Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Of my little stable of lenses, this 50mm is my favorite for portraiture and general use. (I'm sure there are other lenses which pros prefer for portraits, but with the pro price tag attached.) It's roughly the same field of view on a DX camera as a 75mm short telephoto. I've read complaints about softness in the corners, but it sounds like these come more from FX camera owners rather than the cropped DX sensor—I've never noticed anything objectionable on either a D70 or a D300s. Personally, I think that would be a quality that makes it good for portraits where you're looking for a little softness, but that's me.

The large aperture allows excellent depth of field control as long as you're mindful of it and know what you're doing. This lens produces beautifully-blurred backgrounds that really make your subject stand out.

For the less-experienced photographer, you'll simply be astounded at the difference versus the typical f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. And it's an absolute lifesaver when you're somewhere dark and no flash is allowed. If you do any nighttime photography whatsoever, or plan on it, do yourself a favor and put this lens in your kit right now.

I used this lens almost exclusively when shooting graduation photos of my step-daughter and her boyfriend, the latter of which was very reluctant to participate (typical guy) until he saw the results. We ordered a digital album online for her graduation, incorporating all kinds of pictures, and people raved about the photos I took with this lens. My wife says the best picture of her daughter that she's ever seen was the product of my trusty 50mm.

I hesitate to say this would be my choice for the "if you could have only one lens. . ." question, but that's only because I shoot a lot of wildlife and often need the reach. Let's just say that if I could have only one prime lens, it would be either this or my 35mm f/1.8 DX. The 35mm might be a tad more versatile, but none of my other lenses, including this one, seem to produce the "wow factor" of the 50mm. For indoor photos, tight spaces, and group shots the 35mm is a better choice, but if you've got room to move, the 50mm can't be beat. I haven't tried the new AF-S model, and while it might have a leg up on features and ergonomics (the manual-focus override would be nice), it's hard to imagine it being much better optics-wise.

This lens hasn't left my camera in over a month - since I bought it. Granted, my other lens is my kit lens but I love this lens more than any other lens I've ever used.

The bokeh is perfect and the depth of field easily controlled and crisp.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is not a low light lens. Simply put it fails at producing sharp results at anything larger than f2.8 Thats bad, really bad because the cheap $100 cannon equivalent (just the f1.8 nevermind the 1.4 USM L) is razor sharp at f2.4 and costs a fraction. Even with a full frame camera, D700, I am disappointed with this lens. So are the very capable folks over at[@]This lens is still a considerable upgrade from the 50 1.8 which is soft until about f4 but come on Nikon for a premium cost you are still getting beaten by Sigma in the 50mm category? My old circa 1970's Minolta 58mm is sharper at 1.4 than this lens is at f2.4, shame, shame on you Nikon. I shoot concerts indoors and rely on a fast aperture but also a sharp product, exposure really doesn't matter if the images are fuzzy.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Great lens for low light when a flash isn't possible. It's a 75mm with crop factor on my D300. Just a little to much zoom for me for portraits but not the lens fault. I'll be getting a 35mm lens for that, not that I'm getting rid of this lens. Both lenses together are smaller than my 18-200. Focus is a little slow. Not a problem for ports. D300 active focusing keeps up very well. The biggest complaint (whine) I have Nikon is the end cap. It's a piece of soft plastic that slips on. My low end Nikon 18-200mm has a good twist on hard plastic cap as do 2 of my 3rd party lenses. I recommend adorama part # LNCRNK

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Clearly superior to the 50/1.8, this lens does exactly what it is designed for: good low light performance and spectacular image quality.Granted, the depth of field is EXTREMELY narrow in the f/1.4, f/1.6, f/1.8 range, but the newer cameras have no problem finding focus. The problem comes from any change in relation to the subject - whether closer or farther away - even the slightest shift can make a difference. But that isn't an issue with the lens itself, just getting used to extremely shallow DOF.Otherwise, its a good mid-range lens. Almost into the telephoto end with the DX crop.I noticed a pretty noticeable softening around the sides and corners with full-frame cameras... however, that really shouldn't be something that causes you to second guess a decision to buy a lens like this.In broad daylight and standard shooting in the middle of the f-stops (4, 5.6, 8) I would have to say its probably my most crystal clear lens. The resolving power and color transmission is likely the best I've ever seen in a Nikkor prime. Its almost a requirement for my bag no matter the situation.

