Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I am a former professional photographer who now has the luxury of having photography as a hobby. I can no longer justify, nor do I have the need for the fast and rugged equipment I used as a professional. This midrange Nikon lens fulfills all of my requirements at a very reasonable price. It is precise and quick in focussing, the VR function performs as represented. The lens is of moderate weight and sturdy enough for serious hobby usage. I have no unfulfilled uses for this lens. It is a solid compliment to my D7000.

I like to shoot wildlife/birds and for a long time I've wanted a lens like this because the 55-200mm, although a wonderful lens, just doesn't reach out the way this 70-300mm does. This lens brings subjects right up close and it's lighter weight than I expected it to be. Love it!

Particularly at the refurb price, the 70-300/4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR works very well as a sports lens, for someone who cannot justify the alternative investment, the pro-level 70-200/2.8 G AF-S VR, plus a 1.4 or 1.7X Nikkor teleconverter. This lens is also lighter and shorter. Coupling the 70-300 to a D7000 should effectively makes this lens even "faster," due to the newer body's improved high-ISO performance. Sample shots of cycle racing, using the older D300 body, can be seen at:[@]

My wife is a biologist avid wildlife photographer. I purchased this lens so that I could join her on her expeditions an have something to do while she takes the real photographs. While it's not quite as sharp as her top of the line Canon lenses, it's incredibly good particularly considering the price. Also, other than the packaging, I wouldn't know that this lens was refurbished. Overall, except for the very most demanding photographers, this lens makes a great addition to anyone's Nikon kit.

This lens is one of the best bargains at full price. It's even better at the refurbished price! This is a great walking around lens when you don't want to carry a lot of gear or a bulky bag. Traveling light! I love taking this lens mounted on my D700 to the zoo, or anywhere else me and the kid are mooch'in around. With all the sun hear in Texas, I don't really ever worry about the lack of light. The VR is an added bonus given the f-stop range. And did I say it's sharp!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

This is a very good quality "kit" lens that is well constructed and durable. I link it with a Nikon D7000 for shooting outdoors sport photos - mostly soccer - in fairly good light. This includes overcast to sunny days. The lens is stable and does not creep. Lens quality is less than prime lenses such as the 70-200 or 80-200 f2.8 (Nikon or Sigma) that can shoot faster and in much less light, although the price of those lenses are 3-4 times higher and the weight far greater. That said, I get sharp images at maximum length when used in sports mode, even at lower ISOs. The VR is good, and I don't use a monopod, even for distant shots. It's a nice lens when used as intended, and at much less weight than prime lenses, but don't expect it to shoot in low light such as indoor gyms unless there is good fluorescent/halogen lighting, or unless you plan to post-process by adding exposure.

I have used Nikon lenses and cameras as both a professional and amateur for decades. This lens is a solid lens with very good performance for the serious amateur. It would be fine for occasional use by a professional, but is probably not rugged enough for heavy usage. i'm using it with a D7000 and it has met or exceeded all of my expectations. It is a great value for the price.

This was a good purchase for the money. The higher lenses are way out of my reach financially so I thought I'd try this one. I purchased mainly for wildlife photography and it does the job quite well. I can't afford the crazy prices for the higher zoom lenses that I would love to try but this one will do! I can't tell it is refurbished either so I feel I got my money's worth on that score too.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

The Nikon 70-300 ED-IF AF-S VR, which I bought as a refurb, makes a fine outdoor sports lens for the more casual, occasional DX user, covering a 35 mm effective focal length range of 105 to 450 mm. With the high quality today of higher ISO settings, for outdoor work a far more expensive 70-200/2.8 zoom or 300/2.8 lens simply is not necessary. I have used the 70-300 for a recent "criterium" bicycle race, and it works fine, as long as one understands how to set the auto-focus system, i.e., AF-C, and moving the initial sensor around to best fit the flow of action. I use the lens on a D300 body, but most these days would select the D7000 as the best match, and with that body, even some indoor work might be feasible, using the ISO 3200 setting. The 70-300 unlike the 18-200 does not suffer from "zoom creep," a major advantage. With the lens at the shortest position, it is longer than the 18-200, but this won't be a problem most of the time. Of course, the 70-300 does need to be coupled with one shorter lens, but for outdoor work, even the kit 18-55 VR would suffice.

I bought this lense to replace a Tamron 70-300 mm non VR model that is not the same quality as the Nikon. It will add reach to my lense arsenal plus VR to compensate for handheld photography. The best part was the good price, since it was refurbed while carrying 90 day Nikon warranty.

Used it recently to capture some shots of the Moon & Supermoon in March 2011. The one thing I noticed is that it may hunt sometimes when using autofocus. I will put up with that issue considering what I saved on this lense.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

It's all about the pictures, and that's where this lens shines.

