I have used this lens for family photos and to capture product images for placement on our web site. The lens has performed well for both of these applications. As with any telephoto lens, this one works best with a tripod or steady rest. My only complaint is that it lacks macro capabilities. You must be 4-5 feet from the subject to focus. For the price this is a very, very good lens.

The lens works well for getting in close when I can't. For some reason, I get vignetting when the lens is open and zoomed close to all the way out. Maybe it's my ultraviolet filter, but I don't want to take it off.

I have no sharpness issues, and if I can get the lens stopped down, the images look fine. I have few problems with the vibration reduction.

I purchased this lens in a package deal in addition to my 18-55mm kit lens that came with my Nikon D5000. I assumed that this lens would perform decently but it surpassed my expectations. The lens produces crisp, clean images that have plenty of saturation & contrast. The only reason that this wonderful lens is not constantly attached to my camera is that I often like to get closer to my subjects, or am doing portrait shots. The reason that I do not use this lens in those situations is because it does not focus close very well(although that is to be expected from a zoom lens). Other than that this is a great lens that i would definitely buy again if it came down to it.

Day after getting this lens I went out to the local airport and started taking photos of the airplanes, got lucky and had a gorgeous warbird with an amazing, colorful paint scheme, was able to get the vibrant colors and wonderful sharpness as the plane taxied by. Great product value!!

I purchased this lens to replace a broken lens I had. I have used this lens on several occassions and have been extremely happy with it. The only con, which I have addressed as a pro, is the focus is sluggish, but quick. I have taken several photo's on auto focus where the depth of the focus missed, but this is to be expected with all autofocussing. Overall, I'm happy.

This is a great lens for the money. It has sharp focus and great optics for a lower priced lens. It produces great photos. The only minor drawback would be the plastic lens mount. But if you handle the camera by the body and not the lens it won't be a problem. I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Nice lightweight lens, but plastic mount broke on first use. I had heard they broke easy, but this must have been defective as it was just put on Camera once, and was loose from start as one of the 3 tabs fell off in the camera. Due to being a xmas gift and no packaging was retained, Adorama would not step up and replace.

Bought this lens for use on my D40. You can't go wrong for the price. I've used it sparingly but the results have been very good so far. VR is important to me due to shaky hands - (66 years young!) I also use the Nikon 18-55mmVR for a nice, lightweight travel kit.

I have been using this lens since August of 2008. I use it outside for landscapes, close-ups of vegetation, insects and wildlife. It focuses quickly. The VR is great even though I don't use it very often. Pictures are very sharp. If there's ever a problem with a shot, it's usually my fault and not the lens.

I got this lens for my D40 to complement the 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera. I use the D40 for EVERYTHING! It is my carry-along camera that I try to keep with me all the time. The 18-55mm lens didn't give me enough versatility - especially since most of my interest is nature photography. With the 55-200mm I increase my range, get fast autofocus (and the D40 requires AFS) and improve my hand-hold ability with the VR. And I discovered it works well with my teleconverter as well-- so I can increase my range further if I want to. With this lens, I have a great, compact carry-everywhere SLR. And the pictures are sharp and clear. It's a great choice for either a portable system and/or someone who can't afford the megabucks for a f2.8 big glass!!

This great lens came with the D40 and I love it. The VR does a great job and I took some incredible shots of some surfers with it, while I was sitting on the beach. The focus ring has a solid feel to it and the build quality is great.

If you're on a budget and can't afford the 18-200mm, this is the lens to get. I get sharp, consistent photos with the lens and VR is awesome.. I'd still recommend using a tripod to get tack sharp pics tho.
The only drawback is having to switch lenses if you want a wider angle.

I was initially underwhelmed by the lens' light and seemingly weak construction, so after using this on a couple of shoots I sold it and bought a different telephoto lens.

Now going over the images I took this year I found some that really stood out, with vibrant color, nice shallow depth of field, sharp focus. I checked the metadata and was shocked to see they were shot with this lens!!

