For places you can't (or don't want to) have a flash (I bought it for museums) this is the one. About WYSIWYG for zoom with my D5000, this can turn night into day when you need it.
This is my first prime I've purchased, but not my last.
Another clue this is going to be a popular classic - they are real difficult to find one. If you see one, buy it now.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I have a "kit" 18-105 zoom and the Nikkor 70-300 zoom that I use with my D90 and D7000, and while they are convenient, they typically aren't sharp enough for me. This 35mm lens is extremely sharp. With the D7000, I am starting to prefer using this lens (or the 52mm) and then cropping using Lightroom -- "zooming in" post-capture, as it were. Also, I especially value the light weight of this lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens is great for low light photography and all types and of product photography. I have been using it for photographing products that I produce and sell on my web site. I was experimenting with some night shots of landscape lighting and was absolutely amazed at the results. This lens was sold out everywhere I checked, so I ordered (back ordered) it from Adorama.[...] Highly recommended lens and I highly recommend Adorama for any photo equipment purchases.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens is very sharp and is very fast, the optics are superb, because this is a fixed focal length i believe though, that is an issue of fixed focal length lenses. it is a light weight lens and easy to carry.

In low light situations its performance really will take your photogaphy where the iso would not get the anoyng noise.

The only thing that i don´t like about this lens is its construction, as a pro photographer one of my main concerns is the durability of my glasses, this lens has an espectacular optics inside a cheap plastic, i have used this lens for 2 years from now in a daily basis and until now no problem, but the construction of this lens make some how unconfortable at shooting in some situations, other than that the lens is a gem.

If you buy this lens you will get super great optics for less than 200.00 unbeliebable !!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

It is an excellent lens. The affordable price tag is due to the lighter material of the casing but the optic itself is top of the range. The casing has been described in a couple of reviews as being "not weather proof", so I guess it is better used in interior or outside on a clear day, although some may argue if the moisture of a rainy/foggy day can get it, it can also surely get out. (using the little white bags that suck the moisture out)[...] I would remind potential buyers that this 35mm lens is not a wide angle by any stretch of imagination. This is a DX lens therefore it is the closest equivalent to a 50-55mm FX lens. I have also read it is good at macro but it is a bit of an exaggeration. This 35mm DX is able to autofocus at very close range just like the 10.5mm Nikon fisheye does, but you have to be literally in the face of the subject in order to take a macro. Overall, The Nikon 35mm for DX camera is a versatile lens best used for portraits and low light conditions. It is sharpness will make the best out of your Nikon DX camera, especially the top of the range D90, D300s and D7000.

You will see what is different this lens with other lents if you just set the aperture 1.8 and take your pictures. It will still provide great sharpness and contrast. If you take a picture of portrait with that condition, the lens will give you amazingly beautiful bokeh. It's nearly perfect lens for most pictures.

When I got it out of the box, the aperture blades were stuck all the way shut at f/22 or so. Nikon was no help [...] Once I figured out the mechanical slide on the back of the lens and got it unstuck, it worked fine.Since then, It hasn't come off my camera, it focuses fast and the range of apertures has helped me take some great portraits, especially when I needed a fast lens to chase my toddler in lower light.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

For those (few) of you who say this incredible little lens has focus issues, I suggest you learn how to use and select your focus points. This little beauty is just what the doctor ordered for those (again...few) of us who HATE the 50mm 1.8D of yesteryear. Sure it won't do both FX and DX cameras like the 50mm does but I have no intention of going full frame. I also paid about $35 MORE for this lens than Adorama sell it for (I am overseas right now) but it is still worth every penny.
NOTE** The 50mm 1.8 is not a bad lens...it's a bad(useless) focal length on a DX camera.

