Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Incredibly sharp when the iris is stopped down. Nice shallow depth of field when the you open it up. Great all around lens at a great price. Would be 5 stars but I got to play with the L Series f1.2 lens, which is somewhat better all around (though it is about 4-5 times the price).

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This was my first non kit lens and I'm glad it was. Very fast lens, in focusing and in regard to light. The f/1.4 was very good for low light situations or when you want a really shallow depth of field. My only complaint would be that 50mm on a crop sensor makes it tough to get some indoor shots. It's difficult to get the shots you want in small rooms, but that is no fault of the lens. It did everything I asked it to and more.

I was flip flopping between the cheapest f/1.8 and this one. But after reading around 50 very helpful reviews, I've decided to invest a little bit more and go with the f/1.4.
At the end, I am very happy with peformance of the lens so far.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

We love this for accentuating the lights in the background of the subject. You get a really great globe effect! Also, it perfect for getting lots of blur in the foreground and background. May be annoying when you have more than a few subjects to capture, as it only has a very limited depth of field. We know one wedding photographer that only uses this lens. Very creative!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Have only begun to use, but enjoy it for the purpose of portrait and portrait-like work on my Canon 40D.

Tested at home for comparison to my ever-inexpensive 50mm f/1.8 II. Found this f/1.4 to be readily superior wide open in terms of image quality and clarity up to around f/8 compared to the f/1.8 version. At that point and beyond they seemed fairly equal with the f/1.4 still getting the nod for better bokeh and a slightly better clarity/focus.

Oddly enough, I found the f/1.8 to be better at resolving detail in far background items when shot at smaller apertures (above f/18) when compared to the f/1.4

So for me I find the f/1.4 a superior lens for its quality of bokeh, overall image quality in wider apertures (when compared to the f/1.8), but that it isn't markedly superior to the f/1.8 for subjects greater than 50 or so feet away and at smaller apertures.

But as I'll be using it for closer subjects and want the narrower depth-of-field this seems to have been a good investment. I'm not certain it is worth almost four times the price of the f/1.8 except in regards to the just mentioned issues.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Excellent image quality, very nice background blur. Razor sharp images corner to corner, this is an excellent portrait lens. I am a little disapointed with the construction quality, the focus ring feels cheap and loose not buttery smooth and solid like the one on the 60mm Macro. Autofocus is slower and not as fast in low light as newer lenses with the the ultrasonic ring motor. All in all an excellent lens, a classic and a must have for any serious photographer's kit.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I have found it difficult to put my camera down after attaching this lens, it is an absolute joy to use. The images are sharp and the bokeh is amazing. Portraits taken with this lens are always striking. However, the shallow depth of field is not very forgiving, you may have to select your AF points manually to be spot on.

I use mine for portraiture, events and indoor/low light photography. Also when storing it, set the focus ring to infinity before doing so to avoid the focus mechanism being damaged.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I tried this lens out on my 5D Mark II. I used it outdoors in daylight, at night, and indoors. When the autofocus was accurate, the images were nice and clear with good bokeh. At f/1.4 there is some halation, but if you know to expect it or enjoy the look then it is acceptable. But the autofocus was too unreliable. If it was used purely in manual focus mode then it could be useful. Since there is such a narrow depth of field at f/1.4, it is critical that the focus be accurate and the autofocus on this lens could not pull it off reliably.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

A great general purpose lens on full frame cameras. I start most of my photo events with this lens on a full frame camera. This allows me to quickly capture the essence of the event I am photographing before I switch to another lens. A very good value for the money for a very fast prime lens. Nevertheless, unless it is used on a full frame camera, it may be of a limit use in general purpose photography.

I really love this lens. Plain and simple.

A joy for portraits and low light photographs. Fairly versatile as well.

I would not recommend this over the 1.8 if you're a relatively new/amateur SLR user though. You likely won't notice the differences until you become more experienced, so keep that in mind.

