I bought this lens and found that the focus, AF and manual were not accurate. I thought maybe I bought a defective lens so I returned it and exchanged it with another. SAME PROBLEM! I returned this second lens and I've decided to go with the more expensive 85 1.4

I wanted a fast, sharp, "affordable" lens with nice creamy bokeh. This lens exceeds my expectations. It is accepatably sharp wide open and fully sharp at f2.0. Bokeh is better than I expected, which was very important to me. Unlike some people I don't mind a bit of noise from AF, I have other screw drive lenses, though the AF is not one of the fastest. A great performer, well worth the money and so lightweight.

Excellent lens for low light, portraits, and good light weight walk around short telephoto lens. Good solid construction and fast autofocus. Lens is very sharp at f4 and beyond. A bit soft at f1.8

I searched the internet on various sites for months for a lens I could use for my Nikon D70s and within my price range (~$500 US). I selected the Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Telephoto Nikkor Lens and it has been great decision. With this lens, the detail is excellent and I have been able to capture great action shots. Now you will need to be close to the ice to capture great pixs as it is not a long telephoto lens. I am thrilled with this lens and have no regrets with buying it. It is amazing how sharp this lens is wide open. This allows for low light photos at f1.8 without a loss of sharpness. On my D90, this lens provides the same magnification as a 127.5mm on a 35mm camera. The combination of high speed, sharpness at all f-stops, and significant "reach" makes this one of my favorite Nikkors.

Definitely a portrait lens, but great for low light with a variety of subjects. Great compliment to the 50mm f/1.4.

Bought this lens specifically for high school indoor sports photography, namely Wrestling and Basketball. The lens is fast enough to shoot at high shutter speed at medium ISO.

Recently used this lens in an indoor sports arena. I really was impressed with its speed and sharpness of my images. A bit soft around corners at low end, but overall would use this lens again and again. Seemed to really get the action shot.

Just got this great lens & I love it!!! I shoot a lot of high school sports in dark,dingy gyms and this lens works out great.
Close to the net shots at Volleyball are tack sharp with just the right amount of bokeh.

Excellent quality lens. I like the lens best for portrait work on my F100 camera. On my D200 the lens is a 127.5 mm equivalent and works great for head/shoulder shots.

Easy choice - if you have a grand burning a hole in your pocket, get the 1.4. Otherwise, get this lens and never look back. It is my main lens for concert photography and basketball. If the light is really bad, you will wish you had the 1.4 but otherwise, this thing rocks. I use it for portraits as well but there are lots of lenses that will do for that. Being in the photog pit at a concert with no flash allowed and only two songs to get your shots - this is THE lens. Buy one - you won't regret it.

I love this lens. I've used it on a film SLR and now use it on my digital Nikon D200. It doesn't disappoint. The autofocus is instant, and very clear. Images show fine detail. The lens is fast, so shutter speed tends to be as well, giving more consecutive frames per second. I take indoor shots with this lens in existing light and have never had to use fill in or flash. It's so lightweight and so fast that I can hand hold shots at 1/15th with no blur. For the price, this lens can't be beat. I use it for just about anything, but it's best for portraits, getting in close, and low light situations. If you're into wedding or group shots, or walking around NYC, this lens won't do it. You'll need a wide angle. Otherwise, a fabulous, high quality lens.
