The Canon Extender adds a whopping 2X multiplication to my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens so I can really reach far. What I was not aware of, the lens becomes a manual focus lens when the extender is added. I was aware of the loss of 2 f-stops and the limited applicability. The Extender can only be added to a few lenses so be aware this extender does Not work with all lenses. Even with these stated drawbacks, it sure beats spending $10,000+ on an 800mm lens. I shot some awesome shots out here in Hawaii using the extender. I used it to shoot the big wave surfers of North Shore, whales breaching the south shores of Honolulu, and some close shots of the beautiful Hawaiian landscape. I am an amateur photographer so I feel this is the best affordable option for the average photographer.
I added a photo I shot using the extender (reduced size).

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I was disappointed in the image quality using the 2x tele extender even though the reviews I have read claim the new optics of version 2 significantly improved the adapter. With my 400 f/5.6 it is, of course, this lens rendered a manual focus lens. I find the image is definitely not sharp compared to the sharpness of the 400 mm f/5.6 lens without the extender. I found similar results with a Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens. For the cost I certainly expected better performance. I would have see more data from other users to be persuaded to keep the adapter or recommend it. Perhaps, the performance found is the best that one can expect. If that is the case then I certainly do not recommend 2x converters. .

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
The 2.0x tele-extender was a lousy product. I know others who like it. Every test shot I took with it (using top quality 500mm f4.0 and 70-200 F2.8 lenses) was slow to focus and the results were either out of focus or noisy images. I would never buy one again. I returned it and exchanged it for the Canon 1.4x which I rate 5 stars.
Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I reviewed a lot of doublers and this is a solid performer. The limitation on autofocus and compatibility with other lense manufacturers may be a problem as I use it more.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
This extender is made by Canon and it complements certain Canon lenses. it is important to check to see if it can be used on whatever lens you plan to extend. If it is compatible, it can double your range. However, it is important to note that the light that reaches your sensor is now diminished so your
F stop range will have decreased. But with these notations taken into account, you will surely be pleased by the performance of the extender.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
Use with the Canon 300 mm f/2.8 IS USM - cost effective way to achieve 600 mm at reasonable speed without the $8000+ cost - the 300 mm f/2.8 is a super sharp lens so there is little loss in image quality by adding the extender - auto focus slows down enough to notice but not enough to be a problem, I'm happy with my purchase.
Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I use this whenever my 70-200mm f2.8L II just isn't long enough. Autofocus does hunt a bit sometimes but given enough light it's never that big of an issue.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I used this with my 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens to photograph Eagles and Hawks in the Carson Valley, plus the Reno Air Show. The 2X extender gives me a light weight alternative to a big lens with excellent optical quality.
I am very happy with gaining 2X reach for the birds (feathered and jet powered). I used it with Canon 5D and 40D. (Note, the reviewer with limited Depth of Field complaint needs to learn that LESS depth of field is ALWAYS the case with LONGER focal length, not the fault of the 2X.)
A friend shooting indoors had trouble with the 2 stops loss, it is harder to focus in a low light condition. But outdoors I have no troubles.
I find the auto-focus and image stabilization work fine on the IS 70-200 f2.8 'L' lens. Auto-Focus (with AI-servo) follows the big birds in flight also.

I use the 2x extender with my 500mm f4 Canon and the 1Dmk IV to reach out and capture images of shy birds. Image quality is still great with this combo. It enables me to get usable pics that I would never get without it.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
If I only had one lens that I could shoot with it would be the Canon 70-200 L with OS lens. If I could add one component to the equation, it would have to be this one. When it says the Canon Extender EF 2x II will double the output with only one F stop loss, it means it. I have been able to shoot much further with this devise than I thought I would be able to.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I have used the 2x behind both my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM and 300mm f/2.8 IS USM for daytime high school football on both my 5DmkII and 20D. It gives the added reach for the 70-200 to make it useful in that scenario from the sidelines. On the 300mm, players less than 30 yards away are too close. Giving up two full stops (f/5.6 min) means at ISO 200 in Av at f/5.6, most of the frames snap off at 1/1250+ during the day. Great addition to the bag - a must-have.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I am very pleased with this teleconverter. It complements the Canon 1.4X teleconverter that I have. I am amazed that some buyers do not read the product literature. This piece of equipment is clearly indicated to only work for certain L telephoto lenses. When in doubt verify if your lenses are compatible with this equipment. Adorama staff will help you if necessary before you buy. It is unfair to rate the equipment mediocre just because a buyer was too dumb to check out the equipment. It is a great product.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I use the extender to increase my telephoto range for a 70 - 200 mm lense. My lense does not allow me to use the auto focus with the extender so I am slower with it than without. However, manual focus works well with the extender. I'll have to upgrade to a faster lense sometime from a f4 to a 2.8 so I can use auto focus.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
Only fits a few lenses. No where in the literature did this extender say it only fits a couple of lenses in the Canon arsenal. Bad marketing on Canon's part. Check carefully with Canon's web site prior to purchase to make sure you have a lens that will fit it. So this product is unrated as I was not able to use it.