But if you're ready to move up from the 1.8 (or happen to need to replace it), I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

When I switched from Nikon to Canon I bought this lens because I love having a light weight fast lens for indoor and night time shots. I was used to the Nikon D700 with their 50mm 1.4 AFS G. I bought this lens to go with my 5DMKII. I may have had a bad copy, but it was soft at all apertures, back focused and was generally inferior in all ways to the Nikon G. I sold it for quite loss 3 months later. If it can't lock focus and deliver sharp results, the extra speed is worthless. I ended up buy in a 24-70 which is worlds sharper. That is just wrong. Primes should always be better than zooms. Anyway, I am looking at the 1.2 but have heard that has back focusing issues as well. I might have to break down and get the 1.8 which seems to get good reviews for being sharp.

Great lens at a great price with the Canon once a year rebate. I purchased it for my Canon 40d with the 1.6x crop its actually a 80mm but works great. Figured once I get my 5d Mark II one day it will be even better. The quality is good but without the seals like on the L series lenses it drops down a bit. But overall a wonderful lens and fun for an amateur photographer such as myself. Next lens will be a 28-105mm which I have heard wonderful things about.

As an amateur photographer, I bought this lens, because I would like to do some portrait photography. Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Well, I feel funny leaving a review since I am a Very novice mom-photographer. But, I am learning! And this prime lens seems the perfect place to start my learning process. I think the best part of this lens is the instant gratification of beautiful pictures even when one is just starting out. Picture quality is superb.

I could have gone with the 1.8, but read about its construction and decided to spend the extra for stronger build and that slight increase with the f1.4. I'm glad I did as the lens is a joy to use. I think this lens would be a work horse for any level of photographer as it is light weight, usm and performs beautifully.

I haven't found a negative and do not expect it. Some people might still complain about build but I think those guys are accustomed to the L series.

Buy the lens! There is no way you will regret it.

I have been very pleased with the output of this lens. Very sharp images and the DOF looks great. Autofocus has been very fast so far and not clunky like the 50mm 1.8. Only flaw I see is the plastic body.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This lens is a fantastic and substantial upgrade from the much cheaper 50mm f/1.8 that I purchased it as a replacement for. The construction feels much more solid (as it should, considering that the 1.8 is mostly plastic). The autofocus is also much, much faster and more reliable. The bokeh when the lens is wide open has a real smooth, buttery feel to it - it's simply gorgeous. On top of all that, who wouldn't want to have two more stops of light available to them?

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This lens is a step up from the 50mm 1.8 "nifty fifty", and takes a wonderful picture. I did learn from this purchase, that I am not going to be satisfied by anything less then the Canon L class lenses, so if you're a serious photographer, you may wish to take that into account when deciding if this is worth the investment.

I'm quite pleased with it, but I realize I will, at some point, upgrade again.

The most important thing I use this lens for is late afternoon shooting...no hard shadows, high iso. However being a pro (poor pro) with limited cash...I'm trying to do something with a [$] lens which I see done with a $1400 lens...THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!! I may send back to canon with my body (30d) and have them look at. I shoot lots of 2.8 lenses but just can not seem to get anything sharp enough (eyes) out of this combo...I've enclosed the best I could get from it...acceptable. Good luck with yours..

I do a lot of photo work for my business, as a designer and working in the mixed martial arts industry. I needed something that shoots fast in low light---and this lens is great. The only drawback is trying to get the focus perfect in low light situations. If you have enough light to focus in the low light---you are golden---but this lens is literally night vision when you do shoot in low light.

I use the lens for pleasure, and have enjoyed it for the last two weeks. It gives an incredibly narrow length of focus at f1.4, and it gives you a wide range of options. Definitely the best deal for the money in the 50mm market.

