Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

I use this lens for weddings, b'nei mitzvah's and other events. This lens has a quick zoom, and quick focus. I love to shoot candids, and this lens allows me to capture the action without having to be a part of it. I purchased this lens used--which is the only way I would buy gray market photo equipment. I went to Adorama to purchase the newest Nikon 70-200mm lens, but it was cost prohibitive. This lens does the job really well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

I have used this lens for over two years now and the image quality is consistently 100% professional.
However, watch out for the manual focus ring slipping as mine and those of many owners no longer work. I think that Nikon should recall these lenses and fix the problem for free. It is a stupid problem to have on a pro quality lens. I can only use AF with the glass. Keep saving and buy the latest 70-200 2.8 VR, but only after it has been widely tested.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

This lens is for heavy use where you don't want to worry about focusing, bad weather, fragility, optical quality for a given aperture, etc. You just shoot, and get results. Simple as that.
The f/2.8 aperture is not really for gaining a stop or 2 in low light. It's really for getting great bokeh from 70 to 200mm. I use this aperture most of the time and it's really what allows you to isolate your subject.
Last but not least, this lens is much cheaper than its sucessive AFS 70-200 replacements. Get it while you can !

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

This ultra sharp lens has been mounted on either my Nikon D700 or D2x bodies and have consistently performed remarkably well in many difficult photo shootouts. Though most users would feel confident to 'hand hold' this gorgeous lens, I always have a monopod handy in case light conditions change dramatically. It takes sometime to get used to its weight but for me, such 'heaviness' offers just the right counterbalance to make a steady shot. I remember when I first mounted this lens on my D700, I felt that sense of inner joy and pride that I have in my hands the two best product Nikon has ever produced. This classic Nikkor f/2.8 telephoto has surpassed expectations and managed to deliver sharp, high quality images that surprised VR lens owners. The awesome D700 with this 80-200mm lens is the closest thing to Perfection!!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

I'ved used this lens for 2 years now. Has never let me down. Focus is incredibly fast on the D200 & D2x, Ya a bit on the heavy side , but when it comes to quality, you get what you pay for. Dollar for dollar , pound for pound , this lens is one of the best if not thee best bargin on the market. I use this lens for outdoor portrait work. Sport & action. This lens does have a tendenecy to flare ( or ghost ) when aimed in the same direction as the sun. But that has more to do with the size of the glass elements used. Definately use the hood when shooting outdoors.
2.8 can be a bit soft, but if you stop down to f4 the images are incrediably crisp. I also do mostly manual focusing , this preserves the camera battery life. ( takes a lot of juice to work the AF motors when they have to move large chunks of glass )

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

This lens is just awesome in it's own right. All those things you've ever read about getting the best lens you can and wait for the body, well it's all true and this is the lens to prove it. It's actually a bargain at the price and now discontinued so get it. Why pay almost double for VR on this type of lens? It can't help you if you're photographing you're kids in low light or just about anything else that moves.

With pro glass on it, my D300 is shooting great pictures up to ISO2000. It's amazing how the quality of the grain improves so dramatically with this lens, there just aren't all those stray light beams and no weird colours in it. Having stayed away from high ISO, I learned today that I need not!

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

This lens is big and heavy. It is very serious looking piece of equipment. Built quality is very impressive. Simply put, they don’t make lenses like this one any more.
For shooting action monopod is a must. Shooting wide open could be a bit challenging.
Lens case is totally useless. Lens with filter attached doesn’t fit in it.
I would recommend buying it while you still can.

I love this lens! I had a cheap 70-300 "G" series lens. I was attempting to shoot night football and failing miserably. This lens made a huge difference. It focusses quickly on my D100. I guess the price is the only negative, but once you see the shots from it, you know why it's expensive. I have also used this lens to shoot indoor high school basketball from the stands and it works great for that too. It is heavy, but for the shots I get, I don't care!

One of the most useful and versatile lenses for available light concert shots. Use a tripod.

Watch out for the A-M focus switch ring. They are plastic and tend to crack (its only a minor problem). Mine cracked so I have a rubber band on and it works fine....

A good alternative to the pricey 70-200 f/2.8 VR.
This fast lens is easy to hand hold. Focusing is sharp and fast (especially when using the full/limiting focus switch).

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

This lens is solidly built, AF is in fact very fast (D80 and D200) if you know how to use it properly i.e use the focus limit switch, the handling is great esp the grips on the crinkle finish, the sharpness is also unquestionable.

Use it for many occasions and photo shoots, and there was once I met a Nikon guy that uses the same lens 80-200mm AFD F2.8 but envied those that use 70-200mm F2.8 AFS VR, then when he saw their photos vs his/mine, he was shocked to find that 80-200mm is equally sharp and contrasty. The key is that you have to get a good monopod, I got Gitzo 5540 model and you can shoot at 1/40-1/60s as sharp as AFS VR model. By doing so, you have the Monopod "VR".

And even if you have spent on the 80-200mm & a Gitzo monopod, you still have change for a prime lens 35mm F2? or 50mm F1.4? or 85mm F1.8? and a couple of memory cards.

If you think this lens is not a bargain, think twice, and think again as you won't get this deal when Nikon discontinues this lens. And when Nikon discontinued this lens, you can still sell it at a very good price in the used market and with the money, you can buy the 70-200mm :)

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens - Gray Market:

One word - WOW!. I have other plastic zooms for film and they work ok, but NOTHING I have used before is as fast, versatile, crisp, color rich and solidly built as this beauty. Yes, it is heaver than the $300 lenses, but it's built to last and balances perfectly with my D70s with a monopod or by hand. By the way you can use this lens for digital and film. Autofocus is extremely fast and you would truly be amazed with the shutter speeds in low light and real fast shutters for shooting from an airplane. The most significant feature - f/2.8 through the entire zoom range (great depth of field control). Put down of all the other 80-200 cheapies, dig a little deeper in the wallet and you'll never regret it. We only go through life once - grab all the light and stop all the action you can!

This F2.8 lens 80 to 200 proves to be a great lens. I recently took it on a family vacation to Disney in Orlando. I took pictures of fire works, the castle, and rides. Also some night shots of buildings with ambient light. Its large aperture makes this possible. This is one of my favorite lenses for just about anything outdoors. It is fast enough to freeze action at sporting events. Also I use a tube extender with it to take macro shots of insects and flowers. And the resists are great
