Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

I bought this lens along with a refurbished Canon 50D mainly to take bird photos. I was using a Lumix FZ-35, but was unhappy with BIF results and close-ups of small birds. While I have taken some pictures which are very sharp, the majority are out of focus. My hunch is that while using the servo mode, the camera refocuses on a different object, as I have CP and do shake a bit. Hopefully with practice, I'll have a better rate of keepers. Otherwise, I'll need to use a tripod or exchange the lens for one with image stabilization. So at this point I'm not sure whether I would recommend this lens to a friend.

It is an amazing lens, and a great "bang for the buck". I ranked it 4 stars because to get the remaining one it should have IS and Weather Sealing.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

This lens works well with a DSLR mounted piggyback on a telescope. At 2.8 pounds it is lighter than telescopes in the 400mm class, though it cannot be used as an autoguider scope. The built in lens hood would be called a dew shield if this lens was marketed as a telescope. The 400mm focal length necessitates the included tripod ring and hand held use will be limited. Sharp focus is easily attained if DSLR has Live View such as Canon T1i. Lens is also great for birds by the feeder. Best is yet to come since this newly acquired lens has been hampered by late fall weather.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

For me the only problem is that it does not focus to less than approx. 14 feet, and I have missed at least one good shot as a result. Built like a tank and great optics. Attached hood is a great advantage.

This is actually my second copy of the 400 f5.6. It's sharp as can be and while an older design and not necessarily sexy, it's dependable and solid. One of my favorite lenses for birds in flight and hand held sports shooting.

It is a great lens with reasonable price.I wish if the f/stop highr than f/5.6, anyway it is O.K. I bought this lens after sold my sigma 50-500mm which I'm no longer satisfied with, comparing price with high performance super tele lens this is the best choice.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

Needs tripod, but have had suprising results hand holding if I am following large, slow moving hawks. Works well with 1.4X extender (must manual focus with extender). Have mounted to both 10D and 5D with equal satisfaction. Have very sharp enlargements equal to 20 X 30 prints had I not cropped (with 5D and 1.4
x extender).

Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

The lens is crystal clear. What I would expect from a Canon "L" series lens. I'm a bit disappointed that you can't auto-focus when using an extender, but I consider this a minor issue. It's easy to work with with silky focus control. A gem.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM AutoFocus Telephoto Lens with Built-in Hood & Case - USA:

I've owned and used this lens for about 3 years now and I can say I am quite satisfied.

A tele-photo lens as long as 400mm is not really for everyday use. Thus the use of this lens is quite restricted but it goes the same with all the other super telephoto lenses over 400mm focal length including those monterously heavy and expensive lenses with faster apertures.

When you use it for sports event shots or for some air shows, it really works fine. Focusing is fast, accurate and silky smooth. Results are sharp and contrasty, just like those from any other EF-L lenses. Max aperture of F5.6 would be too slow at times but these day's digital cameras are just amazing and pushing the setting to ISO 200 doesn't really kill you. You get a compact 400mm telephoto lens with equivalent aperture of F4.0 this way! Pros might not want the smallest degrades in the quality thus they would not agree, but this could work for amatures like I am, who does not make living with those pictures.

One more good thing with this lens is that it can "Auto focus" when used in combination with the 4-element designed Tamron 1.4X tele converters(I heard the EF converters from Canon or later 7-elemented tele converters don't work this way), while most auto focus lenses with F5.6 aperture lose their auto focusing capabilities when used with any tele converters.

EF 400 5.6 + Tamron TC 1.4X combination works exceptionally fine. The same fast and accurate auto focusing is still there and your lens becomes a 640mm F8.0 Super-telephoto "with Auto focusing capability." The results are good as well - pictures come out with a little bit less contrast but after a small adjustment on the computer you can hardly tell the difference. The optics stay sharp enough. Other's might not agree but I say it's well above average "acceptable" range. That is to my eyes, though. Using this combination on a sturdy tripod works well on a sunny and bright day, especially when you are taking pictures of small birds on the trees.

Using this lens is a lot of fun and it's light enough to carry around. It's not the lens I use the most frequently. Still I would love to keep it for the joy of using it once in a while whenever I can.
