This lens is AMAZING and is one of my new favorite lenses - it is on my camera most of the time. It's a great walk-around lens. Wide open, you can photograph in incredibly low light - perfect for event photography. I've also used it for sports photography and have been very pleased with it's fast focusing. It is small and light (relative to my other favorite lens - the 70-200 2.8L ii). Love it!!

I love having this lens on one of my cameras at all times. Very easy to just throw in my bag and shoot just about anything. Just know it's a bit on the heavy side from the 1.4 which I previously owned.

Astonishingly fast lens! It captures so much light even in a pitch black room, simply incredible! Oh and the bokeh it produces... Top of the line lens! versatile for any occasion: portraits, low light, night shots, video recording, you name it. At f/1.2 iso can go up to 800 before visible noise appears shooting in the city at night. I've learned my lesson, I invest in top quality glass from now on, only the L series and nothing slower than f/2.8

I own the 24, 35, 50, 85, 100, 135, 200 2.8, 24-70, 17-40, 70-200 2.8, and 300 2.8 L lenses. I can say that out of all those fantastic lenses, this one is the best at low light focusing. I do about 50% weddings, so at receptions, I always use this lens. the build quality is excellent, the bokeh is beautiful and creamy, and the focus is fast, smooth and accurate. I dont use 1.2 a whole lot, but when I do, it is absolutely fantastic. I use this on a 5dmk2, 5d, 1dmk3, and 1dmk4

Surprisingly superb in view of some of the negative reviews I've seen. I find myself reaching for this
lens more than the 35L. On my 1D MK4 it focuses

I brought this lens for my Canon EOS 7D. Mainly, for portrait shooting. It is one of the most wonderful lens i own this far. Before i brought this lens on a crop body.. I was thinking about the 85mm f/1.2L II USM. I learned that my studio is very limited space. I brought the 50mm f/1.8 USM first before spend high amount of dollar on a 1.2 lens.. Beside, 50mm 1.8 was like $99. You can't bet that.. If you decided to buy this len, it is best to buy the 50mm 1.8. if you really like this lens, go buy this one.. I love ths distance and the bokeh so much. After 2 months later, i decided to get this len.. My next lens is 35mm 1.2L when it release..

Great for close-up portraits. Ridiculously smooth fore & back ground blur. F1.2 is very addictive. Faster shutter speeds and lower ISO's will give you keepers in low light photography. It's also small and compact. A little hefty for it's size but very comfortable to hold and shoot with. Matches perfectly with my 5DII.

This has become the work horse of my all my glass. It's DOF is outstanding and makes your subject Pop like no other lens. The build quality is rock solid and will last a lifetime. Some say it is heavy, I say it is solid and I love the way it feels. It will produce better image quality for you immediately. I Can't say enough good things about it. The cost is considerable, I don't blame anyone for purchasing a 1.4 50mm instead of the 1.2 lens. I always say invest in glass, not bodies. Every 3-4 years you can upgrade your body, but glass will last a very long time, and the 1.2 is built to last, no question!

I was a little hesitant at first about upgrading from the 1.4 to the 1.2, but I'm so glad I did. This lens can literally focus in the dark !! It's low light capabilities are amazing. I also LOVE the perspective this lens has. What I mean is 50mm on my prime has a field of view that I like much better than 50mm on my 24-70. I may not be explaining that well but just know it's an excellent lens :-) Oh, and the sharpness will not leave you dissappointed at all.

I've bought two of these in the last month (don't ask!) and both have been excellent. No back-focus problems, but be careful: the depth of field can be very shallow. Very rugged. Yes it is expensive, but I consider it an investment. The only problem I discovered is that the lens doesn't float and is not waterproof below 3 feet (don't ask!).

I put off getting this for a long time. Couldn't decide between the different Canon 50mm options...
However, I am very happy with my decision and purchase. No buyer's remorse!
I am using it for what I imagined...low light photography (among other things). It's a pleasure to have the option of candids, etc. without the intrusion of flash.
I really didn't use the 50mm focal length a lot with my film cameras, but I find this is a useful perspective for the 40d (1.6 crop). And it is actually fun to be using a prime lens again instead of a zoom! Very sharp. Great color. Good image quality. Nice size and weight. Great bokeh!
No perceivable issue with focus, etc. Except that the depth of field is, of course, quite narrow--as expected.

This is my 3rd L lens (24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L) and quickly becomming my favorite. I take a lot of pictures of my 15 month old son. He does not sit still so quick autofocus without a flash is important. This camera continues to amaze me in what it can capture under natural day light conditions while indoors. The depth of field is incredibly sharp and the bokeh is beautiful. Compared to my other 2 L lenses, this one is light as a feather. Highly recommended.

This is the perfect general purpose lens! It's light enough to be attached to my 5D at all times; Has excellent Bokeh due to it's 8-blade aperture; Resolves quite well with the 5D's 12MP sensor. AF is fast and accurate.

The only con: Lens front/back focuses a tiny little bit when shooting very close at apertures wider than 2.8. However, I can't see anyone using the non-macro lens in such a situation anyways!

Over the years I've owned both the Canon 50 f/1.8 MKII and the Canon 50 f/1.4, and I never really cared for either. However, this lens ROCKS. Sharp wide open, beautiful color and clarity, just a really nice lens to use.

This is a great lens, fantastically sharp, great contrast and virtually impervious to flare in strong back light situations. You can make images in low light situations that would be a disaster for a slower lens. This lens is solidly built to take the abuse that a pro would subject it to. If you use it on a 5D, I strongly suggest an EE-S focus screen to you can accurately manual focus all of your fast glass.

I first borrowed this lens at a 2-day workshop at the WPPI convention in Las Vegas. I loved it and decided to go ahead and make the investment. I LOVE it. My favorite use is low-light portraiture on location. As a wedding photographer, I have a lot of situations where this ability is crucial. I'm not setting up lights or doing any staging, so I'll get tons of use from the 50mm 1.2. I expect I will also begin using it to shoot quite a bit of my engagement sessions, as well as wedding receptions.

This lens takes you back when 35mm "film" cameras were equipped with a 55mm f1.8 "normal" lens. Depth of field control was adequate and allowed striking photos with blurred background. This lens definitely allows more creativity and tighter depth of field control and is well worth every dollar spent to own this lens.

I used this lens for a wedding a few weeks back and found the lens to be easy to use. All the protraits were done with the lens and all are great. Excellent depth of field. I purchased this lens before this wedding with my plan (for the wedding) in mind and have been more than pleased with the results. This is one of my most valuable tools.
