Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This is one superb lens! It gives a great coverage and a nice bokeh! It comes with two rings, so for the novice it will be a small thing to get used to. But great lens for any kind of occasion. It can give you tight shots and general group shots. It is heavy but very well made. It costs quite some $$ BUT it's a great lens that doesn't come off of my D300s :)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This is a lens for experienced photographers. It is a solid lens that will stand up to many years of hard use. To get the most out of it you need to learn how to use it. It is not a VR lens, so you must either use a tripod, or keep the shutter speed up. The focal range is useful on a DX camera. Expensive, but worth it if you need or want the very best mid-range zoom.

This lens has been working great on my 2nd shooters DX camera. Very sharp even at f/2.8. Works very well with Nikon flashes. For the high price I wish this lens would work on FX cameras.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

Great Lens. I am currently using it on my D90.
I absolutely love it. Sharp; Crisp; Nice Glass.

The only Con is it is a bit on the heavy side. With a flash and Battery Grip it levels it out a bit so its not so front heavy...but without those extra items, it can get a bit overwhelming.

This is not a lens to hang around your neck. You need to counterbalance it a bit to get it stable.

I would recommend picking up a nice flash and a Battery Grip if you intend to use this lens on a daily basis.

--I mainly use this for landscapes, nightclub photography and portraits.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

Maybe it's partly my fault for putting this lens on an ultra light D5000 body. As soon as I did I felt that I made a big mistake.
The lens is clearly very well made, but it is handicapped by not having VR. If it did I'm sure I would have kept it, despite the punitive price tag and burdensome weight. Believe it or not, this lens narrowly squeaks past the cheap VR kit lens in IQ.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

The lens balances a D300 pretty well. It feels backwards at first but it's because the zoom ring is pretty small.

The justification for this lens is shooting full length people shots in tight spaces. It works great for that. It feels good in your hands and focus is pretty fast.

The main drawback to this lens is the short zoom range. I could love this lens a whole lot more if it were 17-85. The 55 at the long end means you have to move a whole lot more.

No other faults I can find.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

A great lens. The weight adds to its stability.

But the focus and zoom rings are reversed and the zoom ring works backwards from every other Nikon lens I own.

So it take a bit of getting used to.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This is a great indoor lens with its f/2.8. It gives you the ability to have great shots at night (or low light) without the constant use of a flash. It also creates great, buttery bokeh. The weight is not an issue. I pair it up with a D50 and it fits like a glove.
I also use a Nikon 77mm neutral clear and the two work great together.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This lens is expensive and heavy but I am sure of my right decision this time. I wish I had recourses to buy it earlier, before I waisted my money and time with cheaper lenses - no comparison at all. Fast focus and robust, pleasantly sharp and reliable. But my only complaint is it's weight... I am not a big woman and it looks like I am still developing new muscles in my right arm and wrist -- together with D300 gives me some significant pain the day and after a photo shoot. Anyway, I would not exchange this lens for this only reason!

It really is not as sharp as I thought it would be. then again, I need to make some changes to my auto focus approach. I have been using AF-C, and Nikon recommended to me that I use AF-S. So, back to the drawing board. the lens weighs a ton on my D300, not as bad on my D40. It is built like a tank. The colors are beautiful on it.

Used this lens for the bulk of my landscape shots on a recent trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. Fantastic results. Super quick autofocus, sharp detail along the entire frame, and consistent image quality. Max 2.8 aperture means this lens is quick across the spectrum of focal lengths. The build quality is excellent - it's solid but not too heavy. Definitely a great value.

My work with my D200 and an 18-200mm lens got me a job as a photojournalist.
As a guy who gets paid to take photographs, I could now justify the cost of pro-lenses.
Let me tell you, the 17-55mm is worth it and runs rings around the 18-200 in the comparable focal lengths for sharpness, color, and speed. I haven't missed VR in the shorter focal lengths due to the faster aperture speeds.
The Nikon 70-200VR is on the way to my mailbox, and as soon as I get it, I am gifting the 18-200 to a friend.
I will run the 17-55mm on my D300, with the 70-200mm on my D200. As a former Soldier, it really isn't a problem carrying both cameras when I am used to carrying a pack, body armor, and a rifle.
This lens gets a undeserved mediocre rating on most sites. If you are shooting APS-C/DX and plan to stick with the format, get the 17-55mm. If you are shooting 35mm, Full Frame/FX, or plan on migrating to the D700/D3 in the future, make the stretch and get the 24-70mm.

I've been shooting for over 30 yrs and have never seen more crisp, clear images and with such beautiful bokeh as with the 17-55 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. Both of these lenses are incredible and I kick myself for waiting so long to buy them. I shoot weddings, portraits and special events, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on just 2 lenses until about 3 months ago when I got an extra paycheck and just decided to do it. Find the money and get this lens. You won't regret it. If you love beautiful images you have to have this lens.

