Bought this for my D40; the only 'concern' which is not specific to this lens is 50mm is a short tele on a cropped sensor like those on anything other than Nikon's FX range. Oh well; I have learned a lot using this lens, and have grown to appreciate its reliably accurate autofocus and the ability to grab the focus ring whenever I desire. My photos (all personal / family snaps) are only limited by my ability to see, which has improved since this is a prime. super sharp. shallow dof is incredible. i am shooting a d7000 so it makes a great 75mm portrait lens on the "cheap". shooting on f1.4 is really tough for me cause i have bad eyes. if your not dead on someone's face/eyes it shows. i love it so far.

I really like this lens because of the 1.4 F stop, it really makes taking pictures in low light situations easy. With a flash you can take great pictures in even the darkest rooms with no problem. I might get a wider angle lens for close up and indoor work but this is a great lens for everyday outside work, and you never have to worry about speed. For the money there is no other lens to get in this category.

I went to look at a D700 in a camera store and they they had this lens on it. Basically, I was sold on them as a combination. I already had a 50mm/1.8 so I didn't need a fast normal lens. This thing focuses so quickly and quietly that I was in immediate love. Highly recommended for FX or DX cameras.

I always liked the 50mm focal length results in my old film SLR, so I thought it would be a good lens to get when I got my full frame DSLR. Perfect for parties, weddings, night portraits, and surprisingly, basketball games. I always have this lens with me and put it on automatically if I know I will be working indoors or at night. The auto-focus works fast enough for basketball and I haven't noticed any unwanted blurriness. There is no Vibration Reduction, but with a 1.4 aperture, it isn't needed much.

I wanted a fast portrait lens that I can use with my Nikon D50 and which will be forward compatible when I upgrade to an FX camera in the near future. The lens worked perfectly out of the box. I obtained excellent low light photos at F1.4. The bokeh is very nice! For small room group photos on a D50 this is not the correct lens. I knew this when I purchased it. The lens is slow. If I move the camera in fast while attempting a candid shot the image will blur. Vibration Reduction would be nice. If you practice basic shooting techniques the effect is pleasing. The lens is heavy but well made with a solid feel. To protect the lens I purchased a good CPS filter. For night time exposures a tripod is a must. For the quality and the price this is a winner.

This is a great lens. It is one of Nikon's Fastest and should be in every serious photographers bag. This lens coupled with the high ISO capabilities of todays cameras almost eliminates the need for a flash at all. The autofocus is not the fastest i've used but definitely not slow. The build quality is not quite as good as the 70-200 f/2.8 or the 14-24 f/2.8 but this is still a pro-grade lens. The lens is very useable at f/1.4 but for optimum sharpness apertures from f/4-f/8 are best. This lens is also very handy for a first portrait lens on a entry level such as d40, d40x, d60, d3000, d5000. The lens itself is quite small and on the small bodies listed above makes a very light package awesome for low light. Overall a great lens either portrait for DX cameras or standard for FX cameras.

This lens produces crisp and sharp pictures, but gets a bit softer for apertures wider than f/2.5. I've not experimented the auto focus feature on this lens too much, but so far it has exceeded my expectations. And using manual focus with this lens couldn't have been easier. A very nice lens overall.

I'm an amateur and as yet have failed to devote the time or attention to learning good flash techniques... consequently I am rarely happy with the results. Thought I would try a faster lense since a lot of what I shoot is in the shade and late afternoon. My lense arrived in time to shoot my block party which went from 4 pm until well after dark. I was extremely happy with the way the lense performed. The auto focus was sharp and fast until the ambient light got very low... While the focus remained sharp it slowed a little bit. At 1.4 and 1.8, the depth of field narrowed considerable, but what a portrait lense! The subject remained bright and sharp, and though I am an amateur, I thought the bokeh excellent and not distracting. Great purchase.

This is a great lens, but it is very soft below f2.8. On my D300, I actually prefer my new 35mm f1.8. It is much sharper in the same range (wish it went down to f1.4, though).
Other than that: Using reasonable f-stops, it looks great, focuses fast, and is a good weight. It is fairly expensive, not sure if it is worth the price difference from the 50mm f1.8 version.

