Bought this lens when first turning pro. Could not afford the 2.8 IS. At first was able to work with it just fine. The lens is amazingly tack sharp in all the photos I took. Except that I found I really missed the IS when shooting at slower speeds. That is partly due to its weight. It is heavy. I knew that going in but didn't think about holding it still by hand in low light being affected by the weight. After long session it gets every more difficult.
If it were not for that I would have given it 5 stars easily. If you are going to use a tripod then it will be fine. I am going to sell it and purchase the f4 with IS for now.

This is my first 70-200 lens. I was thinking a lot about all Canon 70-200 lenses family and I decided to buy 70-200 f/2.8 non IS version. For it's price you get fast 2.8 f-stop and pro built quality. Lens attract attention, it's heavy for handheld shots and you have to consider buying at least a monopod. Lens creates beautiful pictures with great colors. Autofocus is super fast and silent. Internal zooming is another great benefit.
I love this glass.

First off, I ordered this when I was 16, last May. Now, I'm not some guy who's been taking pictures for years, but I have been shooting with Canon products, of my own, SLR and DSLR, since December, 2006, and I can assure you that this is by far the best 70-200mm f/2.8L lens, on the market, for Canon users.

The main reason why people choose not to buy this lens is because is doesn't have the "incredible" Canon IS (Image Stabilization). I have IS in one of my Canon lenses, and I'm not going to say it's a bad thing. In fact, it's quite the opposite and has actually saved me on a few shots.

However, I'll ask you to consider this when making a purchase or considering a purchase of this lens:

If the lens NOT having IS is a problem to you, is it really worth the hundreds of $ more you're going to have to spend to get it? Would you not rather buy a very nice, heavy duty and light-weight monopod for under a hundred $ and save some money to go towards other lenses, or a down payment on a car?

In my opinion, IS isn't all that people crack it up to be. Hands down - and that's coming from an experienced and avid Canon photographer who HAS used SEVERAL IS lenses.

There are a couple of logical reasons why you don't need IS on this model, too. First off, it's an f/2.8 model, and second off, it comes supplied with a tripod collar for that reason - to attach it to a stabilization device, which makes IS redundant.

This lens is truly amazing.

From side lines of high school football games to shooting photos of the moon and the stars, this lens has literally covered it all. The other thing that it's done surprisingly well in has been indoor, low-light basketball. If you've ever shot basketball, you know that it's a tough thing to do without a fast lens (f stop wise). This lens fits the bill wonderfully.

Go buy it!

This lens stays on my camera most of the time. I mostly use for my kids sporting events and wildlife photography. Lens is still very sharp at 200mm. Not quite enough reach for small animals at a far distance. You cannot beat L-Quality glass. White color attracts alot of attention.

It was hard to pull the trigger on a lens that costs this much money, at least for me anyway. And, I hesitated about doing this online. Well, I spent the money and I spent it with Adorama. It has turned out to be a fantastic choice. During the first week that we owned it, we took pictures in a poorly lit gym at our child's school. I shot at 2.8 with no flash and had incredible results. The sharpness is amazing, the color is great, and the focus is accurate and fast. We are now able to get shots that we could not get before, it's just that simple. This is a pro lens. Will it make you a pro? Of course it won't. Will it allow you take better shots? Without question, you will get better results!!!! So drink the Kool-Aid.

One warning if this is your first L lens. You will start looking to replace your kit lens for your shorter focal lengths.

I already own the F4 version but I wanted the 2.8 for sports (My grand-daughters are always involved in something). The 2.8 is quite heavy compared to the F4 so they will both have their uses. The F4 maybe more often.

I have wanted this lens ever since I got my first EOS body, back in the days of film. I FINALLY have it, and it was worth the wait, and every penny. I could go on and on about the silent, instantaneous AF and the tack sharp images the lens produces. The same with it durability and solid feel. Bottom line, if you can only have one, top of the line lens, in your bag. This should be it.

I've owned this lens for over a year and took it on a trip to Yellowstone. The lens by itself performs very well, but the image quality will suffer with 2x extender. Because there is no IS on this lens I'd recommend getting a sturdy tripod if you plan shooting outdoors/wildlife. One of the bigger issues for me was the lack of weather sealing on this unit, something that one would probably expect from and "L" glass.

I opted for the f2.8 over the f4 because I take mainly sports action shots. I just shot a little league baseball game in bright sunshine using apparature priority set at 2.8 and I have never seen any better photographs. The RAW photographs required little processing in Photoshop.

