canon has but this one has missed the mark . I do not consider this lens worthy of the red ring!

Working on the third copy [...] CANON has poor Quality Control on this lens. Had issues with back focus, soft focus across the entire range. OK for portrait but for the $$$$.$$ you expect much more. Best of luck!!

Every wedding photographer has this lens (at least if you are into Canon). It is ultra fast at focussing and extremely adaptable to most situations. The lens I used previously had issues with AF under low light; this lens, however, focusses even in the darkest of dark places.

Best lens to have in your bag. Although expensive, this lens is super sharp, fast focusing and captures exploding details. You can place this glass on Canon's D60 to a D1s Mark3 and it will not disappoint you. The lens is not heavy to me, but feels rather solid. The range is perfect, even on 1.6 crop to a FF camera.

This is an awesome lens and the feedback I got before I purchased it was true to form; you might not ever take it off the camera.

I was surprised that this lens was so solid. It doesn't have image stabilization but the 2.8 makes up for that a bit. The pictures are very sharp and the colors pop. It's not a cheap lens but it's well worth the cost and I would recommend it to all serious photographers.

I shoot almost everything and since I put this lens on, it has hardly came off. Lens is sharpest in the mid aperture range, however still great all over. I am also impressed with the contruction of the lens hood as well it lets me use the hoya pro cp filter with the hood on as well. If you are looking for the perfect lens, this is it. The only thing that could improve it would possibly be an update with an IS feature.

This is my first lens, and purchased it because of it's exceptional quality, build, and usability from full wide to full zoom at any f/stop without much compromise. When used on a sub-frame camera, the 28mm isn't wide enough for me, so I will supplement with wide angle, and a telephoto on the other end.The only problem I've experienced is a slight grinding/friction noise when turning the zoom ring at the wide angle range. I've searched online and have come across other users who have experienced the same thing, and others who comment the zoom range is silky smooth. When the camera is vertical, the lens is smooth. When the camera is held upside down, also smooth. Only rough when used in the normal position.Because this is a L-series lens, and touted as one of the best, I feel I can expect more[...]

I bought this lens at adorama. A few days after the 30-day return expired, I noticed whenever I shoot at 24mm to 50mm, half-black-circle appears on the middle of my pictures. The closer I got to the object, the bigger the circle. Sent to Canon for repair. A few days later Canon returned to me saying "Repair to good working order". I was excited because my shooting trip was planned for the next date. The problem was still around. Canon technician didn't even take the time to do a simple test let alone fixed this lens.

This experience definitively makes me move to Nikkon.

This lens is a great "walk-around" lens. It is fast enough to be hand held in most situations and with a full-frame sensor it is wide enough for most needs. It is a big piece of glass and therefore, it does have some weight, but the weight is nicely counterbalanced by the 5D. I would rather have the extra weight than give up speed and contrast. If you are only going to have one lens, this is the one.

I used the 28-70 f/2.8L for about a year. My brother in law took it back then I started to miss it.
I finally pulled the trigger and got the 24-70.
The extra 4MM is great. You must hold this heavy lens steady for good results. A little soft wide open but still good. I use it with my Canon 20D until I'll get a FF camera.

Fantastic lens suitable for most shots for those who like to get in close to the action. Provides an excellent range, wide to medium, without any lens aberrations or silouetting.

Solid contruction and delivers unbelievably sharp, crisp images.

I also recommend Tiffen's wide angle filters to accommodate this lens' 24mm range, especially for cameras with a full-frame sensor.

I had second thoughts about spending this much money but a knowledgeable friend talked me into it. He was right. F2.8 and the focal length gives you so many options. It's kind of heavy but well balanced. We did a lot of walking throughout Yellowstone and it's weight was never a burdon. It does get noticed by fellow photographers.

As other reviews here have stated, this is a heavy lens, yet it seems a solid design.

Once you start shooting with it you won't notice the weight because your mind is on framing the shot and getting the right lighting (at least in my case this was true).

Its auto focus is fast, and quiet. Images very crisp and clear. The depth of field is also outstanding and very little lens flaring (if shooting back lit subjects). The f2.8 makes it a wonderful lens for indoor as well as outdoor.

My over all view is this is a great lens to add to your camera bag. :)

Unfortunately, for what I need, this is the only high quaility glass Canon makes (something wide with an ample zoom). The problem is that this lens is too long (ironically it is at it's longest at 24mm) and shooting at night (as I do) without filters (fire effects, etc.) I feel inclined to keep the hood on to protect the lens. Although the quality of the glass is unparalleled, I find it extremely annoying.

I shoot people, interiors, ads and editorial assignments. The lens is very sharp, amazing results even wide open. Fast AF. Just enough on the wide end.

Before I got this lens, I had used a Minolta for several years, and found myself using only the 28mm wide angle and the 70-210 tele zoom. The Canon 28 -70 gives me that midrange I had missed. I wouldn't mind having a 28 - 200 or more, but so far have found nothing of comparable optical performance, and I really dont like fuzzy pictures.

This lens has surpassed my expectations! Yes, it is somewhat heavy and large, but when the images it produces appear on my computer screen, I have no regrets!

Survived a fall but developed a pinch of black mite inside somewhere which had to be removed & the lens recalibrated. Works a treat now, though. I had to get used to the weight but it's such a terrific lens I forgive it. Others always comment on its impressive size & weight but show no interest in trying it out themselves.

This is the best midrange lens I have used. The picture quality is amazing and the speed is even better with the f2.8. A must have for basketball and traveling pictures. The only problem is the price but when your shooting with it, you forget all about it.

Canon did it again! A fast, virtually distortion free wide angle lens that stands up to the rigors in a jungle tour or in Antarctica, yet it is at home in the studio as well.

I use this lens on a 20D for close-in action, crowd and individual shots. Ease of use and clarity are excellent. If you can afford it I would always recommend the f/2.8.

Great quality lens, terrific contrast & sharpness even to the edges of the image. f/2.8 means it can be used in most places.

Only slight downside is it is a heavy beast & you can't be exactly unobtrusive using it.

The low f-stop makes incredible indoor shots at weddings without even having to use a flash! The construction of the item is amazing also, as I have had mine since January, it has yet to show ANY wear on it at all and I take it through alot!
