Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought this Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens as a walk around lens especially for hiking, whether national parks or locally. I have found the lens took very sharp photos compared with the Nikkor kit lens (18mm-105mm). I used to walk around with both a 35mm and 50mm prime switching either out as needed. I now use the zoom lens and the primes for more fixed locations.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Bought this lens as a replacement for the 18-55 kit lens, and it does the job nicely. 16mm is just wide enough that you can see the difference between it and the 18, and 85mm is enough reach for general use walking around. It's become my "normal" zoom.

There is some distortion at the wide and narrow ends, but nothing that isn't correctable in Photoshop.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I love this lens for outdoor shooting. The idea of changing lenses while on the move does not appeal to me. I also evaluated the nikkor 18-200 and I ultimately chose this lens for the wider angle and less weight and length. Very happy with sharpness outdoor and the VR is great. Indoors the aperture does not get wide enough to function well so I have a gem of a prime lens (nikkor 35 f/1.8) to complement this mid-range zoom.

Nice walk around lens. A bit wider than 18 which makes it infinitely more useful for most shooting. Excellent IQ allowing for cropping so no worries that it isn't quite as long as other all around lenses. The more I shoot the more I find myself using my 16-85 I love it!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Excellent lens for the price. Use with Nikon D300s. Had owned the 17-70mm kit lens with D70s. Professionally use for food shots used in print advertising and internet. Had been renting the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. The 16-85 is a great walkaround lens, but is also decent for the professional uses cost $1,000 less than the 14-24. Very happy with the decision to purchase this lens at less than $600 for a refurbished product.

16 to 85mm give me most of the pictures I need

distortion at 16mm appear to be like most of this kind of grand angular

While this lens is heavy, it balances very nicely on a D90. It makes one perfect ergonomic package for me with a range from 24 - 127.5, it includes my old favorites - 28 and 105, plus a bit on either end and everything in-between. The VR compensates for the slower speed. Add the 70-300 and you can do virtually anything.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I love 24-mm wide-angle lenses and, at its widest focal length (16 mm), this lens is the full-frame equivalent of a 24-mm lens. It also zooms out to 127.5-mm equivalent, which makes it good for head-and-shoulders portraits, too. The built-in vibration reduction (VR) makes it posssible to hand-hold this relatively slow lens (f3.5 to f5.6) in low-light conditions. On the whole, it's a very convenient, all-purpose lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 16mm - 85mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX ED (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a very solid lens, with excellent clarity and sharpness. Its sharp across the board. Its a very good walking around lens and a significant upgrade from any "kit" lens. I find that the extra couple of millimeters on the low side make a difference and I don't find that I require a longer lens at the other end because I have a 80-400 to complement this product.

The build quality is strong and the lens feels substantial. Again, an improvement over the plastic kit lens. I don't have any experience with the 18-200 but would think that this 16-85 simply has to be sharper overall given its shorter zoom distance. Also unlike the comments that I have read about that lens, there is no zoom creep with this lens.

It focuses very fast, and I don't find the A/M focus option of much use. Manually, the focus ring throws the entire focus distance in less than one turn of the ring.

The VR is very useful in low light conditions and does give one 3-4 f stops depending on how steady a person can hold it. It also has two VR options for various uses. The fact that its not an overly large lens helps with this.