Just buy the 35mm 1.8 AF-S lens if you are "thinking about it". If you want SUPERIOR sharpness compared to your kit zoom and don't mind taking the time to compose your shots without zooming...BUY IT....You'll Love It.
I'm using it on a D90.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I'm a first time DSLR buyer and picked up a Nikon d5000 about a month ago. It came with the 18-55mm kit lens and I purchased this lens as well. I probably use the 35mm 95% of the time and couldn't be happier with it. The autofocus with manual override is a FANTASTIC feature that gets used often especially in ambiguous light situations or when there are close range or multiple focus areas that could be chosen. I don't have the experience yet to comment on some of the more technical components but as a DSLR newbie I couldn't be happier with this lens (or with the camera for that matter)! Both get a two thumbs up review from me.

High aperture, low light and slow shutter speed in D90 gives amezing output... i use picasa to enhance my picture.. I am uploading some of my pics.. hope u all will like it..

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

This is my walk around lens. It's fast, focuses fast, sharp, lightweight and cheap. This lens should be in most DX Nikon camera bags. Creatively, it has a tiny depth of field at f1.8 and the smoothest bokeh ever. I wonder if I'll ever mount a zoom lens again.

Specifically bought this lens for my D90 to use at my company Christmas Party. Did not use flash all night, stopped at f1.8 to f2.8. Wide open gave good results, f2.8 gave excellent results. I got this to take pictures of my 11 month old daughter who moves quickly. Our apt has rather low light and so I wanted something quick without having to use the flash. Pictures come out just as I want. The lens gives a nice bokeh at wide app. I think I might have preferred the 50mm, but to get the AF-S one to work on my D5000 would have cost much more. Though 35mm or 50mm is likely a matter of personal preference anyhow.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

An excellent choice as an added lense to the typical (and excellent)kit lenses provided by Nikon. Don't be overly concerned about the lack of VR ( Vibration Reduction)as the added speed (larger opening) of this lense will usually mean significant increases in shutter speed, resulting in less need for VR. Quickly appreciated was the reduction in weight and bulk of my camera when compared to lugging around some of the supper zooms now available. However you will have to become the "zoomer" to frame each shot ,or use judicious cropping and enlarging to optimize some of your photos. The trade off is still in your favor when you consider this lenses cost versus its amazing speed and flexibility.
A noted shortcoming is the inability of the auto focus system to quickly refocus in low light situations. An easy fix to this minor shortcoming is to selecy manual focus and get your shot.

This lens is fast and accurate. I'll walk around with an 18-200 mounted and have this lens in my pocket for those times when I step indoors and won't use a flash. With this lens and the above VRII superzoom 99% of my on the road needs are handled. All other lenses are now reserved for specific studio use. The only negative on my copy is a loose focus ring. It does not affect performance. For the price it doesn't get much better than this for a DX camera body.

Do not hesitate if you're considering adding this lens to your collection! It's seriously a great lens for a great price! I love using it indoors...it's perfect in low-light settings. I like using it for portraits, though because it's a fixed lens, it takes some getting used to if you normally use a zoom lens. You definitely have to move around a lot more. I would give it 5 stars but the AF-S could be a bit faster... it's not insanely slow but definitely slower than I'm used to. This lens will probably stay on my camera most of the time. I really couldn't be happier with this purchase.

I bought this lens for my wife's D60 and she will never go back to the kit lenses again! Knowing hoe much I love my 50mm 1.4 AF-S on my camera, I knew she would love the ability to take shots indoors without using the nasty built-in flash! On a DX format body it gives you about the same field of view as a 50mm on FX or film, so if you only purchase ONE quality lens for your DX Nikon, this should be it!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I got this lens to take candids at Thanksgiving. I have a 50mm/f1.8 lens but found it to be too much zoom for indoor use. I also wanted a lens that would work on both my D40 and D90. Overall it meets my needs. It is a very sharp lens even at f1.8. I agree with others that the DoF when full open is not as nice as my 50mm lens. With that being said that is the only drawback I have found. However this can be overcome if you are brave enough to put your camera in manual and adjust the shutter and aperature to get the perfect exposure. Both the 35mm/f1.8 and the 50mm/f1.8 lens are really bargains for the price given the performance you get. You can get both of these lens for less than the cost of the new 50mm/f1.4.