This is my first prime lens and I am extremely happy with it. Sharp focus, great depth of field control and color rendition. If you want to shoot in low light conditions this is a must have lens. Even a VR lens can not beat its large aperture. Even on my old digital camera focus speed is still very good.

With f/1.4 capabilities, you're going to get extremely shallow depth of field for bold portraits and easy low light candid shots without sacrificing ISO as well as closeup action shots. The rounded 9-blade diaphragm also contributes to pleasant bokeh. The M/A focus mode is a nice feature to have. This lens is well worth the investment.

This lens gives me the option of not having to bring along a flash in almost any light condition. Great focus length on an FX camera (around 75 Deg.) good for portraits of entire person. You have to get too close for a tighter face portrait, since the nose gets bigger and ears smaller in the image. For sports at night or in a gym, this makes shutter speed no longer much of an issue, though you won't be taking pictures from the far side of the court without cropping a lot.

Superb close portrait lens! Super sharp focus!
I love it! This AF-S model is the best one. It nails the focus spot right on target at f1.4 which was very challenging on the older D model.
The motor is very quiet, but not as fast if compared to other AF-S PRO models. Finally, you don’t have to keep your fingers away from the annoying focus ring like it was on the old AF-D lens. I love the instant manual focus override and I was always missing it in D model. The body of the lens looks like plastic, but well made and the quality is very high. It still has the metal mount. Beautiful bokeh, like a cream pie, 2 additional blades improved it. I would recommend this lens to every photographer.

I bought this lens as a fast lens with intended use for portraits. I decided upon this lens over the new 35mm f1.8 DX because one day I think FX sensors will eventually take over.

My wait time was 1.5 months when I ordered in late December 2008 with this new lens.

I tested it out at a Girl Scout service project where a fast construction line of girls assembling food items were coming towards me and across my field of view resulting in a challenge to the autofocus system. The system worked hard and produced a gems like the attached image where I intended to concentrate on individuals within a crowd. Many images at f/1.4 missed the focus but I wanted to look at the extreme edge of performance for this test on an action scene.

Waited about 4 weeks to get this lens and was a bit disappointed with the construction. This is the ONLY Nikon lens I have made in China(all others made in Japan)and you can feel the difference. The focus is slow and noisy compared to the D series 50mm 1.4. Operationally, it works just as good as the old but more expensive. Save a few bucks and stick with the ole school 50mm lens.

The best use for this lens is low light photography and portraiture. It has an internal focusing motor (being an AF-S lens) so it is more silent than the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D and it will autofocus on the D40, D40x and D60. If you need f/1.4 at a lower price, or for other camera bodies (D90, D300, D700, etc) get the older and perfectly great 50mm f/1.4 AF-D instead. Since it doesnt have the aperture ring, it is useless in old flim cameras, such as the Nikon FG.
The 9-bladed diaphragm gives good looking bokeh,

Focus on this lens with a D700 (FX) is fast and seems dead-on accurate. Very usable at 1.4, great at 2.0, amazing by 2.8. The lens isolates the subject from background extremely well and the bokeh is smooth and creamy. Great for portraits, carry around, general use. Colors are great. I wish it were a little smaller-lighter but this is still a lot smaller than a zoom. This is especially useful as a "grab it and maybe crop it" lens when the kids are running around the house in the typical day and evening lighting conditions. I think you will get a lot of great candid people pictures by keeping this lens on the camera than you might get otherwise. Yes there is some plastic in this, but the lens seems quite sturdy and the quality of build on the visible elements is excellent. My ability to get the pictures I want went up the day Adorama delivered this [...] lens.

This lens takes gorgeous pictures. The lens is very sharp and color vivid. Out of focus areas are soft and pleasant to the eye. The lens is professional in construction and quite heavy. The bayonet is steel, not plastic for a more secure fit. This lens will take great portraits. I am very pleased with my purchase. Nikon/Nikkor did it again! Bringing value and quality to casual users like myself. I feel I increased the value of my D40 three-fold with this purchase.

The best 50mm f/1.4 Nikon has produced, and a big improvement over the old AF-D model. Silent wave focusing is quite accurate though not particularly fast. Optically it's very useable wide open, darn near flawless by f/2.8. While the 50mm f/1.8 is still a great value, this one won't disappoint if the price is within your reach.