I have used the canon 50mm 1.8, the "nifty fifty" and the build quality turned me off. This lens is built much better and for the quality level of images it is able to produce, a great bargain.
I have several lenses, a couple of canon L lenses and this little gem lives on my camera most of the time. It's light and just a lot of fun. If I could only have one lens, this would be the one.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This lens gets soft down at f/1.4 and has significant vignetting at that setting on a f-f camera but it is still quite useful in very low-light conditions. At f/2 or more it improves considerably and at f/2.8 or so it is very sharp and has very little CA. I have started to use it more and more for some of my landscape shots because it is sharper and has much less CA than my "L" class zooms. The manual focus override is a nice feature - unusual for this class of lens.
Only minor complaint is that the focus ring has a little slop and is not as smooth as on "L" class lenses. However it's still well worth the extra money over the f/1.8 model.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This is an amazing lens. I was tempted to purchase the 50mm f/1.2L lens, but opted for this due to its economic nature. I was thoroughly impressed with the output of this lens. I primarily take photos of landscapes, insects, animals and flowers. This is makes it the perfect lens for these subject.

Since it is a prime lens, it will take a bit of getting use to if you come from a strict telephoto zoom lens background (as I did). But once you master the functionality of this lens, you can produce amazing results. I'm still learning, but what I've taken so far exceeded my expectations. Very sharp at f/2.0 and higher. At f/1.4, still very sharp, but DOF is very shallow and the sweet spot band is hard to find, which is why many users claim it produces soft image at this aperture.

I purchased this lens to replace the kit lens. It is far superior than the kit lens. This lens is great for indoor and outdoor use. It shines over the kit lens indoors. Many photos can be taken without flash and still have great quality.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Compared the Canon EF to the alternatives (Sigma and Zeiss) and found by taking actual pix that the better resolution figures for the others did not provide any sharper pictures or increased contrast. The bokeh of the canon leaves the others in the dust and the autofocus is faster (than the Sigma)and very accurate (I did adjust the micro focus by -2). At less cost it's a Bargian.

I use the lens to photograph my horses, and the results are fabulous. Fast lens that STOPS the action!!! Such a great improvement over the kit lens that came with my Rebel xsi - I would suggest just buying the rebel body, and this lens from the beginning. I was not at all pleased with the photos I was getting with the kit lens. This lens was worth every penny!!!

The bokeh on this lens is simply beautiful. I don't own many lenses, but I've never been able to get images as sharp as what I've been able to get with the 50mm f/1.4 The bokeh is amazing, smooth as butter. I love this lens, and I doubt it spends too much time in the bag and off the camera. Even with my Rebel's 1.6 crop factor, I'm well pleased.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Let me start off by saying that this is one of my favorite lenses. For the money, it's a bit of a step up from the 50 1.8, which I returned as it had dust specks from the factory and a horrid "focus ring".

The 1.4 has a proper focus ring w/scale, full-time manual focussing, though is a somewhat large diameter for a 50mm. If you plan on shooting a lot of shallow depth of field or available light photography, this lens can do it. Walkaround lens? It's fantastic. But beware, f/1.4 is really crummy, the fuzziness (halation) really doesn't render objects, even dead center, in good color, contrast or sharpness. Stop down to 2.0 and this thing becomes very sharp. At 5.6 it's truly sharp, corner-to-corner.

I find it to be a great overall lens because its size, weight and price allow you to do all manner of things, it's great to learn on with a full-frame camera. A little tight on crop bodies, but hey then it's a face-portrait lens.

Though optically it's quite an old design, it's still a good value. Just don't expect much at 1.4. Buy the lens hood if you can, it can improve image quality most situations.

Very very versatile.