Cheaper and lighter than having multiple lenses to cover the same focal length. Dosen't work with many lenses so be sure and check the applicable list before you purchase.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I use this extender with Canon 5d and 70mm-200mm L IS 2.8 and a tripod to get 400mm at f5.6. The extender barely degrades the sharpness of this otherwise terrific lens, and is great for getting details at up to thousands of yards.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I bought this Extender to use with my EF 100-400mmL and the EOS XSi camera. I knew going in that I would lose the ability to auto-focus and several f-stops. In bright sunlight it works OK as the minimum aperture becomes f/11. It is difficult to focus on small objects like birds, but I attribute that more to my aging eyesight than the camera/lens/extender combo. Knowing when the Extender can be used is key, but even with the limitations it gives a capability that is much cheaper than an 800mm lens.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I just got this product and took it for the weekend to some AMA motorcycle races. I used it with my 70-200 L-series lense and it worked great. I sat in the stands and was still able to get close pictures of the riders. It's really light which is nice because my lense is heavy enough. I compared it to purchasing a 400 L-series lense and am glad I bought the extender because it was a lot cheaper and my 70-200 is a better quality lense and I get the same distance now plus it's lighter.

It doesn'tfit all Eos lenses. It is mainly designed to work with the professional "L" lenses. I wanted to use it with my 75-300 telephoto. I will probally try the Kenko tele-converter next.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I use this extender sparingly on a Canon 40D with a EF 180mm USM Macro and a EF 70-200m f/2.8L IS USM. The electronic connections work correctly with both lens. The AUTOFOCUS has limitations with the 180mm USM Macro but they are described in the Canon EF Lens tables. Be prepared to focus manually unless you have plenty of light. When used on the 70-200 zoom all the functions, USM, IS and Aperture work flawlessly and it does save a few thousand dollars on the REAL 400mm THING! I cannot see any reduction in image quality although I rarely view my images at 100%. The only advice I can think of is that you will require a second pair of hands to attach/detach it whilst up to your armpits in aligators. So plan on attaching it in advance!
Overall I went and purchased the 1.4x extender for additional flexibility. A very safe buy.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
A nice piece of equipment to own to get those shots where you can't get physically closer. It can make the difference between a good shot and a great shot. The downsides are the additional weight and the increase light needed (adds 2 stops). Consider using a monopod or tripod.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
Doubling your focal length at low cost is a very appealing proposition. As most folks have pointed out here, the obvious tradeoff is giving up a couple of stops. But there is a much bigger tradeoff being made that is not mentioned… The converter takes great lenses with incredible optics, such as the 70-200 2.8 IS and turns them into just average or below average optic lenses... especially in lower light situations or with any significant subject motion or movement. Still, the focal length benefit you receive for what you pay cannot be argued with, especially considering the much more costly alternatives and, in some cases, no available alternatives at all for super long mm.

I bought this to use with my Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L zoom lens instead of buying the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L. It works great for what I want to use it for, but you loose f-stop/s.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I got this TC to photograph birds that the 500 f/4 could not reach properly even with the Canon 1.4 X TC being attached. I am pleased with the optical quality I get with the 2 X TC. This unit is only used for birds on a perch. When possible, I will prefocus the 500 f/4 with the 1.4 TC; I then remove the 1.4 (making sure not to change the focus on the lens while doing so) and fit the 2 x TC, using this method, I get very sharp images.
Be aware that with any lens having an aperture smaller than 2.8, there is no AF with the exception of the high end camera bodies with full frame. I use this with the 30D and Rebble XTi with good results but with no AF. Like with everything there is a compromise; using cameras with 1.6 crop factors (aps c) you get fare more telephoto performance than with the full frame cameras, sure you can crop the full frame image down to the size of 1.6, but by doing so you will end up with an image with far less pixel density as compared with the pixel density of the 1.6 crop factor cameras. To crop a full frame image to 1.6 and maintain the quality of the Rebel XTi, the full frame camera would have to be at least 20 mega pixels.
I have also used the 2 x TC combined with the 1.4 x TC with excellent results, however you loose 3 stops in doing so.
I would like to see Canon produce a high end Camera with a 1.6 crop factor having 12 or more mega pixels.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
The Canon Extender EF 2x II works incredibly well. With my 70-200L ISf/4 Canon glass, I loose the autofocusing but it is OK; -I know how to trick the Camera so the center point works- it keeps the IS at least atached to the 70-200L IS/f4. Some people complaim about affecting background blur by loosing two stops, but see the picture of the kid (F8 @200mm, that's 640mm with the Extender 2X II).
See the other picture, that's 0.6 miles away in a very hazy afternoon.

Comments about Canon Canon Extender EF 2x II - USA:
I purchased the 2x because I shoot at my daughters soccer games and wanted to extend the reach of a 70-200mm f2/8L lens I have and also use it to take other shots like astrophotography when attached to a 300mm f4L IS. It does provide the reach but a tripod/monopod is mandatory due to camera shake when hand holding. The IS is lost when attached to the 300/f4, but that is known before hand. Loosing two stops is another con, but given the price of 400mm or 600mm glass it is a bargain when used properly. Given my amatuer needs and digital photography's ability to shoot it and delete it a lot of experimentation can be done if you have available time. I would only recommend this product to someone shooting at extreme distances at a still subject and a narrow field of view. Also the loss of stops will affect background blur. I don't use it much because my 70-200mm does not have IS and IS is lost with the 300mm. It does it's job, but at a price.

The Canon Extender EF 2x II works incredibly well. With my f/2.8 Canon glass, the autofocusing was barely slowed. It moves smoothly. Mounting was easier than I expected. Overall, for an enthusiast and landscape or wildlife photographer, this accessory is necessary to achieve the length and distance without the cost of huge glass.

This is a good product, it makes amazing lengths because right in your face! The only disadvantage is that it doubles your f-stop so your pictures must be in a well lit area.
