Received the lens for Christmas, but I got to pick it out. Found it on Sale and bought the 'kit' fpr added savings. Intent was for wildlife at longer range. Had a chance to use it at Balboa Park in San Diego. Using an E520 got some great long range shots went on to get flowers in 'stand-off' macro mode. Not a pro, but like what I see. Can print everything at 8.5 by 11 with no loss due to lens.

I really enjoy using this lens with my e-620. Pictures are sharp and clear. This lens could compete with much more expensive lens' with no effort.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
Great lens for the money. One needs to get familiar with this lens, it isn't fast but increase ISO to compensate. Also has good macro capability. Some indicate the lens is somewhat soft, I don't find this so, probably depends on camera setup to a degree. While not being fast, when used within its limitations it is a good performer. The range make it very useful for wildlife and some sports situations, outdoors. A versatile lens for sure.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I bought this lens several years ago and have not been disappointed in it at all. Take your time to get to know it and you will love it as well. With my E520 or my E500, it works well with both and is consistent. I have gotten some fantastic shots with it. BTW, I have bought a lot of stuff from Adorama and so far have never been disappointed with them.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
Great for stationary wildlife in good lighting conditions.
Bad for birds on the wing or on busy backgrounds.
The autofocus is slow and touchy (on an E-620), hunting through the entire range when focus can't be immediately obtained. The electronic manual focus system has been difficult for me to adapt to, but when I can get focus correct, the photos have been turning out very nicely.
Well worth the price for such a long lens, but it takes a lot of work to get high quality images.
Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
Much better than I anticipated, expecting something like used the Canon 55-250. The build is solid, range is impressive and AF is accurate and comparable to the 55-250 on a Canon 40D.
I use this with an Olympus E-620 for a good, cheap zoom package for the zoo and birds
Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
has macro capabilities but no where in the instructions does it tell you how to use this function. Works as advertised focus is fine in daylight, have not used it in low light conditions. very satisfied overall, nice sharp pictures better than the two lenses in the kit

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
This is a great camera for the price. Works very well in daylight, but is limited in the evening given that it is a f4-5.6. Great night shots can be taken with the use of a tripod. I tested it at a forest preserve and got some great nature shots. The zoom is great, you can almost use it as a macro. I would definitely recommend this if you do not want to drop a thousand dollars for a high end zoom lens.
Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I have one of these and just bought one as a gift. For the money, it's a great addition to the bag and useful for a bunch of different things, but I'm partial to wildlife and sports work for the kids. If you're not looking to go for the faster glass and still want solid output, this is definitely the way to go!

I have used nikons for years but am sold on the new olympus digital. The design of the lens, is amazing. This lens is half the size of my nikon 300mm and has twice the zoom. I could not be any happier.

I use this lens a lot for birding in my backyard. It produces a clean crisp picture with a really nice bokeh. It isn't a heavy lens either, and matched up with one of the newer Olympus model cameras, this lens is real fun to use producing excellent images.

Best used on a tripod for long range wildlife. Works fine when mounted to a guided telescope for night views of the sky with long exposures. Manual focus is sharp. Also great for young child portraits at a distant. Adorama is a very good store to buy from

I bought this to take indoor, low light photos from a distance. Great value. Easy to use and understand. Would love lower f-stop, but that would cost so much more.
Happy with the purchase.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
My first impression of this lens was its size and weight; it is big. At about 1.4 lbs it outweighs my E510 camera body and at 3.5" wide and almost 6" long with a filter it takes a lot of room in the camera bag. There is only one reason to get this lens and that is for its extended zoom range, about twice that of the 40 – 150 mm kit lens. In 35 mm equivalents this lens zooms from 140 – 600 mm. It is an ideal lens for outdoor wildlife photography. However, like all "long" lenses this is a large and heavy piece of equipment and is difficult to tote on hikes. Also, like all "long" lenses, this lens requires more thought when using than shorter lenses. Whereas image stabilization helps to minimize blurring as a result of shake, it is still best to set the camera on shutter priority and dial in a speed of at least 1/500th of a second. Then adjust the ISO and aperture as appropriate. It is better to have some noise from a high ISO or softness from a wide open aperture then have to deal with blur from shake. My E510 seems to be aware when this long lens is used and increases the speed a little, but not nearly enough to compensate for the length of the lens.
I've only taken about 100 pictures with the lens and so far I have been very please with the results. As expected, it is very good at distance shots. What I hadn't expected is that it is also good at close-ups from a distance. I took a picture of a large bee on a flower from about 7' away and the flower and pattern on the bee's wings were crystal clear. The depth of field, as expected, was very narrow. As several other reviewers have pointed out this is not a very fast lens. It rapidly stops down from f4 to f5.6 when you zoom. Hence, my comment that the lens is best used for outdoor photography, especially in full sunlight where f5.6 is not a problem. Given the limitations noted above, I strongly recommend this lens. However, if you are a novice, to get the best results, be prepared to use settings other than AUTO and to learn something about the camera. If you are a hiker and want the capability of a long lens I would seriously consider a superzoom camera (they are about the same price as this lens). The quality may not be as good, but they are much easier to lug around.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I use the lens for figures shots-Bathing suit etc. and sports (fast moving people, horses, hounds.)Too slow for most artificial light sports but is plenty for daylight. I find models like the distance to subject the lens provides, and it is plenty sharp for most all requirements IF you use a tripod! Because of its light weight, there isn't enough inertia to overcome human shake. Having a 600mm lens is a great thing for action and the focus is quick.
Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I have had this lens for nearly a year and generally use it for wildlife, close up and landscape photography. I have taken some great wildlife shots with it. My only complaint is the slow focus especially in a dark or low contrast area. When I go out for a shoot, I generally keep this lens on my camera in order to be ready for wildlife.

