Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

We purchased about 20 of these lenses for our camera systems after Nikon discontinued the excellent 28-105, which was built like Nikon lens and produced excellent images.
It was also $70 cheaper!
For the price, this lens is well below Nikon standards. It should be only sold as an Amateur lens packaged with entry level Nikon cameras.
The lens mount is an embarrassment, so weak that it causes lack of contact and error messages.
This can occur while you are zooming the lens by putting stress on the mount.
If the lens is used primarily at the middle zoom range the images are fine.
At wide angle and maximum zoom, sharpness and distortion become an issue.
We have also experienced inconsistent exposures with one (so far) of these lenses-- one half to sometimes a full stop underexposed. The lens had to be sent for repair.
I would not recommend this lens to anyone but a casual user.
I am anxiously waiting for Nikon to discontinue this lens and replace it with one worthy of their name.

From wide to tight this lens is great, sometimes I would like to reach a little further, looking at the 70-300mm vr for the longer range stuff, and the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 for fast 1:1 shooting.

Again this one is great for General all around use. I can truly shoot most of what I want with this lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Was looking to get a lens with more reach than the kit lens (18-55) that came with my D40. For bang for the buck I am very pleased. Pictures are just as sharp if not more so than the 18-55 and I have the reach that I am looking for. It is light weight and feels good on the D40 body. The only thing is that when zooming it is not as smooth as the 18-55 or the 18-200, however you get use to it.

Very pleased!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens is exactly what it sounds like: A good all-around lens. I find that it's a really good range, too. This lens is extremely sharp. It might not be perfect, especially not in some other areas, but you will be pleased with how sharp it is. I find that it does not take it's time focusing, and generally, is extremely fast. I'm not sure of how durable it is (though it seems and feels well-constructed) because I take care of my things. It's not perfect, of course. Not that great of an aperture range, but hey, this lens is just [$].I bought this lens over the 18-200 VR for a couple of reasons: less distortion, this lens is a lot faster in the AF, and it's half the price.Bottom Line: If you want a good all-around lens so you can just walk around and take pictures, this is the way to go. This one lens won't get you all of your shots, but it will get 95% of them.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is a great walking-around lens. It is very sharp, lightweight and covers a nice range, which makes it very convenient for travel photography. It is also great for somebody who's learning photography, since it's very inexpensive yet can be used for almost any shooting situation.
There's some distortion but it's nothing that Photoshop can't fix easily. Yes, it does have a plastic mount, which a lot of people complained about, but hey, it is a 350 dollar lens.
Overall I think it is a great lens for the price.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Seemed like a decent general purpose lens until "no lens attached errors" appeared. The lens construction is flimsy. There is a lot of play between the front and back of the lens and between the lens and the camera. Loose attachment to the camera causes the lens to intermittently not make electrical contact with the body, especially below 60 degrees.

This is a great all around kit lens. I've had it for nearly a year and use it more than any other lens. It's extremely sharp and has a lot of contrast. It focuses close enough to almost be a macro lens. It has a little bit of chomatic abberation that is easily cleaned up in post, mostly blue fringing. I had an 18-200 VR but prefer this lens for its eye-popping results.

This lens is very very sharp. It has some pincushion and CA but it's correctable in post. It's also extremely close focusing, not quite a macro, but close enough.

It's not a pro-build, but it's sturdy enough. Did I say it was sharp?

Nice light lens with great zoom length.....go wide at 18mm and shoot landscapes.....go 135mm and catch that eagle on the tree...in between, everything else....only thing I didn't like about it is the bokeh on some closeup flower shots....and this thing focuses at 135mm at about 10", give or take, as I actually have not measured it....but it is a really nice camera for the money....a little slow, need good light to use 135mm without blurring

All of the folks above who complain about the sharpness of the lens must spend a lot of time looking for lens problems. Sure, it isn't the sharpest, most accurate lens, but for a lightweight, affordable, and versatile lens in a kit it works great. You can hand it to anybody and they won't complain about the weight, and quickly get nice shots. In more serious use, it can get great results.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Versatile Autofocus Zoom Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I bought this as a light-weight, walk-around lens for casual use. But after about 800 shots, I have been very suprised at the quality of the images. I have compared it with the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 and it has produced images just about as sharp as these classics. I have missed the ability to shoot at low f stops but this lense is a reasonable compromise.

I haven't encountered any appreciable vignetting or CA. Distortion does not appear to be as bad as publicized. I did use it for a architectural building study and used PTlens for distortion corrections that turned out to be very minor.

The plastic mount still scares me but I must assume that Nikon knows what it is doing AND it is under warranty for 5 years!

I highly recommend this lens. I may even use it for doing some professional shoots where I am doing candids that require a big range in focal lengths so that I can avoid so many lens changes. The light weight is also very pleasant.

I've won awards for nature photography and often get industrial photo assignments as part of my public relations/marketing communications work. I was a little rough with the Nikkor 18-70mm DX zoom lens that was part of my D70 kit. I needed a replacement and was talked into getting the Nikkor 18-135mm DX that is part of the D80 kit. Very bad decision. The distortion at the high and low ends of the focal range is beyond acceptable limits. In short, the distortion is horrible. I miss the old 18-70 lens and will buy it when I get another paying photo assignment. Quality of the image takes precedence over the extra telephoto length (which is too distorted anyway).

I've had the chance to take several hundred photos with this lens so far, and I like it. It's light, sharp, fast focusing and covers a very useful range. I was able to replace two previous zooms (19-35 and 28-70) with this one, at a significant savings in weight and bulk.

There's a slight fall-off in corner brightness at the widest zoom setting, but that's pretty much universal for zooms as wide as 18mm - my 19-35 had the same thing. As a general rule it does not get in the way at all.

This lens is sharp! Great color and responsive handling. I love the range; for example, at a party you can stand against the wall and take group shots, head shots, candid shots without changing lenses or missing any of the action.
For telephoto photography outdoors a tripod is a must-have because of the relatively slow aperture, but if you provide a stable platform you are rewarded with outstandingly sharp photos at all zoom lengths.
