Great lens, sure a constant F4 would be great, but you would give up so much (size, wieght, price)to get it. This is a GREAT travel/general purpose zoom. I have other glass for dedicated sports and portraits, but for a fantastic vacation lens this is it! This plus a standard to wide zoom and I am set for a walk around kit.

Comments about Canon Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens - USA:

I haven't had this lens very long, but so far I am very impressed with the image quality and fast autofocus. I have both the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II and the 100-400. The IQ of this lens is almost as good as the 70-200 in my opinion (with the exception of bokeh) and definitely out performs my copy of the 100-400. Autofocus is amazingly fast. Definitely better than the 100-400. I haven't compared the autofocus to my 70-200, but my impression is that it's about on par. I'm seriously considering selling my 100-400. I would miss that extra focal length occasionally, but for most of my telephoto needs, this lens is super!

On the downside, it's heavy compared to other 70-300's, but it's an L lens so that's to be expected. And the bokeh is not like a 2.8 lens...but it's NOT a 2.8 lens, so that's also to be expected. It would be nice if it was an f/4.0 constant aperture...but then it would weigh more and cost more. If these are the only downsides I can find....well, it's a very, very good lens.