I highly recommend this lens for anyone looking for a prime lens for indoor photography.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I purchased the lens by testing it's sharpness with my Haoda split screen & was amazed by the sharpness at F 1.8 Flawless victory on this point. (something never seen before !) But... I was expecting more shallow depth of field from this lens. The Doff is really busy at 1.8 & becomes a bit better at 2.2-2.8 but doesnt give the beautiful effect of a Sigma HSM 1.4 lens. Too much stacking effect on the circles which attracks the eye on the busy backround not on the subject. So now I hesitated to resell it, for street photography I would go more with a 28mm lens (which becomes a 42mm on APS). The only real purpose for me is to use it for nighttime Panoramic pictures... Oh yes, & too much distortion by the way. But worth [$] for who is not really picky about this. I was not but became it fast. Better go for a 50mm 1.4 lens for portraits. & a 28mm 1.8 for indoors.

I haven't had much of an apportunity to use this in a photo shoot since I've recieved it. I practiced with it some, and being that this is my first experience with a prime, there is getting used to the bokeh at different appertures. Speaking of bokeh, it's amazing! It is super quiet and so far seems to be a great addition to my equipment thus far. I haven't had any issues with vignetting, with or without the hood attatched. I'm so pleased that Nikon finally came out with this f/1.8 prime! At this point, I can't give it any cons, I've not had the chance to really test it limits and/or play with it natural light. I gave it four stars because with it being Nikon, I believe it could be a bit faster. Bottom line, you won't regret buying it at this price which might go up after a year,so get yours before it does!

Bought the new 35mm G lens to replace the old 35mm F2 AFD. This lens is great for people photography and general walk around lens. Cheap, light, quick focus and superb pictures on all APSC DSLR. If you still have yet switched to DSLR, this lens can help you do the transition.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

Mount it on your D40x and reap. Good optics at all aperatures. Allows ISO's of 100, and exposures in the 1/1000's in the same shot. Motion freezing. Stopped down to f/3.2, this lens rocks.
The only reason it does not get full points is it's relatively lightweight construction. It does sell for relatively inexpensive, so it all balances out.

This is a great normal lens. I am soooo glad Nikon finally released this version. Its perfect for indoor pictures in not so perfect lighting. I was using a 50mm f1.8, but it was a bit too tight. This lens is a much better fit, overall. Lots of uses.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I know I am going to attacked here but…I am going to review the second lens I got. The first one was DEFINITELY front focusing. Thanks to Adorama I could exchange it quickly.I am going to talk about f/1.8 because this is the only way to see the lenses real performance. This way the depth of field will not cover the errors. As I said in the title price/value this lens beats ANY other lens Nikon/Canon (maybe not pentax J). This lenses' price IS lower then it can be and I do agree that Nikon made a present to the users. But if you take this lens look at it you see nikkor! This means to me that this lens should be consistent. I understand it is [$] so it will not match the famous nikkor f/1.4 28mm (that can be bought used for 3K-4K). So yes it will be softer and slower… BUT it should be consistent! I tried mine with my d90 and my friends' with his d90 and got the same problem. On objects farther then 1.5 meter this lens perform much worse on the center focus points then on the top or bottom ones. Things get better (still not great) when you switch to spot metering but this should not happen. Metering has nothing to do with focus.Other then that this lens is sharp when it is and the focus speed is very acceptable and I think is great for [$].So unfortunately I cant give this lens 5 because it is not perfect. Nope. But this is great lens and I would buy it again hundred times without thinking.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

When I began my passion in photography 29 years ago I did so with a Nikon EM and a manual 50mm lens. This is the first time I felt a bit nostalgic in that I now have a similar field of view on my D300 with a fast lens.

The best quality of this lens is that it is very sharp at f1.8. Even better than my 50mm f1.8 and my 85mm f1.8. For street photography and isolation of subject at this field of view, I have not seen better. I also own a D40 and this is a GREAT one lens option for traveling light.

The DOF is millimeters thin at f1.8 close to the subject so it offers some very creative options with very nice bokeh.