I use this lens for capturing sporting, landscape and special events (i.e. newborn babies, milestones, birthdays, etc). I find it 'somewhat' slow to focus when shooting objects coming towards the lens. I have both a Canon 1D III & 1Ds III and have similar issues on both - even with servo. Seems to only be an issue when items quickly approach the rig. Other than this issue the lens is flawless, takes beautiful, consistent shots in low and vast amounts of light. My only gripe is with Adorama: I bought this lens in "E" condition (minor scratches and signs of use), lens looked like it had been in a war zone and back! If I were to purchase again I would buy refurbished or new despite the much higher cost.

I cannot say how much I love this lens. I was just recently introduced to Photography by my wife. She actually thought I needed a hobby and I fought with a knee jerk reaction and just like norm when dealing with her, I lost. Also this is coming from a fan of "No pictures here please!"

Ok so she surprised me with what she called a starter kit. First of all what a way to start this thing had more gadgets and options that I am use to. What ever happened to the point and shoot. Well with that being said she handed over a Rebel TI1. This camera was fun. I took it on walk abouts' and captured some pretty descent macro photos which after researching and studying was actually mediocre but the stock lens was way better in performance than anything I previously had... So then it hit me I caught the bug... I read reviews and currently reading a few books on macro photo's and How to take action shots without banging your camera off the wall due to frustration.

I finally decided that my next purchase were lenses and I opted for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 without the IS as my first choice. After reading all the reviews I was convinced that this would make magic for me. I did some more research and found Adorama. After ordering and getting the confirmation I was chomping at the bit waiting for the lens to arrive checking ups tracking to find out where my toy was. Ok, so the lens did not have an "S" on it and it didn't belong to any Genie with phenomenal cosmic power. It was pretty big first of all and if you were to take a look at it kind of blah... but when I put that sucker on and ran off to take some pictures of my sons practice... oh my god. The pictures were fantastic I like to say the image were sublime. So to make a long story short. The auto focus is silent; it's fast, super fast in comparison to the kit lens. I love the fact that I can take photos at dusk and not be affected. I plan on using this mainly for my sons football games and so far it fits the bill perfectly.. It out performs my buddies Nikon setup. Oh by the way he is drooling over the fact that this is an L series. I am posting a couple of pictures taken at my sons practice... don't be too harsh on the judgment thing I am learning the possibilities of the TI1 and this lens but so far so good... well great actually.

I shoot a ton of sports action photography with this lens. I also have the Sigma version which works just as well but I have broken the lens mount on it twice. I decided to get the Canon lens just for it's durability and so far it hasn't disappointed. It is more expensive than the Sigma lens but as far as speed, or quality of pictures, it's not worth the extra cost.

I am a part-time photojournalist shooting sporting events and associated social events for magazine publication. I also shoot scenics for calendar submissions. I think this is possibly Canon's finest zoom lens. Build quality is like a tank, autofocus on a "1" series body is fast and accurate. IS is great if your subjects are motionless and the light is low, but my subjects move so I use f/2.8 to maximize shutter speed for a given ISO to stop action or use a flash at social events. A pro PJ once told me that paying for "L" glass was the ticket to publishing professional images, and boy was he right. The only downside is that lugging this lens around all day attached to a "1" series body and another "L" zoom in a photo backpack plus a tripod is very tiring.

Super dialed lens! Love this thing, just replaced my 70-200 f/4L with this and I couldn't be happier, I should have bought this in the first place! I shoot with a 5D so i get a very slight amount of fall off around the corners at wide open, but much less than I encountered with the f4 at wide open. You'll get used to the weight, I run around motocross tracks with it all day...you eventually forget its that heavy!

This is a must have if you really want to take your photography to the next level. Images are sharp and crisp. I haven't found a time that I couldn't use it. I little on the heavy side when just holding it for long periods, but if it's on a monopod or tripod it's no problem at all. Great price and great service.

To bad they do not have 6 stars it deserves it. I use it on everything including close up adding a Cokin close up filter. The pictures are unbeliebably clear and the color great. I do use it on a tripod for the most part as I am shooting indoors now (living in Wi. to Cold this time of year). Can not wait to get outside with it. If there is anything to detract it would be it;s weight it is a little heavy compare to my 28-200 Sigma but not to bad.

