Comments about Canon Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Image Stabilizer AutoFocus Super Telephoto Lens with Case & Hood - Gray Market:
Have been using the 70-200 F2.8 IS with TC, found it still not able to reach certain target. Considered both 500 and 600 mm. Finally decided on 500 mm as it is still marginally handheld-able. Tried it on the birds in the Bird Park and very happy with it. Continue to use it the nature reserve and got the Kingfisher which I had missed with all other lens.Good combination with 1.4X TC but AF does not work with 2XTC. More photo on [@]
Have been waiting for long time.

Wonderful lens for bird photography, I have been enjoying the quality and reach with this lens. I own another Canon prime lens (300mm), reach & quality are unmatchable with this lens.[...]

Comments about Canon Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Image Stabilizer AutoFocus Super Telephoto Lens with Case & Hood - Gray Market:
I have recently purchased a Canon EOS 1-D Mk111, and when combined with this lens, it has to be the fastest focussing combination I've ever struck in 37 years of photography! It works brilliantly with my wifes's EOS 30D, and particularly well with my old EOS 1V film body, too. It is sharp across the full range (even wide open), shows no image degradation when combined with the Canon 1.4x extender, and when mounted on a Wimberley WH-200 head and decent tripod, has to be the best bird photography setup available. I thought that the 300mm f2.8L was phenomenal, but this seems to take it up another peg! Fabulous bokeh!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Image Stabilizer AutoFocus Super Telephoto Lens with Case & Hood - Gray Market:
I bought this lens with a 30D camera and a Canon 1.4x TC [...] in Summer 06, As it is not a zoom its weight is light for 500mm f/4 performance. I have been a long time Nikon user and was going to get the Nikon 500 f/4, but the Nikon lens was more expensive and did not have VR/IS. The IS on the Canon is very good, I can shoot hand held at f/8 ISO 100 with bright light making it perfect for bird photography. This is the sharpest telephoto lens I have ever seen and works well with the 1.6 crop factor of the 30D; Fantastic results are gained using it with the 1.4X TC as well. I would like to see Canon produce a rugged 1.6 12 megapixle camera body to go with this lens.

May it be the best lens for wild life photo. Nothing bad. Only if the 400 EF 2,8 IS would weight the same I could reconsider my judgement. I never tried the 600 EF 4 IS, but for a walk wearing a tele, the 500 is the best choice.
