Its the heaviest in the bag, strong construction and super sharp. Very happy with this lens and I'll take the weight for the quality anytime. Its definitely a pro class lens and one needs to practice with it some to get used to the torque delivered during focusing

I wish I would've bought some close-up filters for this lens along with the lens itself...I traded up from a Nikon 105mm macro, and while I appreciate the extra reach of the 200 mm lens, I miss the old lens' macro capabilities.

This is a great lens,[...]. The optics are very similar but the VR is quieter (focusing motor) and noticeably faster. Is it worth the extra $1000, probably not for most ... but I don't regret upgrading.

I bought this lens knowing that reviews said it was slow to focus and might fight for focus. That happens occasionally, but not often.

I recently took shots at a rodeo where the action is fast, pretty far off and over quickly. The lens performed flawlessly on my D300. The continuous focus and release functions worked very well and we were able to get a lot of wonderful shots which we have published in our blog. I would highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Bracket & Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

Have been very pleased with the images from this lens on a full frame D700. It isn't a light lens, but I purposely buy equipment that is durable and can take abuse. I am quite confident that this lens will be able to take whatever punishment is dished out. I purchased this lens fairly recently, after waiting for the release of the 70-200 VRII lens. I hear about the need to redesign lenses for the larger sensor, but have been perfectly happy with the quality of my shoots. I primarily shoot architectural images for my records and clients.

I am disappointed with the trend on newer "G" lens designs to abandon the aperture ring. I still love my F3 and film as a medium and don't want to spend a lot of money on a lens that will not work on older film cameras.

The only issue that I have with the lens is that it can take a long time to cycle through the focus ring if the subject has not been acquired or was lost. For sports, I will prefocus and then try not to miss when I ready the camera for the shot.

In all a very solid and quality lens

I've used this lens for quite a bit of sports photography and the the results are excellent. Great in low light. I only wish the current Nikon teleconverters were compatible. I think this is a great, high performing telephoto lens for the serious hobbyist however if I were a pro I would go for the more expensive 70-200 2.8 lens.

I use this mainly for portraits, action photography, aviation photos - planes taking off and landing. Great under low light. Rugged and solidly built will take a lot of abuse. I chose this over the AF-S version because it is backwards compatible with my Nikon FE2 and FM2 film cameras. This is a great lens if you don't mind the extra weight compared to the AF-S model.

All the good things you heard about this lens are true. I bought a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens in January, and used it for a few months. I didn't like the color fringing and the loss of sharpness after zooming past 200mm. I had a 1.4X Tamron pro teleconverter that was sitting in my camera bag and decided to put it to work. I ordered a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 D ED lens from Adorama. [...]. By using the Tamron Teleconverter and the Nikon 80-200mm lens I now have a very good 280mm lens that out performs the Nikon 70-300mm VR. Yes...it is very heavy, but its a small price to pay for the outstanding results you get. I have two examples that is posted with my review. The small bird is a photo that is cropped to half size. Even at this smaller size notice the detail in the claws and in the eyes, and this with a Tamron teleconverter. The second is an flying model airplane moving at a fast speed. I had no trouble keeping the plane in focus as it flashed by. This lens is a tribute to Nikon. A fast focusing, super sharp lens that is affordable for most photographers.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Bracket & Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This is the best fast tele-zoom you can buy for under $1K - period. My first Nikon was a used Nikormatt FTN with a 50mm f/1.4 non-AI lens I bought off an AP photograher in Vietnam in 1967. Yep, I still have the 50mm lens, had it AI-d and use it sometimes on my D200. But this 80-200mm f/2.8 has replaced several manual-focus lenses for me, from a 105mm f/2.5 through my beloved 180mm f/2.8 ED. It's solidly built, easy to zoom, very sharp, has great contrast with only a little falloff at the corners, virtually no distortion, and it focuses reasonably fast. Be sure to put a high-quality multi-coated filter on it (eg., a Nikon L37c) to keep it ghost-free. I also use a cheap 77mm foldable rubber hood on the front end, mostly to protect the lens from banging. Yes, this lens can get heavy, but I find the extra mass makes it easier to hold steady even down to 1/30th of a second - things this heavy don't wiggle much! With my Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AF, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF, this 80-200mm f/2.8 AF and my D200, I'm all set for most photo opportunites from grandchildren to weddings to wildlife. I also carry an old TC-201 to make this lens into a 160-400mm f/5.6 MF super tele-zoom if needed for critter pix, but you need a monopod or sturdy fence post with that setup. Just buy this lens, use it and enjoy it. Lenses like this are the difference between snapshots and real photographs.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Bracket & Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

This lens is solidly built, AF is in fact very fast (D80 and D200) if you know how to use it properly i.e use the focus limit switch, the handling is great esp the grips on the crinkle finish, the sharpness is also unquestionable.

Use it for many occasions and photo shoots, and there was once I met a Nikon guy that uses the same lens 80-200mm AFD F2.8 but envied those that use 70-200mm F2.8 AFS VR, then when he saw their photos vs his/mine, he was shocked to find that 80-200mm is equally sharp and contrasty. The key is that you have to get a good monopod, I got Gitzo 5540 model and you can shoot at 1/40-1/60s as sharp as AFS VR model. By doing so, you have the Monopod "VR".

And even if you have spent on the 80-200mm & a Gitzo monopod, you still have change for a prime lens 35mm F2? or 50mm F1.4? or 85mm F1.8? and a couple of memory cards.

If you think this lens is not a bargain, think twice, and think again as you won't get this deal when Nikon discontinues this lens. And when Nikon discontinued this lens, you can still sell it at a very good price in the used market and with the money, you can buy the 70-200mm :)

Fast lens with superior build quality and optics. This lens is rather heavy for just walking-around, but the zoom speed is quite good on a D70, and images are very clear with excellent color and contrast. Bokeh is also outstanding. An excellent investment that will last a lifetime with proper care.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Bracket & Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

One word - WOW!. I have other plastic zooms for film and they work ok, but NOTHING I have used before is as fast, versatile, crisp, color rich and solidly built as this beauty. Yes, it is heaver than the $300 lenses, but it's built to last and balances perfectly with my D70s with a monopod or by hand. By the way you can use this lens for digital and film. Autofocus is extremely fast and you would truly be amazed with the shutter speeds in low light and real fast shutters for shooting from an airplane. The most significant feature - f/2.8 through the entire zoom range (great depth of field control). Put down of all the other 80-200 cheapies, dig a little deeper in the wallet and you'll never regret it. We only go through life once - grab all the light and stop all the action you can!

The lens met all my expectations, and has allowed me to take action shots of swim meets in a dark swimming pool building and interesting shots of high school and middle school concerts and plays, all without disturbing the timing system or the audience. It also has given me some great shots of big horn sheep near Yellowstone Park as will as some family pictures.

This F2.8 lens 80 to 200 proves to be a great lens. I recently took it on a family vacation to Disney in Orlando. I took pictures of fire works, the castle, and rides. Also some night shots of buildings with ambient light. Its large aperture makes this possible. This is one of my favorite lenses for just about anything outdoors. It is fast enough to freeze action at sporting events. Also I use a tube extender with it to take macro shots of insects and flowers. And the resists are great