I got this lens for my Canon XT SLR as a portrait lens for my kids. I love the sharpness and excellent brokeh. The lens construction is very good and couldn't be happier with it. Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I am a volunteer storm chase/spotter for the National Weather Service. I also use a Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens for 50% of the shots. Don't always have the oppertunity to set up a tripod - things sometimes happen way too fast. I read one million reviews before I decided to buy - or so it seems. This lens is often used as a refernce lens against the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L in comparisons testing - that should tell you all you REALLY need to know about the quality/focus/contrast/color. And at this price - it doesn't zoom - so learn to use your feet and get L-quality shots. No Joke. Adorama told me on the phone that they stand behind their lenses 100%. You can't beat that - either. I use a XTi - and the kit lens is JUNK - I cannot use it because it doesn't work in low light. I can't use a flash - because the dust particles obscure/taint the view when lit up in the air - and ruins the shot. This is a F A S T lens. Opening the aperture to f/6.3 still gives me a handheld shot with a reasonably fast shutter speed at ISO 100-400 in very low light. Underneath a storm base can be very, very, dark - almost black. As soon as I got it out of the box[...]- I tested it for sharpness, color, and contrast. XLNT/BEAUTIFUL PIX!!!!It sees the world the nearly the same depth of field as my minds eye does. I can easily see how someone could use this to make some great art shots. No doubt about it. Good deal -overall- from Adorama - too!I'm pleased so far with the lens - and Adorama.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Well I had to read alot of reviews before buying it and I think people do a great job describing the PROS and CONS sincerely.

I checked this lens sharpness and bokeh by focusing on an iron rod's end. When I took the picture, OMG I couldnt believe, there was a dust particle, probably a hair and it was in extreme sharp focus. The rest was what we call BOKEH.

So, in my view, this is ONE of the best lens you should buy. Cheap, 1.4 (wow), Amazing details, Extreme Fast (wow), Light weight, and the bokeh...OMG i simply love it. It brings a whole new dimension and life to a picture.

So dont miss this lens as it will serve you in many occasions, which are not even listed here.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

It never ceases to amaze me that people (like Angie from Mt View) who obviously possess little to no skill with a camera wont hesitate to rate an exceptional product with a "1-star" simply because they have NO IDEA how to use it!! Some of the very BEST photos in my portfolio were taken with the 50mm f/1.4. Although it is a bit soft wide open, it is sharp at f/2 and very sharp when stopped down to f/2.8 or narrower. The 8-blade aperture creates a supurb bokeh (foreground/background blur), and the recessed front element essentially eliminates the need for a lens hood. Although it uses a Micro USM rather than a Ring USM (the latter being superior), the f/1.4 incorporates a clutch mechanism to allow full time manual focus (where other Micro USM lenses do not). Its small and light weight, and the overall build quality is decent. It is a great portrait lens, and works well for low-light indoor photography. The low price makes this lens an excellent choice for intermediate to advanced amateur photogs. Pros will probably opt for Canon's 50mm f/1.2L...but, dollar for dollar, the 1.4 is a much better value!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

This is a very good, fast, normal lens, and it is certainly worth the money, especially considering the far more expensive Canon 50mm f/1.2L USM. (In fact, the MTF chart of this lens appears at least as good as that of the f/1.2L, available on the Canon website.) Any lens with f/2.8 or lower is considered to be "fast," and therefore this lens is very fast indeed. Consequently, many people will be tempted to always set the aperture at 1.4 and try to shoot in close-to-total darkness. This is not a good idea, as it usually results in a blurry image that comes from either camera shake the inability to achieve focus in very low light. But that is not the fault of this lens - the same would be true for any lens with aperture set so wide, since the depth of focus is razor thin. I find that the best method is to use Shutter Priority set at 1/60 sec. or faster. But, once you figure out how to use a fast lens like this, you can get some really pretty shots.

My first prime lens. Very pleased so far. Fun to play with on my XTi. The effects you can create with a narrow depth of field are amazing. At f/1.4, you can focus on eyes and have the nose blur out. Backgrounds fade away so the subject is all you see, and portraits look perfect (as long as you remember basics of composition, WB, etc). Lets a lot of light in so indoor pics with no flash is no problem. With decent illumination indoors, shutter speeds can be fast enough to stop action. Really fun with little kids acting out and 3fps. Clarity and color are great. Sharp when stopped down if you need to. Construction is much better than expected from pictures of product. No complaints.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Everybody should own at least one prime (non-zoom) lens, and this should be among the first to add to your collection. It's wide maximum aperture opens up a new world of pictures to those that have before only shot with relatively slow zooms. Shallow depth of field really draws out the subject, and you'll be able to shoot in low-light conditions that before would have been impossible (or required noisy high ISO settings).

