I made a side-by-side comparison with the Canon 24-105L, which is over three times the price, and found this lens performed virtually as well on a variety of subjects. On a Canon 5d full-frame DSLR its edge sharpness was slightly inferior, but center frame was equivalent, even wide open. Contrast was excellent. The 24-85 is also much lighter and more compact than the 24-105L. I thought the 24-105L would be a step up for me, but wound up sticking with the 24-85 which I've been using for several years.

This is a great middle of the road lens that I got for outdoor usage when I don't need really wide angle and my 17-50 is just too short.

The image quality wide open was better than I expected, but still not fantastic, though once you get to F5.6, IQ is excellent, though still not quite as sharp as the Tamron 17-50 F2.8.

I would not buy this lens for indoors, as it is too slow and too tele, but for a medium outdoor zoom, it's hard to beat for the price.

Great all-round lens on my Canon 10D, very fast & quite auto-focussing. Its light weight and very good optical quality makes it a carry anywhere lens, seriously understimated I suspect, if using non-full-frame. Very good Pics with this lens.

I have used the lense now for over three years and it is a work horse that loves to travel through all kinds of conditions and keeps offering a clear image of all the views I expose it to. Climbing mountains, I have bumped the lense and camera, yet never missed a shot and have a breath taking collection from sunrise to sunset of the locations where I have travelled
