I am using this lens on a DX camera (D7000). I am very impressed with its sharpness, its feel, really just about everything about the lens. It makes great pictures, even wide open. I am not so impressed with VR. I have used the VR feature a bit, and it does provide dramatically sharper pictures at lower shutters, but for all the VR II is hyped up to be, it did not live up to my expectations. I did not however purchase this lens for the VR, I purchased it because its super sharp and its a wide to mid-range zoom on my DX sensor, and it works beautifully for making beautiful pictures. It is heavy, for an F/4, so expect a lot to carry around.

Great lens for an f4, the 3 stops you get from VRII can save your shot in low light. Sharp across the frame.

IMO, the best compromise wide angle zoom for FX: takes filters, is reasonably compact, solid construction, more attractively priced than the 14-24. For my purposes, VR is a reasonable tradeoff for the 1-stop loss vs. a 2.8. Some visible distortion at 16mm, so probably not so good for architectural work.
