The EF 28-105mm is a good lens for the money. It has a useful focal range and I am not worried about throwing it in a bag or a pocket. For the price, the construction is also solid. The USM focuses quickly and accurately.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AutoFocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA Warranty:

I purchase this lens as an inexpensive option to use in my pro body, for security reasons. Results are good but not impressive. Quality is ok for normal use but not recomended for pro use. I think results would get better in a consumer body as the high image quality of a good sensor brings out the optic defects. It's very good to have internal focus as I use circular polarizers and the length does not change. Ultrasonic is fast and precise, but maximum apperture limits its use in low light. Front element seems to be a little bit loose but works fine. I recommend this lens

Comments about Canon Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AutoFocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA Warranty:

This is the first lens I bought for my SLR after using the 18mm kit lens. I love the lens. It takes great close up shots and beautiful portraits of people. The focus is amazing. Fast and quiet. Adorama offered at over a 100 dollars less than the local Ritz camera store. I use it wtih a hood and can't wait to see the results using a polarizer. It does search in low light conditions. I usually use the 18mm for night long exposure type shots, but other than that this lens is a permanent fixture on my camera. shots are sharp and colors are solid. great lens for the money.

I just received this 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 today...I love the lens...it is very useful in almost any situation...If you are deciding between this and the 4.0-5.6 go with this one (build quality is better, focusing ring is nice, focus window is helpful, full time manual, and the list keeps going on) I can't wait to try it out more...

While soft wide open it does sharpen up nicely around F8. Typical consumer grade construction. Fast and accurate focus. Very good for the price.

great lens with lots of range. Good lens for a starter who can experement with different focal lengths and then upgrade from there if they desire. We use this lens with our 75-300 cannon to get flexibility in our shots. We mostly shoot our children and scenery.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AutoFocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA Warranty:

It is a great lens in its price range. A big step ahead of the kit (FF) lens. Can be a bit soft wide open but gets very good at f/5.6 - f/8. Not as good as the 24-105 or the 17-55 but at f/8 you can hardly tell the difference. Those two lenses shine in low light though for $[...] and more.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AutoFocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA Warranty:

I wasn't expecting much when I bought this lens but it really surprised me. I compared this lens to my Canon 28-80 L, 100-300L and 70-200 f4 L at F8. I couldn't tell the difference between the L's and this lens at F8. My 70-200 F4 L was slightly sharper than this lens at f8 but over all it held up very well for not being an L. Now This lens doesn't do as well as an L wide open but It's also not the price of an L

A great value
By Peter from Indiana on 9/15/2006
Pros:
Very good overall
Cons:
Soft when wide open, Some geometric distortion
Best Uses:
Walk around

Comments about Canon Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AutoFocus Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA Warranty:

I have been using this lens for two years as my primary one on a film camera, then on the Digital Rebel XT. Great value for the money, better colors than the 50 mm prime (but not as sharp, of course), much better than the kit lens of the Rebel. Soft when wide open, and shows noticeable geometric distortions at both ends. I compared it recently to the $1,250 24-105 L Canon zoom - well, the L lens is better, of course, and the IS is nice to have, but when you stop them at f/8, the results are comparable on my screen. Still, the L glass is worth it, if you can afford it.
