The bokeh on this lens is lovely. The first time I went out with this lens I used it for a Bar Mitzvah. Its a great way to put distance between you and the subject for candids. It doesn't look intimidating on the camera so people aren't even aware of you. For the price you pay, this lens cant be beat.

Have used it nearly a year now without complaints on a crop. My copy is great at 1.8 and even better by 2.5. Not completely round specular highlights, but its also a lot cheaper than the L version, which focuses much slower.

If you are looking to upgrade to a portrait quality lens, look no further. This was our second upgrade from Rebel kit lenses- the first being the 50mm f/1.8, which we also highly recommend.

We've been very impressed with the bokeh & definition. The auto-focus does take some getting used to, and it is far from perfect, but still decent.

The USM makes it seem a bit heavier, but it really makes the focusing smoother & overall the lens has a very rugged feel.

Don't let the refurbishing chase you away- ours was no different than the new ones!!

I use this lens to get shallow DOF and for this reason it works well however as far as sharpness is concerned, I do not find it any sharper than the L series zooms.

4 Stars instead of 5 for bad rating.

Very fast focus, sharp wide open. Bought used here with E+ condition but with a load of dust inside the lens. Other than the bad E+ rating, the lens delivers more than what I expected.
