Comments about Nikon Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:
I got this lens not too long ago and haven't taken a lot of pictures, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it is worth the money if you want a cheap 50mm lens with plenty of flexibility for composition. I personally love shooting minimum depth shots and have fallen in love with being able to shoot at f1.8. You should have almost no low-light problems with this lens. It is a very good fixed starter lens to help you learn with. It does feel a little cheap-ish when turning the focus, but it still performs well. It may not auto focus on most of the introductory Nikon DSLR's, but auto focus is just an excuse to be lazy. It may look like a manual lens, but you only need to adjust the focus on the lens (for introductory level DSLR's); you can change the aperture through your DSLR. I highly recommend this lens to people wishing to start taking photography to the next level and learning how to not be dependent on the camera setting everything for you which only makes your DSLR a very expensive point and shoot camera...

Do not worry about the refurbish. It is hand inspected by Nikon (vs. just regular quality control check for new lens). This is a 50mm prime, you do not need a 5 year warranty, if it works when you get it, it will work for the next 50 years (very few moving parts and very simple design). Save 25% vs. the normal retail. For the lens itself - its the nifty fifty. Everyone should have one. Cheap, lightweight, sharp, NO distortion. Put on DX camera and its a great portrait lens. Put on FX and its a great normal lens. If you have a DX and want a normal lens, buy the 35mm f/1.8. I own this as well, and it is GREAT! A little short for single person portraits, but great for walk around and group shots. The 50mm is awesome for head and bust shots (have to back up for full length or environmental shots, but if you have the space, works well for these too. I love this lens and for [$] I cannot recommend it enough!!!!Here are the only downsides to the lens:It needs a body with an internal focusing motor. This means it will NOT auto focus on D40/50/60/3000/3100/5000/5100. If you have these cameras and want auto focus 50mm, you need the 50mm 1.4G ($500 refurbished from adorama). If you don't mind manual focus, I recommend the 50mm f/1.8 E series off [...] ($30-$60 used). If you are looking for an auto focus normal lens for your DX camera, I recommend 35mm 1.8G ($260 refurbished from adorama, about $180 used from [...]). I have the 35mm 1.8DX and it is a great lens. Bottom line - 50mm 1.8 refurbished from adorama = great deal (less than a used lens from [...]). Fantastic portrait lens, great for low light and indoor photography (if you are using FX or have some room for DX) and great for detail landscapes. Very sharp when stopped down and beautiful bokeh when greater than f2.8 aperture. You can turn it around backwards for a cheap macro (no AF or metering of course), and it is really small and lightweight so it will fit in your camera bag.If you have a DX camera and have never used a fast lens or a prime, I recommend buying this lens (50mm 1.8) and the 35mm 1.8 (and 85mm 1.8 if you want telephoto and have the money) and you will be amazed at the results you will see compared to your kit lens! Zooms are convenient, but your image quality will be better if you have a prime lens and crop a little than if you always use the slow, cheap kit lens that came with you camera.

I was concerned about buying a refurbished lens, but since it was 40% less (when you include tax) compared to the local camera store I thought I would try it. I am very happy with my decision. I have been using it for over a month and it has performed perfectly. Nikon hand inspects all the refurbished lenses, so they will meet or exceed new specifications. This is a 50mm prime, the simplest lens design, so there is little that can go wrong, and a lack of a 5 year warranty is not too big of a deal.
Now about the lens itself. Its the nifty fifty. A fantastic lens and quite cheap. f1.8 gives very shallow depth of field and great low light capabilities. It is tiny compared to zoom lenses, so you can almost keep it in your pocket. It can be used on a FX sensor as a normal lens, but note that it is a 75mm equivalent on an APS-C camera (DX) (D40/50/60/70/80/90/100/200/300/3000/3100/5000/5100/7000). This makes it a great portrait lens (the bokeh is AWESOME at f2.8 and less) but be aware that it will be a little long for group shots and many general shots. I recommend buying the 35mm 1.8 dx (assuming you have a DX camera) for a fast normal lens. If you have a FX camera (700/D3/d3x/D3S) this is a great normal lens, and I recommend the 85mm f1.8 to get the closest equivalent for a portrait lens.
If you do not have this lens, buy it. The refurbished lens is exactly the same as a new lens, just cheaper (and hand inspected vs. regular quality control). I have put off buying this lens, and now I am so glad I have it. It probably will not replace your wide angle to short telephoto zoom, but it gives awesome low light and portrait results that cannot be achieved with a kit lens.
Bottom line, awesome lens, awesome price (esp. refurbished), does not take up much room, lightweight. Buy it.
One note, it will NOT autofocus on cameras without internal focus motor. Will not autofocus with D40/50/60/3000/3100/5000/5100. I recommenced the 35mm 1.8 for those cameras (I also own this lens and it is great, about $200). If you want to autofocus with a 50mm, you will need the 50mm 1.4g (about $400) which is a great lens, but a bit more expensive.

The great thing about this lens is the price. For about $100 I got everything I was looking for. Great for portraits, depth of field etc. I shoot a D60 and I wish it had auto focus, but because it was such a steal I can handle focusing myself. BUY this lens, you will not be disappointed.

Am a weekly newspaper publisher shooting lots of high school sports, theater performances, and meetings around town, etc, all that goes into a weekly paper. Have gone through Nikon D100, D200, now D300s. Bought the 50mm f/1.8 refurbished. Best lens bargain in my Nikon lens collection. Fast focus, very vivid color and clarity, nice for basketball, not so much for outdoor sports. Great for portraits. A little close up for indoor group photos but all-around one of my favorite lens. Buy one. You'll like it.

I bought my Nikon AF 50mm F1.8 refurbished and I'm glad that I did. My lens is mint/like-new/perfect. This is the sharpest lens that I own. It's one of the cheapest. If you don't have one, get one!! I sold my AF-S 35mm F1.8 in favor of this lens. I don't regret it!!!

I just bought this lens after getting a D90 refurbished body, I decided to keep it consistent and bought the refurbished 50mm 1.8D as well. I have only taken about 50 or 60 shots so far but it is so easy to use. It produces great bokeh. I figure that being a prime will make me focus on framing and learn the camera a little better before deciding which lens to purchase next.

I was a little nervous about getting a referbished lens, but I took the chance and I am glad I did. This is a great lens. The pictures it produces are sharp. I use it for full length portraits and occasional landscapes. My only complaint is it doesn't autofocus on the D40x and I didn't know that until it arrived. That isn't an issue with the lens, just my camera.
