Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

The lens was initially bought as the standard lens I was going to use all the time. I didn't give the 1.6 factor to the focal length much thought and have later redefined the primary use for the lens.
Shooting portraits with f/1.4-1.8 has an enormous effect on the background and makes this purchase worth it's price.
The lens is also useful when attending children school shows and choir conserts with it's very moderate tele effect and the huge aperture.

The lens was not what I was looking for initially but it has grown on me, and I'm very satisfied.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

I bought this lens to allow for low light shots without a flash and for the super shallow depth of field, especially for portraits. My other EF lenses, the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8, required room for me to shoot. With this lens I can work more effectively in tighter quarters. On all three counts this lens has been a blessing and it is also a great lens to just leave on the camera when the whole bag of goodies is a hassle to tout along. Great lens for a reasonable price...don't hesitate to buy one!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

Canon has used a 50mm from 1933 to the late 1980s as its standard lens on most all of cameras. Its lightweight and fast as well and perfect for an all around lens. While it does have its limitations, I recommend it as part of any photographers stable of Canon lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

I use this as my main lens because of it is very sharp and fast. Being a prime lens, its not as flexible as a zoom, but the image quality makes up for it. It would also make a great lens to learn photography with because the fixed focal length forces you to be more creative.
If there is one downside, its the build quality. While its not bad, it cant compare to that of higher end lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

The new lens arrived with a damaged auto focus mechanism. I had to send it back to Canon for warranty repair. When it came back it worked as it should have right out of the box. Why pay new price when it had to be refurbished. Otherwise it's a great lens. Very sensitive light gathering abilities, sharp, crisp image, quick auto-focus and easy to use manually. Works equally well with digital or film.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

I tried the 'keyboard' example that I have seen on other sights - taking a picture of a computer keyboard from the side with aperture set to 1.4 will leave only 1-2 keys in focus. Very shallow DOF, this gives you a lot of creative options. I know this is not an 'L' lens, but it is an exceptional value and a quality product. I could not be happier with the lens!

Missed a lot of shots, mostly portraits, at 1.4. Out of focus.[...] Much better results stopped down. Also, it crashed once, had to have Canon repair it.Used with 20D, now with XTi.

Pros and Cons

Cons:

Best Uses:

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - Gray Market:

I think this lens is 98% perfect. Except the poor construction, I would give this lens a word "perfect." This lens tend to collect dusts and debris in the lens. Focusing requires the center part to protrude which opens the door for damaging the focusing motor. This is why you need a hood attached at all times to prevent possible damage. In terms of photo quality, this is the best lens I ever owned. I own several "L" series lenses, and I could say that this lens is comparable to the "L" series lenses. I mean, it is that good.