Wow! Great lens. I needed something that was fast in lower light situations and with flash, and was wide enough for cramped reception halls. This lens has been it. The only thing is it's a little heavy but i'll just get in the gym for that :-) It's a very sturdy lens and since the 24-70mm is NEVER available this was a great replacement. It's sharp all the way around although you might need a little lens correction at the wide end but nothing a little lightroom can't fix. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good wide angle zoom.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This is an outstanding Nikon lens. It's extremely sharp and has an excellent close focusing ability.

Used it in Hawaii for 85% of the shots and what a great lens. Recommend that you use the lens hood all the time since the front element of the UV filter is really close to the front of the lens.

Fast focus and robust. It gets heavy after 4 hours so be sure to use a wide strap on the camera. This lens is better then my previous 24mm, 35mm and 50 mm Nikon lens. If you can afford it, buy it. Fantastic Nikon lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

Probably the first choice in a wedding lens. It is a great all purpose lens. Only cons... I always wanted something a bit longer. On a few occasions there were softness to parts of the image. A pro I worked under had the same complaint about hers as well. Not as sharp as the 28-70, but the 28-70 would be considered too long for most. Probably 4.75 stars

I Love this lens! I use It mainly with my D200 and 70-200VR for weddings and outdoor photography. Its great for portraits, group & low light shots! Its very fast and quite sharp, there is a little distortaion at 17mm but can be fixed quite easily in photoshop. Overall I am quite happy with this lens.

I shoot under a lot of lighting conditions and I found the lens to be very useful to me in just about any situation. This lens is tack sharp across the full range of zoom. I don't like light weight equipment so the weight of the lens is not problem for me.

Bought it on faith...been blessed by the visions reflected in my camera. Sharp and weighty but handier than an ax in the wilderness it photographs. The constant aperture, modest speed and zoom range keep it in the go bag. SO WHAT IF ITS HEAVY ! It's substantial. This lens is worth it. (And the workout too!)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

This is a heavy pro lens that is rugged and sealed quite well. I use it almost always wide open at f/2.8 at weddings and consistantly get tack sharp results and the colors are vibrant.

This lens is very nice for portraits at 55mm.

It is also a great lens for landscapes at 17mm. There is very little distortion at 17mm.

Strong, durable lens. I took it and a D200 to "The Subway" (from the top down). They both took a beating and performed very well. What would really set it apart from the "generic" brands and justify the price, would be vibration reduction.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

Just buy some glue and glue this lens on your Nikon or Fuji. It's that good. It stays on my camera about 90% of the time. It's range is perfect for DX size sensors, especially for portrait work and weddings. Sure if you are in the back you may want to slap on a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR but with these two top of the line lenses there's no need to carry any more. Sure it's a little on the heavy side but all good glass is. However, it really balances well on my D200 and I would highly recommend this lens to anyone wanting to upgrade to pro glass. It's super clear and produces great Bokeh. I never thought that a zoom could be this good but it really is.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

I'm one who just can't stand the cheap, plastic, sloppy controls of most low end lenses, even if I can't tell the difference opticaly. This lens is just a joy to use and handle. It is heavy, but that helps when hand holding. The zoom and focus rings work smoothly and positively with no slippage. My only wish was that it had vibration reduction like the 18-200.

I use my 17-55mm f/2.8 for about 95% of my wedding photos. It is the perfect zoom range for the formals and the reception. And it is tack sharp wide open, which is absolutely required for wedding photography. It is also rugged and well constructed to take the rigors of professional use.

Just got my new Nikon 17-55 lens. WOW! What a lens...it is so much better than the 18-70. It feels like a lens too, and it is sharp! I took a couple handheld test shots of the corner of a roof (clear sky day outside) and enlarged it in my D200 camera to take a look. Real sharp photo! I'm impressed. The optics clearly are much better.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 17mm - 55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Digital SLR Cameras, USA.:

Other than some moderate barrel distortion at the wide end (I use it a lot for buildings, urban scenes, have to correct it in Photoshop) and a little color at wide apertures, this lens seems optically almost perfect, tells me why people pay the price for pro zooms. Even illumination, tack-sharp to the corners, lightning-fast silent focus, great zoom range for the aperture. The weight and bulk makes it less suitable for casual use, travel and snapshots, but the results make you hate to leave it behind.

This is one lovely piece of glass. If you can afford it, go for it. Its 17-55mm range is not as broad as others, but the combination of f/2.8 and exceptional sharpness is worth every cent.

THE versitle lens for any DX. Lets you shoot human subjects, landscapes, interiors and wide-angle nature shots with ease and a minimum of equipment.

Zoom is smooth, quiet and no observable distortion if you stop down one from max.
