Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.4D IF AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

after months of deciding on which lens I would get "next" - I finally concluded the 85 1.4 would be the perfect choice, and I sure was right.....there are enough reviews about this lens for you to make your own decision about it, but let me say, YES - there is a difference between 1.8 and 1.4 - and if seeing is believing, you need to get one ASAP.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.4D IF AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I love prime lenses and this one is no exception. Shooting wide open on a D700 or D3s opens up a lot of possibilities in low light. Reasonably sharp stopped down a bit, and really sharp at F8 - 11; focal length is nice for candid portraits and general walk-around use, although it's tough to beat the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 in that department. My only issue was that my copy had a front focusing problem. Used LensAlign to calibrate and made a +10 adjustment on the AF Fine Tune; it is spot on now and has incredible focus wide open. I may send it in someday before my warranty expires, but the AF Fine Tune did the trick. I have to admit that having to tune a lens of this price is a bit dissapointing, but from what I understand, professionals do it all the time (or keep exchanging copies until they find one that works well with their camera, which is a practice I don't necessarily agree with). Overall, besides the front focusing issue with my copy, I really like this lens.

Performance doesn't match hype
By JackaroooVerified Purchaser from Anapolis, MD on 10/20/2009

Cons:
Blurry Focus, Slow Focus

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.4D IF AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I bought the lens because it's fast. Turns out mine is very soft when wide open and the autofocus is easily mislead by the thin DOF. It takes a lot of practice to get consistantly usable portraits even when focusing manually.

This lens is legitimately one of Nikon/Nikkor's best ever. Its a good focal length on DX or FX sensors. Tack sharp; it doesn't get any better than this. If you're interested in this focal length then buy it. Absolutely amazing for portrait work.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.4D IF AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

I had this lens for 9 months before I sold it. For the last 2 months I had it along with the Zeiss ZF85/1.4.

The Zeiss has better corner-to-corner sharpness, contrast and color rendition, is better built.
The Nikon 85/1.4 is one of the better lenses in the Nikon line up, has nice bokeh - but no better than the Zeiss. Wide open it is soft, especially pronounced in the corners.

If you can live without AF, get the ZF.
Nevertheless, the Nikon 85/1.4 is a great lens.

Excellent for use indoors, particularly when using a flash could be a distraction. I do a number of “event” type functions involving animals (cats) and the speed of this lens allows me to not use a flash and yet still capture excellent shots without setting the animals (or people) off. Fantastically sharp, with wonderful bokeh - an all around terrific lens that I would highly recommend to anyone.

Comments about Nikon Nikon 85mm f/1.4D IF AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens with Hood - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty:

The first Nikon 85mm f/1.4D I received was fuzzy from f/1.4 through f/2.8. Since this is exactly where I intended to use the lens--wide open with minimal or no flash--it was returned in ten days. I also called Nikon. Ed, Nikon's representative, said to return it because no Nikon lens should be this way; something is wrong with the lens. It is Nikon's problem to repair the lens. If yours is not sharp from 1.4 up, send it back! [...] will stand behind it; (and I'm sure Nikon will, too.) The second f/1.4D lens [...] sent me is right on: Very sharp at 1.4 and up; Fast (if I forget to turn the flash on, the shots without flash turn out terrific also); Focus is fast enough for middle school boys and girls basketball games (its main use); Exposure is right on. I use ISO 200 film in a F100 body at 1/200 or 1/250 second on manual with lens wide open and fill flash. It handles well and is well balanced. My other basketball lens is a Nikon 135mm f/2.0D. It also is fast, accurate focus, accurate exposure, and very sharp from 2.0 up. I can shoot from the stands and the end of the court with the 135mm and at the end of the court with the 85mm. It is a tossup which I like better; both are needed; both are superb! (I've had the 135 for 2.5 years; the second 85 for 3 weeks.) I also did a head to head comparison of the 85mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 in the same gym with the same people on the same day with two different games. I had 5 out of 30 throw aways with the 1.8 and only one throw away out of 30 with the 1.4. The focus ring on the f/1.8 rotates with the autofocus; this is a real negative feature as the shots change rapidly from vertical to horizontal and back to vertical. I also did extensive resolution tests with these and my other lenses. I was looking for a lens of the same quality as my 135. It has been found. [...]

Wow - the bokeh on this lens is incredible. I had read descriptions to this effect but it is very difficult to describe. Suffice it to say that the outdoor portraits that I have shot since last November with the D1X and the 85 f1.4 have been stunning. This lens really excels on an overcast day or at twilight.
