Amazing piece of glass! I use this lens for sports, low light, portraits etc. The auto focus is lightning quick and super accurate. Sharpest lens I've ever owned. The price is scary but once you get over that, you'll vever be sorry.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
Worth the price! I use this lens indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions. It's sharp at f/2.8 and a wide range of aperatures. That translates to better images in all kinds of lighting conditions. Hard to take a bad image with this lens. I've used it in the rain quite a bit with no ill effects. Weather resistance seems good. The Vibration Reduction works well for moving and stable shots. I like how easy it is to get a really sharp image with this lens. Effortless! I read how good this lens was and finally purchased it. I was imediately surprised how good this lens was. Much better than any other zoom I have used and as sharp or sharper than many primes. It quickly became one of my favorite lenses. Build quality is excellent. Focus has been consistently razor sharp. The only downside is the weight and size, but the laws of physics seem to dictate this at the present level of technology! It's worth hauling around for the high level of performance it provides!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
Yes, it's a boatload of dollars, and yes it has tremendous focus "breathing" -- but I wouldn't be without this lens. The bokeh is creamy as can be, the sharpness wide open defies logic, and the auto focus is fast and accurate.
I use it for nature photography, weddings, sports, and just about anywhere a fast long lens could be useful. With a Nikon TC-17E II it actually does most of my flower "macro" photography. I've use it on a D80, D200, and D7000 that I own or have owned and it was perfect on all of them.
The stabilizer is good and I often shoot it down at 1/60 second at 200mm and still get a high percentage of good shots handheld. Zoom is extremely smooth. At large apertures, this lens has the best bokeh of virtually any lens I've owned. Totally creamy.
The build it top notch. I've shot it with both my D200 and D7000 in the rain with no difficulty (except for constantly wiping off the filter, lol). It focuses down to less than 5 feet which is quite useful. If you're shooting sports the focus limiter is useful because it's easy to get focus hunt in the midst of the action. The limiter ensures that you can hunt quickly instead of spooling through unnecessary close focus.
It has two disadvantages: 1) It's heavy and shooting it for long periods at weddings is work after 3 or 4 hours. 2) The focus breathing drops the effective focal length to about 135mm at 200mm zoom when focused close. Only as you approach infinity is it truly a 200mm zoom.
The focus breathing is the "deal killer" for some, but the incredible sharpness, build and accuracy of the lens redeem it for someone like me.
Except for the focus breathing I recommend this lens. Bottom line: if should the unthinkable happen, I will buy the exact same lens as a replacement. It has won me over completely.
Lens used with a TC-17E II as a "surrogate macro"

Bought for a Birding Photo Safari to Costa Rica. The weight did not prove to be a problem kept mounted on the tripod and carried it ready to shoot. Easy to use controls, easily accessible. The zoom with no external length change is GREAT...no noticeable change in the center of gravity during zoom make it a snap to find the subject and zoom in for the shot and the f2.8 allowed some great fairly low light shots.

I traded-in my 300mm f4 and 80-200 f2.8, which I used for outdoor sports photography (kid's baseball), for this lens. I'm extremely satisfied with this single lens - less stuff to carry around and I have everything I need with this single lens. Two things to describe this lens - it focuses fast and gives sharper result.

I purchased this lens after learning that getting the best saves you upgrading all the time! What an amazing lens, so sharp, nice weight and brilliant auto-focus. My main photography is around travel, sports and landscapes. I use this lens mostly for sports but am hoping to try it for weddings as well. I use the Nikon D700, so with the battery pack (MB-D10) I am able to capture great action sequences. Also, the battery pack gives the camera and lens good balance.

I use this lens for a variety of assignments. I am a freelance photojournalist and I also shoot weddings, portraits and other PR related events. The best use for this lens is noticeable in low light situations. Night high school football traditionally has the worst lighting of any sport event. I have had trouble with other brands with the same lens when it comes to auto focus in low light. This lens is perfect! The AF is extremely fast and I've been extremely impressed by its performance. The lens does not hunt and it's not terribly heavy. Of course the weight might be different for you because I can hand hold a 400mm f/2.8 lens without a monopod if needed. About the only con that I can think of is the high price. I hope my lens lasts for at least a decade so I can get some of my money back.

