I needed a wide angle that doesn't have wavy or barrel distortion, and this lens doesn't disappoint. It's extremely sharp even to the far corners. Only downside to this lens, very heavy and bulky, but you have to pay something to get something, and I'll take sharpness, clarity, and dependability any day.

Nikon's 14mm - 24mm F/2.8 ED-IF is an incredible full-frame wide-angle lens.

Whether you're shooting landscapes, cityscapes, in tight places..., this lens will help you capture images that are sharp edge to edge. For example, it allowed me to get incredibly wide, sharp shots of a 3-story aviation atrium with airplanes suspended from the ceiling.

I am an enthusiast just getting back into more serious photography. I recently bought a D-700 and needed a good lens for it. I read a boat load of reviews and looked at a boat load of pics taken with the 14-24 lens and decided it was the lens for me. I haven't had it for very long but absolutely love it. I don't have much to compare it to, but can't believe there is a lens available any more fun than this one. My next purchase will be a 24-70 and it may be more practical, but it won't be as much fun!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 14mm - 24mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide-Angle Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, U.S.A. Warranty.:

I shoot mostly portraits, advertising photography and stock images that mostly contain people and I won't even hesitate to bring this lens out. If you're careful in composing your talent away from the edges of the frame, you can create some amazing portraits that offer a lot of the surrounding environment. For shooting editorial or photojournalistic shots of people, I wouldn't leave the shoot without at least grabbing a few shots for fun with this lens.

I have also found that with the Cokin X-Pro filter series, I easily devised a way to attach the filter tray to the nose of the lens with a collar-like assembly that slips over the lens hood. Neutral density filters do not vignette at any point within the zoom range. The circular polarizer begins vignetting at around 16mm. So, it is possible to use filters with this lens, if you can think beyond the threaded type lenses we're all used to.

I do wish there was a way to protect the huge surface area of glass, as I feel a little nervous while trekking through rough terrain with it. The lens cap is awkward, doesn't easily fit in your pocket, and is large enough to use as a cereal bowl in a pinch.

Other than that, it has become one of my favorite lenses in my arsenal. Equally versatile and as useful as the 24-70mm.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 14mm - 24mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide-Angle Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, U.S.A. Warranty.:

This is one of my favorite lenses! It is my all time favorite wide angle lens. It's has to be experienced to appreciate what it can do. I have a Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S lens but I use this 14-24mm lens a lot more. I shoot a lot at 14mm and get consistently super sharp images. It's sharp from 14mm to 24mm. I am continually surprised at the images it produces. When I put the images made with this lens on a large monitor or print them I'm always blown away. Poster size images are great. No other lens inspires me like this. I use it on a D700 and D3. It's still a great lens on a DX camera but it functions as a 21mm-36mm lens in the DX format so you loose the best of it's performance potential. On an FX format camera it really shines! The 17-35mm lens may be more practical in some aspects, but the 14-24mm lens is much more fun to use and yields images not possible with other lenses. Sure it's heavy but good lenses tend to be that way. For me, the lack of being able to use a screw on filter is no show stopper in most situations. This is one of the lenses I always grab when I go out the door. I'm never disappointed with the results I get. I shoot a lot of sky and cloud images and this lens gives me awe inspiring results. Landscapes and building interiors are a strong performance points. You can shoot a lot of different subject matter in a fresh perspective and a new light with this lens and an FX format camera. It's expensive but worth every penny for me.

This may quite possibly be the best lens ever made, period. Using this lens wide open produces absolutely no ghosting and no flare, and no falloff in the corners. The feel is sturdy and very refined. Even with it's intense weight it is comfortable to shoot with all day long. While the price may be high for some, every penny you spend is well justified.

If you like shooting wide this is the lens for you. Yes it is expensive but what an amazing lens! For story telling wide angle lens are best and this lens gives great results.
I received this lens just before I went on vacation to a few National Parks. So I got to test the lens at Zion, Cedar Breaks, Bryce and the Grand Canyon. Great places to test a wide angle lens! It is extremely sharp, jumps to focus seemingly instantly, produces contrasty and color rich images. The only times this lens came off the camera was when I wanted to shoot some portraits of my friend or when I wanted to zoom in on specific landscape features. It is a heavy lens so when I hiked Angel's Landing at Zion I felt it, but I found that putting the strap over my neck and then slinging the camera behind my back worked well (after I learned not to let it bounce into my back!).
I am just loving taking photos with this lens on a full frame sensor camera! It does make me get close, and then closer, but it images it takes are well worth any adjustments to me photography style.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 14mm - 24mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide-Angle Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, U.S.A. Warranty.:

Very usable for landscapes and interiors. Has fantastic depth of field allowing both a small object to be in focus in the foreground and also have the background in sharp focus.