No complaints with this lens, other than its limitation to only APS-C sensor bodies. This would be absolutely perfect if it were designed for Full Frame (Fx) bodies as it would be an interchangable low cost fast prime option for all bodies. There is one exception to this thought process, that is if you happen to own a D3x. Using this body in Dx crop mode would still provide you with around 10 megapixles to work with, which is plenty.

I use this lens to take just about everything- walk-around shots, portraits, macro, and night photography. I think it's sharper than the 50mm 1.8, and at 52mm focal length on a DX sensor, it is the perfect lens with a D40. It seems to work even better on my D80. If you are sticking with DX frames for a while, this lens is a must have. Highly recommended!!

This has been a great addition to my D40. This is a lens that should have been there since the introduction of this wonderful camera. Put it on and never take it off... zoom? what zoom? As Ernst Haas said: two steps back and look for the "a-ha". Being a prime (fixed focal length) this lens really forces you to think of composition, and it will reward you with excellent optical performance. And 1.8 aperture allows for some very creative use of Depth of Field (DoF). For D40(x)60 this is a must have!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

An excellent addition to the new line of Nikon Primes, this 35 1.8G (DX only) lens has been a welcome surprise at a bargain price. I recently purchased the 50mm 1.4G and was hesitant to purchases another prime, but was pleasantly surprised given the extra "landscape" I got with the + 15mm (this lens is ~53mm on your DX body).
Comparing the two, the autofocus is VERY FAST (slightly faster than the 50mm 1.4G), the bokeh beautiful (not perfect), and build excellent (almost as good as the 50mm 1.4G). LOVE the rubber seal and solid mesh on the metal mount when clicking it in.
Skip it if you have an FX and DX body, as the 35 f/2.0 would be wiser (and more $$).
For the D40/D60 users, this is a no-brainer, the cheapest prime that AF's on your body!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I got the 35mm yesterday and it only took me a day to realize that it blows out light. I don't know why. I reset all my settings in my D90 to make sure that I didn't have some crazy +5.0 exposure compensation, but the one I got from Adorama made almost completely white images outside in sunlight. I noticed it at first when I was trying to take shots of my plasma TV at night(don't laugh, it's a good test) and it kept blowing the picture out blue and I had to turn the EC down so low that it didn't even look that good anymore - the point here is that the 50mm 1.8 could make images off of my TV that literally looked like I was shooting high-def pictures AT THE GAME!!! I think the good old half-priced nifty fifty is the better lens and I feel so stupid for sending it back and paying all that shipping and waiting for this one and it turned out to suck. Yes, it's completely silent when focusing (a huge buying point for me over the 50mm that sounds old and winy) but something is wrong with the one I got, maybe that's the best way to say it. I should have kept the [*] 50. I guess I'll just have to break down and get the 18-200 then....oh well. :)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Wide Angle Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - U.S.A. Warranty:

I purchased the D40 for Christmas and I have been looking for a fast prime ever sence. I did a lot of research and was about to buy the 50mm AF 1.8. The only reason that I hadn't yet is becusae I was concerned about the manual focus and that a lot of my pictures would be blurry from mylack of ability. When I saw Nikon announce this lens I jumped on it. It was exactly what I had been looking for at a reasonable price.

I just got the lens last night had started playing with it some this morning. I have only taken about 25 picutes with it but the autofocus is very fast and the construction of the lens appears to be very good. The focus ring does fell a little gritty but I have read that other Nikons have the same feel. The outside of the lens matches the D40/60 body exactly as far as texture goes. It is a little bit larger diamater than the kit lens but is very comfortable and well balanced on the Camera.

For all the D40/60 owners out there looking for a fast prime for portriat and lowlight indoor pictures this lens is for you! From my initial looks at the pictures they are very sharp and have great detail. As soon as I get some pictures worth showing I will add some to the review.

This lens just came in today and boy is it inspiring! I pulled it out of the box and it had a little more heft than I expected, but it was the good weight-the kind that tells you with this burly voice, "Lets do this."The bokeh is fantastically neutral in normal use and the f1.8 really does well with those lower light engagements. For the [$], go for it. It's worth it.
