Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

For the price, there is nothing wrong with this lens! Sharpness is good throughout its range, and it is extremely(!) light weight. The focus, though not the fastest in the world, seems to be fairly reliable and relatively quiet.

I have noticed some chromatic aberration and distortion (especially at 18mm f/3.5), but if you are making prints where you would notice this, you probably either have software that can minimize these effects or you are using a more expensive lens. I do not like the plastic mount, nor the focusing "ring" that is the front of the lens, but then again these are design compromises that allow for the bargain basement price.

All things said and done, this is a great, lightweight normal zoom lens for non-critical use. It is obviously not a "pro" lens in build nor image quality (nor weight!), but it performs much better than its price would suggest.

Seems that if I am not in very bright light the speed is very slow. Looking for a better lens now. Good for someone starting off, but you will upgrade soon.

Upgraded to it from the 28-70 when I bought my wife the D50. Appears to be limited by the photographer only!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a good lens for everyday use, the autofocus tends to be a little slower than most lenses though. It is wide enough for general use and has decent function on my D50.

This is the kit lens that Nikon sells with the D50, a slightly newer version comes with the D40. It is the lens you want on your Camera for everyday - pick up and shoot usage. It's wide enough and you can get really close for those Macro shots.