I will be buying another one very soon. Just goes to show you really can't judge a lens by it's cover...

Mostly I take outdoor(waterfalls) photos, but I also have a six year old daughter so obviously I also take alot of her! This lens takes you right into the action and lets you single out what you want, especially portraits when they don't know your taking them. VR is great when it works, and can do wonders with panning. I find the VR sometimes takes time to "lock" onto the image- if it isn't ready, the image will "stutter".

This lens is light enough to carry around all day as a tourist.

While not the end-all of lenses, it is light, convenient and performs well in this price range.

This is a great lens for the beginner through enthusiast on a budget for general photography uses. I use this lens for daytime candids, wildlife, and that's it. I rarely use this lens. I was completely new to photography when I purchased this lens and didn't know the importance of the fstop. However, this lens could be great for your child's baseball games or anything during daytime.

Sometimes the autofocus acts odd when I'm zoomed in at least 135mm or so. I have to zoom out and zoom back in for the autofocus to focus.

After this purchase, I will only be buying prime lenses or a zoom with a fstop of at least 2.8.

It is great lens for capturing of any slow-moving objects. It has very good sharpness and contrast. It is good for general use, wildlife and portraits. It is less suitable for the low light conditions, but still reasonable good. It has exelent resistance to flare. Don't bother with "plastic" build quality - it isn't a hammer, but I have a lens with the similar build quality for 13 year and it is still in a good shape!

With many years of film camera experience, just recently going digital, I was dubious when I read the claim that the VR would produce sharp images at 1/15 sec. So, I had to test it. I was totally amazed and stoked. Hand-held (not braced against anything) at 200mm and 1/12 sec. the shot was incredibly sharp. With the VR turned off the same shot had the expected camera shake blur. And the lens lives up to my expectations of Nikon optical quality.

I would rate this a nine, But it is somewhat slow focus (to be somewhat expected) and it is plastic. However it appears to be well constructed. Only time will tell! From my point of view, I can honestly say: "It is a lot of Bang for your bucks"! It is the typical wonderful Nikon product which displays clarity and sharpness, no matter metal or plastic!I also own the 70-300 G but I prefer this because it has the VR feature. You simply cannot go wrong with this lens for the price.

I've replaced the standard lens on my D40X with this lens. My only problems stem from early usage without looking at the manual (it's a guy thing). Much faster than other lenses I've used and unbelievably sharp.

The auto focus isn't always a wonderful thing. Fully cranked out in telephoto, I find that that sometimes I have to switch over to manual. All said, it's a fabulous lens.

I use it for a wide variety of shots such as nature, scenic, landscapes, wild life, animals, children. Getting used to the minimum distance range was annoying but I got over that. It's an excellent all purpose lens for a reasonable price. Like anything new, it takes getting used to. I do occasionally shut off the VR at times when trying to focus on a subject surrounded by many other objects.

This is actually an endorsement of the fast service from Adorama since the lens speaks for itself. I have been a B&H guy but Adorama w/ their service and pricing has won me over, at least for now.

As for the lens, initial impressions are quite favorable to outstanding with fast focus and the VR option is.. well it speaks volumes given this extended focal length. Mounted on a D50 with a Hoya 52 mm polarizer and the normal quality filter gamit, the results have been outstanding so far, quite an accomplishment for a lens of this price. I tend to favor the wide angle line-up but I saw a need for this facal aspect so decided to take the plunge and see what all the hoop-la was for myself. So far, in my 3rd week of trial, I'm quite impressed with the sharpness, color and overall quality of this guy. Much lighter than my Tokina 12 - 24, get one, and get ready for some amazing shots. The low weight of this lens is amazing. I use it with the 18-55 lens on a D80 with a grip. These two will cover almost everything and the slow maximum opening is compensated by Auto ISO. I also use the auto predictive auto focus. I work at Pixel depth in Photo Shop and the detail is almost scary. Buy the VR it is worth it. Try to get the 18-55 VR too. This is a quality product.
The front element is exposed so get a 52mm (yea) UV filter.