Generally, it works far better with my E-520 with Image Stabilisationthan than with my E-500 Great for portraits, kids'activities, wildlife. My favorite and standard setup is: Aperture-priority mode, ISO 400, spot focus, Image Stabilisation (1), playing with aperture to get the sufficient speed to freeze the action. This lens is top notch. It gives great results. I'm really pleased with it. [...]

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I found the lens excellent in use with my Olympus E-510 using image stabilization and hand held in lower level daylight and essential in early twilight. Even with an ISO of 1600 sports fields illuminated by lights (high school not professional) I found the lens required so much light (high effective f-stop or low transmittance) that action shots were almost impossible without blurring and multiple sequence shots were impossible. I mounted my Olympus flash which helped out to about 25 meters. I still consider the lens a good value for the money and in daylight I easily got multiple sequence shots with an ISO setting of 400.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
This lens is perfect for my system. I wanted a light long lens that I could take on hikes and on travel. This is perfect. It compliments my Olympus E510, 14-42mm and 40-150 perfectly (although I'm looking to replace the kit lenses with the 12-60mm). I can take nice, clear shots at 300mm without a tripod with no problems, except when the light gets low. Autofocus can take a while in low light, but works fairly quickly in good light. I switch to a tripod when the light gets low.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
The lens is a joy to use. It is lightweight and versatile. Mostly I use it for wildlife, but it works well for sports also. With the 300 mm maximum focal length you can really reach out to bring in the subject while the 70 mm focal length is still short enough to do a more general shot to set the scene.
The lens can be used hand held with good results. Just remember to keep the shutter speed up to avoid vibration. The lens extends to nearly double its minimum length at 300 mm, so you also need to shift your grip forward to get a good balance. Monopods and tripods are a definite plus, but the real strength of this lens is that they are not required.
I love to shoot zoo animals with this lens. Working in aperture priority mode I can shoot wide open and blur out wires, screens and meshes. Some of my finest animal photos have been done this way. Control of the depth of field also allows me to isolate my subjects.
My negatives are fairly small. The zoom ring is harder to turn than I would like, but that does help with eliminating zoom creep. The view through the viewfinder at 300 mm and f/5.6 can be really dark in low light. Sometimes I have had to shoot on faith rather than with a clear look at the subject.
Especially given the very low price, this is a great performer that is a star in my camera bag.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I wrote a review back in February after first getting the lens and shooting for a weekend. I've not had the lens for a few months and I still like the lens and what it offers and the quality of the images. The only drawback I have is when zooming in all the way, it is not easy keeping the image in focus and requires an extremely sturdy tripod. I've taken a number of shots with it on full zoom and the images appear to be blurred and not as crisp as I would like. I will continue to work with it as I have acquired an even more sturdy tripod to test with. As I stated in the earlier posting, the image quality is great and it is fantastic with macro shots.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
[...] I was outside for 5 hours trying to shoot everything from bugs to model airplanes in flight. It produces an excellent sharp image. It is lightweight enough that it can be used on the fly without a tripod. It also gives you the ability to zoom in on a subject without disturbing the scene. The only drawback I found was that it does not do well in a low light situation on it's own. It does ok with a flash though.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
A suprisingly sharp and lightweight lens. I waited sometime for this lens and wasn't disappointed. I sold off my Canon L lens to save weight with my wildnerness hiking.
The zoom is fairly tight with no zoom creep, and focuses very close..even closer with manual focus making it great for insect photography without scaring off the subject by being too close.
Since the lens doesn't have a tripod mount, its best used in combination with a small bean bag at the upper end of the focal range..placed atop a wooden plate on top of the tripod.
An excellent lens for bird photography from a blind as well.
The only negatives I would express is it's not at it's best in low light..and for fast moving, flying subjects such as waterfowl. Otherwise this Olympus 70-300 may be the perfect compromise for hiker/photographers needing to lighten their load and still get a long 600mm reach with sharp images.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
This lens is a real winner. My surf photography has stepped up to the next level with this 600mm equivalent lens. Pictures are sharp as a tack, I have success with hand held shots of quick moving surfers, but a monopod is called for at the long end when every shot counts. It is so light and small I am the only one who knows just how much reach I am really getting out of my lens. The competition is lugging around ten pounds of glass to get shots this good.

Comments about Olympus Olympus Zuiko 70mm - 300mm f/4.0-5.6 E-ED Digital Zoom Lens for the E Digital SLR System.:
I love nature photography, and one thing I hate is creeping up to the subject. With the expanded focal length (above 150mm) I can now capture what I could not before. The auto focus (button for AF or Manual) is tricky above 200mm (need a sure hand).
1st day out I was lucky enough to spot and photographed an American Bald Eagle nesting in a tree (NJ). 2nd day a Pileated Woodpecker, and the 3rd day Blue Heron and Downy Woodpecker.
All would have been disappointing without this lens, and for the Downy Woodpecker it was close to me, so I left it at 300mm and took fantastic close-ups amazing detail.
I especially like its compact size and do not need a tripod, like to take photos on the fly.