Initially I said can't be worth the extra money. If not for the $400 Nikon rebate when purchased with a D700 I probably would have passed since I had the VRI model. After using it for a few weeks I have to reconsider my original thoughts. Coatings, nice. Focus, lightning fast and crisp but the big differnce is this....
VRII is for real. I can handhold this beast at 1/13 and get crisp shots. For a late 50's shooter that's amazing.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
I'll leave the technical accolades to those more qualified to make them. My comments concern the durability of this lens. I had this lens attached to my D700, hanging from the strap on my shoulder (I know, I know...lesson learned), with my hands full of other gear. The camera was at about waist height. The strap broke and the lens/camera hit the concrete sidewalk with a solid thud and the sound of breaking glass. Without looking at it I picked the camera up, noticing broken glass on the sidewalk. Knowing my $2000+ lens was ruined (& likely the camera as well) & sick to my stomach I didn't look at it for about 30 minutes. When I did, I noticed that the broken glass was from the filter I had on the lens. The filter ring was bent a bit & stuck on the lens threads. When I turned the camera on it fired up just fine and, much to my surprise, the lens operated perfectly. There was a slight scratch on the lens but other than that, and not being able to remove the filter ring, everything worked properly. I sent the lens and camera off to Nikon to check them out and remove the filter ring. They removed the ring, cleaned the sensor & responded that there was nothing wrong with either the camera or the lens. What would have decimated a less expensive setup had virtually no impact on this lens. You definitely get what you pay for and, after this incident, I'll not hesitate to pay top dollar for Nikon gear.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
This is my main portrait lens. I shoot this lens as much as I can wide open so I need the sharpness quality at F2.8 as well as great stabilization at lower shutter speeds. This lens has not let me down. Dislike the heavy weight, but that also re-assures me that it was built solid. The only major CON is the high price tag. But that also tells me that there was alot put into the construction of this lens to justify the costs.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
Really expensive, but amazingly high quality lens. Paired with the D300s, the new 70-200mm VRII achieves some stunning results. Focus is very fast and spot on. I didn't notice any harsh aberrations in high contrast situations. The VRII allowed me to get useable images at as slow as 1/6 of a second, sitting down, but still hand held. Just control your breathing!
I love the removable tripod mount. I'm able to connect a California Sunbounce Sun-Sniper straight to the bottom of the lens and carry my camera around for hours without even noticing it's there. This is a heavy lens though, and I recommend a padded strap for prolonged usage.
One thing I might change on the lens is the hood. It seems a little small and dainty on the end of such a honkin lens.
Super Sharp at f/2.8

If you own a full frame Nikon, this is a must have. It is very expensive but glass like this last a lifetime. Well controlled light fall off, distortion at all focal lenghts and aperatures. VR II works as promised, I have wonderful photographs at shutters as low as 1/60s at 200mm! My lens just recently took a tumble in the car when I got in an auto accident and the lens survived without any problems; nikon service pronounced it good. Only the (very cheapish) lens hood broke. I wished it was a stronger grade plastic but that is what most likely absorbed the impact vs sending the shock straight through the lens.
Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
I use this as a general purpose lens, for people pictures, sports action shots. It is heavy but fantastic. Bokeh is great at f2.8, perhaps 135 DC may surpass it (or 50mm 1.4), but the three are different kind of lenses.
Focus is tack sharp, accurate and consistent. I was thinking of buying a 200mm f 2.0, but eventually bought this and am very glad I did, as I doubt any lens surpasses the quality of this lens.
I also thought about a used one, but found little price difference between new and used, and bought an out of box lens, and could not be happier.
I have shot this lens in daylight and pictures are fantastic. I have yet to use this past f4 or f5.6. mostly using for softball!!
Yes, I would buy this again. I baby my lenses and am very glad I did not buy a used copy.

No complaints here. Very expensive & I can't justify it since I'm just a hobbyist but it's a wonderful lens. Excellent VR. The enclosed frame is one of the first test shots, quite dark, 20 mins or so after sundown, hand held f2.8 @ 1/10. Escape pod washed up on the beach last year illuminated with vehicle headlights. Venus in the top right is still pretty sharp at 1/10 hand held.

I obtained this sweet piece of glass when Nikon package dealed it with the 300s, and after 600 exposures I couldn't be happier. This thing is sharp, even wide open and all the way to the corners. The bokeh is nice and creamy, and with the 51 point AF on the 300s this thing tracks moving objects like a radar! What is so nice is being able to shoot @ 100 ISO and use shutter speeds like 1/2500 and above. This thing sucks in light and because of that the dust is gathering on my speedlights. The clarity and sharpness is incredible.
This is my first "professional" Nikon lens and now I know what I have been missing. Worth every penny!

This was an upgrade to my 80-200 f2.8 Silent wave lens from several years back. I was skeptical that the lens could be as good as reviewers had stated, especially since I already had an older f2.8 zoom which I loved. The main difference is the VRII which is significantly better than the original VR. Together with the reformulated lens and special glass, this lens has to be leader in its class across the major brands. I noticed the greatest improvement while shooting indoor low light sporting events like my kid's soccer and basketball games. Nikon has really come out with a winner! For those not sure about making the upgrade, for me it was worth every penny.