Great, fast prime. Be mindful of the extremely narrow DoF and plane of focus when shooting wide open. (It's very easy to miss your point of focus, which is about a centimeter(!) at 3 feet.)

Plenty sharp at 2.8 and above.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

2 F stop improvement over a F2.8 lens - great for low light, night time shots. However, I learned very quickly at near dark - the lens opens up to F1.4 and of course the ISO increases to make the shot, but the DOF is very shallow. Until I figured that out, many of shots were out of focus. The D lens does not auto focus with D40, 60 etc, however with my D300 auto focus is a bit slow and slightly noisy compared to new G lens with built in motors.

I purchased this lens for low light situations where flash is not possible. So far it has delivered. With an aperature at 1.4 low light is not a probelm.

This lens will not auto focus with the D 60 camera !!!!!!!!!!! You must manually focus!!!!!
It takes good pics with the D80 when it does a/f. But with the 60 you can't really focus in low light.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I just got this about a week ago and took it out for a test run. I went to our local zoo to some very dark indoor areas to give it a shot.

My Gear:
Nikon D80
Nikkor 18-200 VR 3.5-5.6
Nikkor 50mm 1.4

This lens focuses very quickly with autofocus. With manual focus it can be a little tricky if you have the aperture wide open since things that look clear through the eyepiece end up being somewhat blurred when you see the image blown up. Autofocus seemed to not have the same problem, but due to my circumstances I did not use it at the zoo.

The lens produces very good colors and clarity. It is by far and away faster than my 18-200 in the same lighting conditions. I ran a sample test at home with normal (poor) lighting. At F4, the 50mm could take a picture at 1/5s. The 18-200 at F4 needed 1/2s. This translates to a very good ability to take pictures with low light, and a very good ability to take pictures with good DoF control.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Was in Spain traveling light last spring with D200, 18-200, and this little 50 and wound up having it save my butt when we were watching a flamenco show with great lighting but ceilings too low to bounce flash and the 18-200 had too many elements and was too slow (save for a few bumped up iso B+W images) but the 50 came through for me and now I always have at least one prime in my bag at all times

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I considered the 50mm f/1.8 for quite a while, but once I had this lens in my hands the decision was made for me. The only drawback to this lens is its plasticy feel relative to the other nikkor prime lenses. It is made in China instead of Japan. That being said, it is still better feeling than almost every zoom I've ever used and MUCH more clear. This is, hands down, the best portrait lens Nikon makes.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Compact characteristics of this lens make for easy use indoors/outdoors and during travel. The fast f1.4 apeture means you will get all of your shots in low light conditions and with the use of a Nikon Speedlight your color photographs will burst with color and clarity. This fast lens allows you to see clearly in low light to achieve fast framing of your subject. Vibrant photos are the result of this lens. The f1.4 setting allows shallow depth of field that captures you subject as the main element of your photo. Essential lens for every photographers camera whether beginner or professional.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I always carry this lens with me - regardless of what I am doing. It is the only 1.4 I own and gives me a little more light when I need it. When shooting basketball or night sports with poor lighting, I use this instead of my 85f1.8 and just crop to get the image I need. It is my primary portrait lens. For the money everyone should have one.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.4D Auto Focus AF Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I have had two incarnations of the 50mm f1.4 lens from Nikon. The first was an older AI model that I used on my Nikkormat FT3. This one I picked up when I got my D70S and have always been amazed by it's sharpness. Wide open this lens is amazing for low light. I have taken pictures by candle light hand held at a reasonable ISO. With a tripod under a full moon I have taken pictures that look like daytime at 30s exposure time and without pushing the ISO too far. The only complaint I would have about it is that it is almost too fast, I've had to use ND filters at night because it only stops down to f16.