This lens has very solid construction and just screams quality when you look at it and when you hold it. The zoom mechanism is rock solid. I am still experimenting with what I can do with the lense but it actually seems hard to take a bad picture although you do have to watch when you have people in the photo's to not have them to close to the edge.

Only reservation is it is large and heavy so you have to make special allowances if you want to cart it along. It does not fit my current camera bag so I am looking at my options. Fortunately Nikon provides a high quality lens bag that provides more than the usual soft bag protection.

Listen up, Nikon things are suppose to get smaller NOT BIGGER. For someone who can't afford this lens I would recommend the Sigma 10-20mm is an amazing lens for around $400.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 14mm - 24mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide-Angle Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, U.S.A. Warranty.:

I originally bought this lens to take photos of remodeling work that our company does. Bathrooms in particular tend to be very tight, so I needed a wide angle lens that was sharp throughout the frame. I also wanted a fast lens so that I wouldn't have to bother with a tripod, even for interior photos.

So far this lens has been great. I'm probably in the minority since I mainly use this lens on a D40 that I got second hand (I'm cheap and would rather spend my money on good lenses than digital cameras that rapidly depreciate). Someday I hope to get a used FX Nikon, but for now the prices are too high.

I also use the lens on an F100, so I have been able to enjoy its full angle of view.

What I didn't expect was how fun this lens would be to use--it's now the lens I turn to first. I use it for everything, even family snapshots--it's wide enough to let me photography my baby while he's playing on my lap. I like getting close to my subjects and holding the camera at odd angles so this is perfect. You can hold it above your head and fire blindly, usually capturing a neat bird's eye view on the people below. This lens is too much fun to leave at home despite its size.

Since I can only attach 2 photos per review, I've chosen one that has the sun it in so you can see how the lens flares (flaring worsens as the sun moves to the edges of the frame) and an architectural photo.

This shows how the lens handles sun flares.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon 14mm - 24mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Wide-Angle Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, U.S.A. Warranty.:

First of all, this lens is probably not for you -- well, maybe a few of you. But not if you've never used wide-angles before. And I don't mean 28mm -- i mean 20mm at least. If you haven't at least tried a super wide angle lens before, use some common sense and try a demo first. The reason is that this lens, at 14mm, is mind-blowingly good -- but in a way very few people understand. "What's the point of that lens?" is the most common question people will ask you (and you'll ask it to yourself as well, as it sits in your bag, unused). I'm rating it a 4, because its not as sharp as advertised on the websites. It has decent sharpness. But the sharpness is hype. This is a quality zoom in a weird range. Maybe Kent Rockwell loves this lens -- but even he warns you to put your money into the 17-35mm instead. The 17-35mm looks nearly as good and takes filters. The 14-24 is unprotected. Its a huge bulb of bloated glass sitting out in the open that seems like it weighs more than my camera, because of how you have to hold this lens. And 24-14mm is usually not very useful, because it makes people look fat, and makes things look VERY VERY far away, unless you take the pic a foot away from them (literally). This lens is not for you, unless you know what ULTRA wideangles are, and you are ready to go to SUPER ultra wide angle. Its flawed in that it doesn't focus closer than 12 inches. If you buy it, youll know why (the fun is when things nearly touch a wideangle lens). Think twice. Then buy it, because its about the funnest and most artistic lens you can have that's not zany like a fisheye. This lens is NOT for portraits in the classical sense. Buy it only if you know you can tame it. Worse part: The lens cover is cheap plastic that does not stay on, and it constantly falls off, constantly threatening your valuable glass (and the lens doesn't take filters!). Best part: Best in its class.

[...]About the lens, as soon as I got it I unpacked it and attached it to my D3, I had been always wanting this lens but could only save now to purchase one. I started clicking immediately, and I clicked what I saw out of my office window, excellent results perfect output, in combination with my D3. What you see attached is an output straight out of my D3 jpeg with no enhancements or worked upon. I waited to make two similar clicks under varying light conditions. Clicked hand held out of my office balcony. There is distortion under low and high end of the zoom, but then that is expected of lens of such type. Surprisingly what is great is the fast focus and sharpness. Edges are more blurred. What I would have preferred a filter but it is understandable looking at the design. The near focus is pretty good but has very high edge blurring.AF-S is a great welcome and probably makes this lens much better than other Lens in the same category. However, there is no lens to replace this lens either from the competitor or Nikon, this is one great lens and does not need to come off if you do not click Zoom's. However, do excercise well to carry this around your neck because a combination of this and D3 will really need some strong neck muscles.