Any internet complaints about this lens are ridiculous. If I were forced to only have one lens --it would be this one!
It works great on full-frame and half-frame cameras. Nikon has proven themselves again as a leader in lens QUALITY!

I shoot some kid's sports, using the 70-200/2.8 AFS on a D90. [...]My favorite lens just got better. At fast shutter speeds, in AF-C mode, I get a higher percentage of sharp shots than before, now better that 9 out of 10. In low light conditions, I get about 1 and 1/2 stops lower shutter speed capability for the same percentage of sharp shots. I have managed some 1/8 second captures, and get more than half sharp at 1/15. The Bokeh of the MkII is just as sweet as the lens it replaces.I don't know how Nikor did it, but the MkII is even better.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
After using this lens now for almost 2 months, I am very pleased with the purchase. I was contemplating purchasing the VRI when this lens was announced, and I am glad I waited. This lens has exceeded my expectations. Sharpness is exceptional, compared to the previous model. Auto-focus is very fast. Low light capability is excellent. The quality and sharpness of the images is great, even at f 2.8. Zoom and focus rings are smooth and work flawlessly. The vibration reduction is one stop better than the older version. It also works flawlessly.
There may be a downside for some with this lens. At close distances, the effective focal length range contracts, effectively becoming a 65-135mm lens at a distance of 5 feet. After reading other reviews, a few owners of the previous lens were not happy that the new lens didn't have quite the zoom capacity as the old one. If you do most of your shooting at less than 15 feet and need to get a full 200mm out of it - you may want to reconsider. Again, even at 5 feet it is still 135mm. This is not a problem at longer distances. At infinity, you get the full range that you expect at each setting. It only gives wider views than expected at closer distances. I am primarily a landscape photographer (as many of us are) and this has no effect on my subject matter. It shouldn't be an issue for those using this lens for sports photography either. If you use this lens only for portraits, it may be an issue for you. With anything, there are trade-offs. You will have to make the choice based on what your subject matter is.
The Nikon engineers did a great job with the redesign of this lens, increasing edge sharpness and ability to focus at a closer distance. The Nano lens coating does a great job of reducing ghosting and lens flare as well. Bokeh is wonderful. This lens is the final chapter to Nikon's "Dream Team" of the pro f 2.8 zoom lenses, along with the 14-24 and the 24-70.
Sure, this lens is expensive. And a bit heavy. But quality isn't cheap, and good lenses aren't light. The final image is worth it. Bottom line - if you can afford it, get it. You won't be disappointed.
PS - If you use filters for front element protection or otherwise, use the best. No sense in spending all your hard earned cash on a great lens and degrading image quality with a cheap filter.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
There are no substitutes!!! This is a fast, solid, well-built lens. I haven't compared a full range of images through its focal length under various fstops but the sample images I've captured so far are sharp. I have yet to experimenting with the VRII features but so far it has allowed me to hand hold the camera at 2 stops below normal without evident camera shake. Perfect mate for the D700's high ISO feature. Although more expensive than the 1st generation, I am very happy with the purchase!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II Zoom-Nikkor ED-IF Lens - Black Finish - 5 Year Nikon U.S.A. Warranty:
This lens will be used for wedding work and low light situations. This lens, like the model before it, was made for pro work and provides spectacular sharpness. The new VR II provides amazing sharpness at incredibly low shutter speeds in hand held shooting situations. I'm very pleased with the lens and it was worth the hard earned savings.

Only used it for a couple of shoots thus far, but the ease of use and quality of photos is immediately evident. Great match with my D300.

I got my lens just a few days after it was released to the distributors. I started this photography hobby in June of this year and quickly got drawn into this lens. I wanted to get its previous version but since the announcement of this VR II came in July, I waited. It is worth the wait and the extra cost, even though as a non-professional, I don't think I can justify the expense. However, I have it anyway, just because I don't want to miss out on what such a great lens can do (thanks for a lot of positive reviews on the previous version).
I use this lens on the D300 and it works perfectly (I have to remember that the D300 have 1.5x zoom factor). It is a bit heavy on the D300 body. I don't have the FX body to try the lens on so I don't know how it feels on the full frame body.
It is very fast with more controls such as Normal/Active for VR. I haven't used it extensively outdoors but it works great for indoor portraits and in church settings. I don't need to use a tripod and still have excellent images.

I just received this lens a couple of days ago so I haven't been able to test it extensively, but so far the results far exceeds the previous version of this lens. I still feel that the Image Quality of the original VR lens is outstanding and it should be considered in your decision making. The VR II is a definite improvement. I have been able to shoot at 1/20 shutter speed without any visible motion blur. I am planning on shooting more weddings and events. The VR II on the new lens will provide me the results I've been trying to get in low lighting. There is almost no visible vignetting and the corners of the images remain relatively sharp. The down side as many will state is the weight and the price. [...]