Wanted a General Purpose lens that could be used for indoor sports - High School Wrestling. Even though only a f4 it does a great job pared with a D80 shooting iso 3200...no you can't print a 16x20 but you can get high qualty 4x6 and some 8x10 while stopping the action.

I have used Minolta and Canon film SlR Camera's for years. Just swapped over to the digital world. Since having this len's for a short time I havn't really found all of the quirks yet. But from past experiance I can't say that I have ever had any brand of lens at this price that could equal the quality in the photos taken. For a lens that is not macro it will still give very nice results with acceptable sharpness. The photo of one of my little buddies is from the lens closest range. Sharp enough to count hairs!

Excellent versatile mid to short tele with great VR. Unfortunately the lens has a flimsy looking plastic mount, and makes a high pitched screech when focusing. Still at this price the lens is incredibly hard to beat. Overall, great buy.

This is the perfect 2nd lens for anyone with a D40 and the 18-55 kit lens that came with it. The two lenses give the casual shooter all the range that he or she may need.
The lens feels a little cheap but it can endure a lot of beating. I carry the lens with me daily to my high school and it has been knocked hard quite a few times, but it keeps on ticking

If you are deciding between this lens and the non vr version, I cannot urge you strongly enough to choose this lens. The VR is incredibly helpful when you need to use lower shutter speeds. When handholding a camera (not using a tripod) the "rule" is that the shutter should be at least the reciprocal of your focal length. This means that at a 200mm focal length, you should use at least a 1/200 of a second shutter speed. With VR I can take sharp shots using 1/15 of a second. That is more than a 3 stop slower shutter speed, just as advertised.

As great as this lens is, however, it isn't perfect. The lens has a lot of trouble focusing in low light situations. If you hate using the AF assist light as much as I do then don't expect to use autofocus at any nightclubs, or after dusk. I would be fine manually focusing, but the focusing ring is extremely sensitive so action shots are near impossible (for me at least)

This is a great lens. As long as you understand and work around its limitations, you will not be dissapointed.

I picked up this lens right before a trip to Hawaii to compliment the 18-55 kit lens that came with my d40. Getting this lens turned out to be a great decision. The reach was awesome and the photos came out great. The VR worked great at an after dinner show I went to where no flash photography was allowed. It also worked really well when photographing some of the wildlife that resides on the grounds of the hotel I was staying at.

I have loved photography ever since I was a teenager playing with my dad's 35mm Nikkormat. I started the digital arena with an Olympus C-3020 and just recently opted for a faster "power on to first photo" time and a SLR format. I chose the D50 for options and pricepoint. The kit lens, 18-55mm, with the D50 is very nice, but lacked the zoom that I desired. About the time I started looking, the 55-200mm VR was released.

I was very impressed upon opening the box. The focuser, when in manual mode, does not rotate the filter threads and does not move in and out while focusing (unlike the kit lens). Although it is a little sensitive, I would still call it friendly.

Upon first powering it up, turning on the VR, and looking through the viewfinder, I could see the image in the viewfinder lag slightly as the lens tried to compensate for my motion.

Unfortunately my first VR shots were worse than hand holding, which started a panic. But after reading the instruction sheet I found that I was engaging the shutter too quickly.

All in all I find the VR to be useful in some situations and not in others. As with all new equipment it will take some time to "get into the groove" and know when to use it and when to not.

For only about $[...] more than a regular 55-200mm zoom, you get a VR lens that will make your tripod obsolete. Also, an excellent value alternative to that hard to get Nikon 18-200mm VR zoom lens($825). If you already have that excellent 18-55mm Nikkor kit lens, this will do the job at the fraction of the cost. Get one soon and enjoy!

Got the lens and have used it for a weekend, and have been nothing but impressed. If your camera has an 18-55mm kit lens this is a great way to expand your kit.