On a Canon crop sensor (40D, 30D, Digital Rebel, etc.), this is equivalent to an 80mm lens, bringing it close to the classic portrait 85mm focal length. The wide aperture also makes it well suited for shooting portraits.

Unfortunately, it's bokeh is a bit harsh (though better than the 50mm f/1.8), producing out-of-focus highlights that look like ringed disks. You'd have to step up to the much more expensive 50mm f/1.2 L lens to get better results at this length, or shoot with the longer 85mm f/1.8, for roughly the same price as this lens.

It's a very good, but not perfect, lens that spends a lot of time on my Canon 40D.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I shoot star sky to test the lens, so disappointed. From F1.4 TO F2.0, it shows strange shape of stars even not at the corner. That means the F1.4 to F2.0 is not usable, or at least not acceptable. I pay the price for F1.4, but got a lense I can only use above F2.2!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I'm an artist photographer so I spend quite an amount of time working with my images.

This lens have helped me to fully enhance what I want in a photograph.

Its very sharp at 5.6 and yes, its soft at 1.4 but that softness is great when used correctly.

You won't be dissapointed with the performance of the lens, its very silent, fast autofocus.

The contrast is absolutely great I almost never change this lens from my camera and I have it with me all the time, I just love it.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

The lens was initially bought as the standard lens I was going to use all the time. I didn't give the 1.6 factor to the focal length much thought and have later redefined the primary use for the lens.
Shooting portraits with f/1.4-1.8 has an enormous effect on the background and makes this purchase worth it's price.
The lens is also useful when attending children school shows and choir conserts with it's very moderate tele effect and the huge aperture.

The lens was not what I was looking for initially but it has grown on me, and I'm very satisfied.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I bought this lens to allow for low light shots without a flash and for the super shallow depth of field, especially for portraits. My other EF lenses, the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8, required room for me to shoot. With this lens I can work more effectively in tighter quarters. On all three counts this lens has been a blessing and it is also a great lens to just leave on the camera when the whole bag of goodies is a hassle to tout along. Great lens for a reasonable price...don't hesitate to buy one!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

Canon has used a 50mm from 1933 to the late 1980s as its standard lens on most all of cameras. Its lightweight and fast as well and perfect for an all around lens. While it does have its limitations, I recommend it as part of any photographers stable of Canon lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I use this as my main lens because of it is very sharp and fast. Being a prime lens, its not as flexible as a zoom, but the image quality makes up for it. It would also make a great lens to learn photography with because the fixed focal length forces you to be more creative.
If there is one downside, its the build quality. While its not bad, it cant compare to that of higher end lenses.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I tried the 'keyboard' example that I have seen on other sights - taking a picture of a computer keyboard from the side with aperture set to 1.4 will leave only 1-2 keys in focus. Very shallow DOF, this gives you a lot of creative options. I know this is not an 'L' lens, but it is an exceptional value and a quality product. I could not be happier with the lens!

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

The new lens arrived with a damaged auto focus mechanism. I had to send it back to Canon for warranty repair. When it came back it worked as it should have right out of the box. Why pay new price when it had to be refurbished. Otherwise it's a great lens. Very sensitive light gathering abilities, sharp, crisp image, quick auto-focus and easy to use manually. Works equally well with digital or film.

Pros and Cons
By cmonygoVerified Purchaser from Loma Linda, CA on 2/5/2007
Pros:
Clear Glass, Easily Accessible Controls, Easily Mounted, Large aperture, Lightweight
Cons:
Poor construction
Best Uses:
Fun, Portraits, Travel
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Canon Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens - USA:

I think this lens is 98% perfect. Except the poor construction, I would give this lens a word "perfect." This lens tend to collect dusts and debris in the lens. Focusing requires the center part to protrude which opens the door for damaging the focusing motor. This is why you need a hood attached at all times to prevent possible damage. In terms of photo quality, this is the best lens I ever owned. I own several "L" series lenses, and I could say that this lens is comparable to the "L" series lenses. I mean, it is that good.