This is a plug for this "Reconditioned by Canon" lens. The lens has a manufacturing date of April 2007, has no visible marks, scratches or wear (including the mount). So, let's just say it was new, probably a return. The only thing missing was the original box - don't need it anyway. The lens seems a bit soft - not unpleasant, but I haven't really given it a good workout yet. The color it delivers is "L" class, so nothing to add there. I owned the Canon MkII & the Canon 70-200 2.8L.
At 2.8, it is fast enough to freeze motion when shooting indoor sports such as hockey and basketball.

It has also worked well for soccer at medium range, though a
300-400mm lens would reach better across the large field. I borrowed a
1.4x extender and used it one day on the soccer field with this lens, and
it helped capture more action.

Contrast and color is gorgeous. Despite the long reach, it is actually a
wonderful portrait lens and I have taken some fantastic pictures of
family and friends -- a few times I have been caught without enough
room to back up, though, given the minimum zoom of 70mm.

I have had this product for only a month and already shot thousands of photos. Super crisp , quick and quiet zoom, an attention getter! It gets alittle heavy with prolonged use so make sure you have a very reliable and sturdy tripod for long exposures. It is well worth the price and will outlast and outshoot the look-alikes.

My main shooting is hockey and basket ball. I am doing this as a side trade. This lens can stay in cold environment along with my 20D without giving me any trouble. Sharp focus, quick and solid zoom, ample light allow me to pick up many details of the player in action. I also love this baby when it comes to need it for portrait photography. Definitely you need a monopod as it will become heavier in your hand.

This is a must have lens for Canon users who want to shoot sporting events (particularly basketball and volleyball) in an indoor arena. The 2.8 aperture across 70 to 200 mm enables you to capture some good action shots in the all so familiar poor lighting conditions of a gymnasium or sports arena. It's a bit heavy and you become quite aware of that after using it.

I've had this lens for about five years. I wish when I first started photography three decades ago, I would've got this lens instead of buying a bunch of cheaper telephotos that ultimately didn't deliver the goods. This lens should be a staple in any serious photographer's inventory. The lens is built well, although recently I had my camera and the 70-200 blow over on a tripod. After that incident, I was getting occasional Code 99's on my camera. I sent it to Canon, and it was repaired quickly and at a reasonable price.

I purchased this lens and the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM. Both are exceptionally well built. The only advantages I note for the Sigma are the black finish of the lens and the dollar savings.

With cost difference already stated the advantages of the Canon are as follows:
1) Sharper images-in my independent, real world shoot out between both lenses, with controlled lighting on static scenes, the Canon L series glass produced sharper images over the Sigma EX glass.
2) More accurate color-in the same test I noted that the Sigma lens had a "cooler" (slightly tinted blue) result. I have no means for measuring the degree of discrepancy except that on my monitor the Canon lens was more accurate to the scene.
3) Faster focus lock-Canon's USM drive is faster than Sigma's HSM. Both are equally silent.

While the off-white body of the lens makes photojournalism a tad less unobtrusive there is no doubt that you are serious about your mission--no matter if it is a child's portrait, a wedding, or on the sidelines of the NFL (Canon is the official camera of...)

The Sigma EX series is an excellent choice if budget is an issue. But when you invest in Canon's L series, even before you release the shutter, you are telling your clients and future clients that you are professional strength!

First let me say that I am partial to L glass. Yes, it is a heavy lens. Some people will find it too heavy but I find it reassuring. Like all L lenses, this lens is very well built. It has a solid feel to it with all the componants, such as the focusing ring and distancing ring firm and precise. It is a great portrait, glamor, and fashion lens as it gives breathing room between you and the model. I use this lens for this purpose alot and have never been disappointed with the results.

While it is slightly on the heavy side (which isn't surprising), this lens is sharp as a tack and focuses exceedingly quickly and quietly. The controls are very easy to reach, and overall the lens has almost no flaws.

This is a wonderful multipurpose lens with high quality glass. It is heavy so expect to feel the weight of it in your hands. Ideally use a tripod or monopod for detail zoom shots.

I have been using it for nearly a month and have been very impressed with the color and sharpness. It is streets ahead of the Sigma lens that I replaced by buying this lens. Yes you can expect to pay a premium for this lens but in this case you definitely get what you pay for.

The included case, tripod ring and hood are an added bonus.

To date, I have used this lens for photographing football and wrestling. The large aperture, which allows a lower ISO setting, is great for night time football and the poorly lit gyms at most schools. The result is crisp, clear, grain free images! The F4 lens just will not get the job done.
