Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, U.S.A. Warranty:

Being more of a film photographer and just moving into digital full time. I am used to sharp crisp photos and digital had some getting used to. With my film camera the Nikon 105 was my favorite lens. Finding a replacement was a hard process but this lens so far seems to fit the bill. When I first tested it, it was a hazy day and I was concerned about the sharpness of the lens but when I moved indoors the sharpness was spot on! I concluded it was noise from the outdoor photo that made it look less sharp. I would highly recommend this lens, sticking with Nikon glass is a great investment for any photographer, novice to pro.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, U.S.A. Warranty:

I am very fond of this lens. It's my basic walkaround lens (i bring the camera almost everywhere I go in the bottom of the briefcase or whatever). I'm very surprised and disappointed by the negative experiences reported in other reviews but have never hit any of those issues. I've been shooting w Nikons for 40+ years and have never been disappointed in a lens. This one's no exception. I think it's one of Nikon's better kept secrets. The focal length range is perfect for walk-around purposes. I got a D40 to free up spare change for lenses and this is the one that's on the camera when I put it in the briefcase every morning. It captures 90% of the things that may pop up during the day. Pluses: very sharp throughout focal plane (even if not I tend to crop a lot). Fast focusing. Not great in low light, but then nothing w/o flash is, exc maybe the 50mm f/1.2 that I've been using on my Nikkormat since 1970 (and still use for flashfree pix in jazz clubs--the new trend in music clubs is to turn the lights down so low you can barely see your feet. Even cranking the ISO to 1600 won't do much unless you have a tripod and get real lucky, and 3200 is too grainy, for my tastes. For those purposes go to the 18mm or 50mm tehy have out now with apertures that go down to 1.4). You can go from wide angle to a real nice portrait distance with this lens very quickly.I bought it used from this vendor [...]So--if you need a quick wide-angle, or you need a standard, or you want to get that little bit of distance and/or light telephoto, this is a great lens. As I said, it's the one that lives on my camera. For really good telephota I use the 300, which is superb; for dedicated portrait's I'd probably use the low f versions of the 18mm or 50mm or (especially) 85mm fixed lenses. I'm not an employee of this store nor of Nikon, but I think this lens is so close to covering all the bases that unless I know I'm going to be out shooting it goes with me and the D40 anywhere and it's never been anything but great. I think the price point is quite appropriate too--not cheap, but I expect to have this on the camera for a long, long time.

This lens looks and feels good. The focus is fast but it is only good in the center of the image. I had to think long and hard about this lens based on one review that I read that said the left and right sides were soft. Having read about 20 other glowing reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy. BIG mistake. My testing confirmed what the one bad review had said. EXACTLY. Considering he had three of these I have to believe that there may be a design flaw. If having about 40% of your image being a little soft is okay then go for it. If not, find another lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, U.S.A. Warranty:

I purchased this camera and lens on 12-Sep-09 from [...]. I read rave reviews about this camera and It was my dream come true to own a D90. Within few days I realised that there is something wrong with the lenses. .The lens started to rattle and it started giving rattling/grinding noise while auto-focussing.Then I mailed Nikon service centre and they told me it was a issue with the Vibration reduction function and may need a repair, )(yes a 'repair' for a brand new lens, not even a replacement!!!). I sent the product to the service centre and it reached them on october 2nd. But somehow this was entered in their registry only on october 07th. Then they updated the service order number saying they need a major part replacement(Service Repair Rank B2) in the lens which will fix this issue. And it has been lying in this state for more than 3 weeks with no proper end-time for resolution. When contacted, the replies have been more blunt than encouraging. They say they are yet to receive the replacement part. I purchased this camera well ahead of thanksgiving season just because I wanted to capture the colors of Fall in my neighbourhood. But now, its almost getting over and am totally frustrated for having invested in Nikon.I was terribly dis-appointed after having spent [$] for this dream.Since this is a Kit lens, I think Nikon felt they were giving these lenses for free that they didn't care for the quality. And now their service delay is even more agonizing.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, U.S.A. Warranty:

I added this to my D90 (usually the kit lens) as a versatile 'every day' lens. It is actually quite good - sharp, good vibration reduction, nice wide angle.

My only gripe is the distortion, which depending on your zoom ranges from heavy pincushion to heavy barrel distortion. It is hard to notice in non-geometric instances, but as soon as you take a pic of something square it is quite obvious. Of course, God created photoshop for a reason, and these things can be corrected (there is also native options on my D90 that helps eliminate it). Other than that, pretty solid.

Many gripe about the plastic mount - I've been doing a lot of lens swapping, and for what it is worth I haven't seen any issues with the mount (though in all fairness, I have no idea what it will look like in 10 years).

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, U.S.A. Warranty:

I have been using this lens for about three months and I have already noticed the cheap build behind it. Although the camera can still auto-focus, the focus ring is now loose, instead of turning the ring until it stops, it just keeps twisting, and the camera is missing the focus more often now. I have been using this lens to shoot in the studio and to shoot concerts/promos, I would suggest this lens to anyone who will take this lens to a really safe location, such as a wedding or studio, but for people shooting bands during concerts (and no, I did not mosh or was in the crowd holding the camera) I would suggest looking for a tougher built lens. But if I had the choice to buy this lens again, I would, it is a very excellent piece of glass.

I've held shots from this lens next to some taken with the 18-200 VR and this is every bit as sharp. Since I already had the 70-300 VR, I went with this lens and do not regret it a bit! Versatile, super sharp, great color, and about half the cost of an 18-200. I gave it five stars because it does everything it is designed to do. Here's a couple of samples just to show color and sharpness (taken with a D60).

This is a great lens. Super sharp at all focal lengths, nice compromise between zoom range and overall weight and size.
I was not a big fan of zoom lenses but this one changed my mind.
Obviously not a good choice for available light or super fast action, but very sharp for landscapes and other outdoor shooting..
Useful close focusing, too.
Even better if you consider its reasonable price.