I have had mine for about a month and use it with a Nikon D3100. For closer shots I use the Nikon 18-55 kit lens. For more reach I looked at the Nikon 55-200 and its new 55-300 but came back to this one, particularly with the Adorama price for the refurbished unit.

I find the speed of the auto focusing to be quite good for the way I use the lens (mostly landscapes, portraits, family gatherings, nature). Occasionally it hunts for a second or two but that has not cost me any good shots. The lens is a little heavy compared to the kit lens and camera, but it is manageable and has not been a problem. I have not experienced any problem with lens creep.

The pictures are very clear and sharp, which is what I want from a lens. Color replication is outstanding. With its weight I have to say that you really appreciate the excellent VR system; without it I think you would probably have to use a tripod for most shooting. Bokeh is very good. Some reviews have said this lens is not great in low light, but I find that bumping up the ISO, say to 800 or so, solves that issue pretty well with no noticeable (at least to me) noise.

I would say that the only negative, and it is minor, is the weight of the lens. It is heavy to carry around all day, but that is easily offset by the excellent quality of the pictures and the extra reach in the 200-300 range compared to the Nikon 55-200. If good picture quality is what you want, this is the lens to use.

Ken Rockwell's revue, combined with the availability of this lens at the refurbished price, convinced me to make the purchase. However, based on what my experience has been with this lens, I would strongly recommend it new even at its full price.

I am very pleased with the lens and recommend it without any hesitation.

The copy that I recieved looked new, I couldn't tell it had ever been used. Condition aside, the lens performs in line with most reviews out there, very sharp from 70mm-200mm, less so from 200mm-300mm. But it's still definately usable on the long end. And it's a good thing the VR works well, because f/5.6 at 300mm is challenging unless there is a LOT of light! So as long as it's a clear, sunny day, it's as good as anything out there!

Bought this lens on a budget to chase random wildlife.(Mainly birding) Couldn't be happier with the results. Focus is a little slow sometimes, easily remedied by switching to manual.Have also got some great bokeh with the bugs.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Initially I was a bit skeptical about buying refurbished goods especially with electronic items. But after reading through some of the reviews in this very same website and the fact that it is refurbished by Nikon with 3 months warranty I realized that it's one of the best deals. So, I took the plunge and I'm totally happy with this purchase.

I've been playing around with this lens for more than a week now and I'm very impressed with the results so far. The Auto focus is snap on, very fast and accurate. The VR works excellent and of course the pictures are very sharp. I also have the 18-105 VR and compared few pictures. I could see the difference though not to a great extent.

The Tamron 70-300 VC also seems to have a good fan following these days and I did consider it too but the refurbished price offered by Adorama for this lens is a much better deal IMO.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I purchased the Nikon refurb from Adorama at the end of February and took it with me to Florida in early March to shoot some baseball spring training action. I also own the pro Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, but I didn't want to carry the extra weight. I was able to get to 300mm without having to use a teleconverter on my 70-200, which again was a weight and space-saver. The lens focused quickly in bright sunlight and the focus kept up with the action on 5fps burst shots with my D300.
When I reviewed the images on my computer, I was very pleased with the focus accuracy and overall resolution. The VR allowed me to shoot at ISO 400 at 1/250 and above to stop action cold.
The build is not "pro", but it's much better than other lenses in this class. I'd have no problem using this lens for client pictures.
If you want excellent results and need to travel light, pair this lens with a Nikon 16-85 and you'll be able to cover 90% of your photo requirements.
The only weakness of the 70-300 is low light shooting. It's a bit difficult to achieve fast focus when the lens is at f/5.6. If you're a big fan of bokah, use the 70-200 f/2.8 instead.
This lens is a real keeper for me!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

We got this one primarily for the reach - esp. wildlife, soccer games, and dance competitions. I recently shot a dance competition with this lens and got very usable images on our D7000 at 1600 ISO wide open at full 300mm. That seemed to me to be about the outer limit in low light. We don't own the fast 200mm, but I imagine that I understand the benefit of that lens better now - I assume the 2.8 aperture would support a lower ISO, but then you sacrifice some reach (and your left arm to afford the lens to begin with). It's always about the trade offs, isn't it? Anyway, it's a great lens, especially for the price. Autofocus is fast and accurate, zoom is smooth, and the build is excellent. Our refurb unit was factory perfect with no issues at all. Excellent product, excellent price, [...]

