Super Macro!
If you are considering this lens get it. It is the only lens on the market that does what it does.
Make sure you have a good lighting set up, you'll need it. The depth of field is incredibly small so you'll want to shoot at higher f-stops.
A macro rail and a very good mini tripod is a must.
At these magnification levels any vibration is picked up. It will take a while to get good with this lens.
When you can get a good shot, the quality is very good.
This is a serious macro only lens. As you probably know already the focus and zoom are the same ring on this lens. You'll need to move the camera to focus when you want a given magnification.

Comments about Canon Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Manual Focus Telephoto Lens - USA:
With this lens you see things in your photographs that you will not see with the naked eye, the inside of a flower can look like some kind of bizarre forest. I tried using this with a cheap ring flash which worked well for exposure but seeing was difficult. I got the Canon 14 EX ring flash and it works great for preview up to 4X. Most of my shots are handheld. This lens is not hard to use if you know how to focus manually. Depth of field is almost nonexistent. I would have hated using this with film. But with digital you get instant feedback.

In the specifications Canon give a Maximum Length which should read Minimum Length (3.8" @ 1X) when retracted. The Max Length is actually (9.4" @ 5X) when fully extended. This indicate nothing wrong with the superlative lens. Canon has taken the price/pain out of extension tubes/bellows/lens setup for Macrophotography in one simple elegant step. A rare bargain at the price. Works beautifully with Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite and Canon D-EOS cameras. I am making a study of minerals and crystals + small electronic and other objects.
In two words "Macro Heaven" for 1-5X magnification! Thanks Canon!

Greatest Macro lens ever! Can be hand held at 1 to 1.5X; anything more than that and a tripod or monopod is warranted. It takes the honeybees a while to adjust to the photographer's presence when you are shooting them and their food source from a distance of fractions of an inch, but they calm down eventually and pose for the camera.

Comments about Canon Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Manual Focus Telephoto Lens - USA:
This lens isn't for the casual shooter, since it doesn't focus to infinity. It's made to do one thing, shoot larger than life size, and it does it easier than using a bellows. It's the best lens for the insect photographer, but a good flash is necessary.

Excel objective. But it should not be used with a numerical camera. The MPE65 emphasizes all dust present on the sensor even those nonvisible A the naked eye. I tested this objective on a 300D, 20D, 30D, 400D and 5D and the same result. Conclusion: excel on silver reflex camera and especially not to buy on a numerical reflex camera. Foot-note: I am sorry for my English (American), but it were necessary that I announce my experiment to you of disastrous of this objective.
