It's hard to knock a lens that is this inexpensive while offering so many positive attributes. Far outperforms lenses from just a few years ago, but at a fraction of the cost. I only listed slow focus as a con because it is a very slightly slower than the previous version when in VR mode, but this should be expected. When doing action photography in strong light, you probably will be working at a faster shutter speed and won't need VR for such a short lens anyway. Buy this lens, well worth it! Four and a half stars!

With this lens i can take my D80 everywhere. It has poor construction quality but the output is decent. You cant us e a lens hood either. Its not razor sharp but its enough for standart prints. VR is also very beneficial. If you want a cheap, lightweight and a decent lens with VR, buy it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Gray Market:
I bought this lens to replace the same one that broke from the D60 kit I purchased. I dropped the camera and luckily the bayonet on the lens broke and not the camera mount ring. I since have read about other people that had the lens break at the same spot because the bayonet is made of plastic.
No complaints though, I'd rather have the lens break than the camera. The lens is still a good lens, especially at the low price.

Great lens for such a great price. The plastic body is much more sturdy than anticipated.

Not a professional lens, but a good all-around performer. The only bad thing is the plastic mount system.

seems sharp enough, and the distortion isn't too bad...could focus a bit faster though.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Gray Market:
I used the lens forthe first time photographing tulips and with available light in a church. I also used it to photograph a HS graduation. I've used it on wide angle settings and on as close as 14 inches from flowers. My photos were good, and I successfully added the lense to my refurbished Nikon 40x DSLR. The lense seems well constructed, and as good as a standard kit lens. However, it is limited in that it's intended for the D40, D40x, or D60. It certainly does the job for entry level photography.
Sample photo.

I bought this lens to add to my refurbished Nikon d40x, and the combination is great. I've photographed butterflies and tulips without close-up attachments, with ease and very good results. I've also used the lens for people and portraits in combination with the SB 400 flash, and the results were, again, sharp, indeed, the results were excellent, but the lense is intended for beginners, and intermediate photographers. The Vibration Reduction feature makes most shots sharp.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Gray Market:
This is a good lens for travel. Lightweight, decent performance, VR so you can get away without carrying a tripod for general photography purposes. Very innexpensive so no great loss if it gets stolen. Recently spent a month in New Zealand with only this lens and the comparably innexpensive Nikkor 55-200mm VR and did just fine.
The only problem I've had with the lens is poor AF performance sometimes with filters attached. I use the Cokin filter system. I think there is a problem due to reflection on the back of the filter elements that confuses the AF. Others have mentioned lens flare problems but a $15 rubber hood or paying attention and shading the lens with a hat or other object can resolve this problem.
This is no pro lens but I've been pleased with it doing what I expect out of it. For the money it can't be beat.

I can't afford the $1,500 NIKON 17-55mm F2.8 lens, so I purchased this one instead. Before purchasing this lens, I borrowed one from a friend and found it useful for night photography due to its VR feature. The lens is completely plastic and feels very cheap, however I get decent photos and responsive performance from it. It is sharp and fast on my D80/D70s cameras. I highly recommend it as a backup lens. The lens makes some strange noise while focusing while the VR feature is turned on, but this does not affect performance or picture quality at all. I am happy with the purchase, If you want the same performance and picture quality then purchase the NIKON 17-55mm F2.8 for $1,500.

Read the professional reviews on all the D40 lenses available as kits to the D40. Liked this one the best. Not in Nikon USA kit though so I had to buy separately. So far very happy and satisfied, then again I don't know what I don't know so I might be missing a lot. Right now though I'm just a student of light, color and motion and wanted the most forgiving and least expensive Nikon outfit I could buy. I shopped and shopped and waited and bought. Glad I went this way. I'm already selling a few photos (CS2 didn't hurt either) and getting ready to move up to a more expensive, versatile and VR (I never leave home without it) Nikon lense. Thanks, Nikon, for making the beginning so simple!

i bought this lens to use the VR function that my 18-70 doesn't have.
the lens feels lightweight and of cheap construction but enough sharp.
autofocus is slow compared to the 18-70 and very slow compared to 50 (1.8).
however VR makes his work and helps a lot in low light.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 18mm - 55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX (VR) Vibration Reduction Wide Angle Autofocus Zoom Lens, Gray Market:
I puchased this for a D40 body I bought. I find that the autofocus is slow (~2S TO MOVE THROUGH FOCUS RANGE) My previous Pentax K100D Super ran through the focus range in ~1S. The lens does not come with a hood, and is more suseptable to flare than I think it should be. I also occasionally got some strange internal reflections, that looks like white rings when shooting at high ISO's at night with my SB400 flash. Lens cunstruction is a little cheap. Lens really needs a hood to con trol flare (not included) also the lens barrel rotates when focusing (it is not an intewrnal focus lens) so you can't use a the more effective pedal type lens hoods. It has VR, which I am still undecided how much it helps. The non-VR 18-55 kit lens is better controling flare I understand, so you may want to see what the consensus is on VR on this lens befor spending the extra bucks.