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I bought this lens refurbished because it was such a great value ([$] at the time). I hesitated a bit because of the limited 90 day warranty, but I figured that's enough time to see if there are any problems. At first I thought the lens was a bit heavy to be used with a D60, but I am getting used to it and think it is still reasonable weight for the performance. The auto focus works well. I like that there is the manual override without having to activate a switch, which is one of the reasons I like this lens over the newer DX55-300 lens. I'm using the lens to take bird photos, nature shots, landscape. The bokeh is great. This lens is a great step up from the 55-200VR lens that I bought along with my D60.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I'm an old guy with 11 fixed length Nikkor AI lenses from the 70's and 80's but I have a new D700. I tried zooms in the 80's and said "never again." But after reading reviews I took a chance on this lens and I am stunned at how good it is for what I do -- daylight landscape photography. I have had it out in the field about 10 times in the last two months and have shot about 1,000 frames with it. Since I shoot in daylight F8 is fine and gives excellent sharpness edge to edge. I have not noticed any ghosting even with a filter and shooting near the sun. VR is incredible. On the occassions I have come up on gators or beautiful blue herons and didn't have time to set up a tripod the vr is a miracle -- great sharpness hand held at 300mm. Amazing. I am still too attached to my tripod to leave it home however, but I have eliminated my 200, 135, 105, and 85 from my camera vest. Having said all that, it is important to note that this is not a pro lens and has a lot of plastic in it. It is nowhere as solid at my 36 year old 200 which was a pre-ai and then converted. If I use the 70-300 as much as I used the 200 and with the same level of banging around I tend to do, I doubt it will last as long -- then again I don't expect to be around another 36 years! (But alas, the way Nikon continues to re-create and improve their products, this lens will be "obsolete" long before it is worn out.) Life hurries on...

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I already own a Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF (the much cheaper, non-VR version). I wanted VR and better IQ but didn't want to buy a new one. adorama.com happened to have a refurbished one, so I bought it. Overall I am happy with my copy. Throughout the 70-220 range, this lens is much much better - very sharp and crisp pics. The VR works as advertised.

I gave this 4-star only because of softness at 300mm. I already knew this going in but was still disappointed because my non-VR version has better IQ/sharpness at 300mm.

This lens has been great for photographing surf, suffers, and birds. Love the clear, crisp images that it gives me and the extra weight is worth it for the durability and Compatability with FX for a potential camera upgrade. Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Although i've sold this in favour of more zoom (80-400 VR), i was very pleased with the results.

Its light enough to shoot all day, and while the focus is fast for a consumer grade lens, its not going to blow you away if you use pro gear. Still, at the long end of the zoom (which is why you buy this lens), even fast moving objects are not changing a large % difference in distance (does that make sense?), so focus is more than fast enough. For example, photographing a jet, or race car. They may be moving fast, but at 300mm, they are also far away.

VR is also a must unless you will shoot ONLY in full sunlight.

Bottom line: Unless you NEED 400mm (i do), this lens is an ideal tele zoom.
Who is it for: Consumers/prosumers. What about pros? If you shoot for a living you won't make your decisions based on my review :)

This was my choice for my first non kit lens. I went back and looked at the photos I enjoyed taking and where I was frustrated by my current lenses and despite my original thinking that I needed a fast primary found that the VR with more reach than my 55-200mm was really what I needed. It is a tremendous help shooting in lousy light (like a riding stable) and subjects that are always in motion. Priced considerably below the big fast teles, the flexibility of the zoom, the reach and the VR make this a really nice lens to have in the arsenal.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Very heavy use. VR helps when hand-held. I use with monopod most often

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

Bought this lens refurbished so it was a very reasonable price. Vibration reduction has been a real blessing, and the 4+ zoom range is great. This replaced a 70 to 210 and I am very happy.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I purchased this lens for one reason alone: to get me closer. It does just that.

I was very impressed - I have a d40x and this lens works great with it. What a difference this made over the stock 70-200mm kit lens that came with the camera kit. Quick to focus, tends to go a little darker with shadows, but playing around with it more will tell me the limitations. If you're in doubt.. get it - its a good one! I was a bit concerned about the refurbished part, but no problems so far! the weight takes some getting used to. I purchased the d40x because it was a lighter set up, but this lens does add weight. But it's worth it!!!!!

Very disappointed with this product. I bought it used and found the auto focus was ineffective and most often didn't work as expected. Resorted to manual focus only after many wasted shots and time. Even distance shots at near infinity, the lens couldn't figure it out. Was only good at distances of less than 100 ft.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Zoom Nikkor Lens - Refurbished by Nikon U.S.A.:

I upgraded from the 70-300 ED (non-VR) version. Image quality is about the same, but the VR is really nice to have. I use this as my travel telephoto zoom. Not the same image quality as my 300 f4, but certainly easy to carry. I also like to use it at about 105mm (on my D700) for portraits.

Sometimes I forget to turn off VR on the tripod (or back on without the tripod). Otherwise, nothing negative about it.
