Great product for its price. Although you have to focus manual and there is no metering (you have to use the histogram for proper exposure)I've taken wonderful shots with it, handheld (over 1/250sec)and tripod.

Doesn't work with the D45, D45X, or D60!

Comments about Pro Optic Pro-Optic 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras:

I was torn as to whether to return this thing or not - the D60 can't recognize the lens, so it's fully manual. The built-in metering doesn't work at all.... I can set an F-Stop, but on manual, with a no-CPU lens, it's ignored. I'm still experimenting with the Auto-ISO. Since I have another body here (if I can find the fool T-adapter), or it might work on my daughter's N6006, it's staying. Given the nature of a long cad lens anyway, lots of bracketing isn't a problem, and you can see how things went real fast. (A hood might be useful.)

Seems solid enough, too. I've not had a problem with the T-adapter. I've wanted one of these for years, so WTH....

But the site should indicate that NOTHING works on the D60.... (I'm not sure if the rangefinder is working or not, but the camera gives a fairly bright view anyway. Good enough for me.)

Nikon, btw, told me to buy a better camera.... However they didn't say to NOT use the thing. There have been problems with "aftermarket" lenses in these goofy mounts.

Comments about Pro Optic Pro-Optic 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras:

i used this as soon as i got hold of it. it was great having a 500mm. the shots were decent for its price. i could have made more great comments however, it was only when i detached it that i had a problem. detaching it from the camera body was already a tedious task. when i tried to unscrew the t mount, it broke into two. the screw part was left attached to the lens while i was holding on to the NIkon F mount part. then

i realized the mount is constructed in two parts. it was just being held together by three screws of some sort for which easily broke when i tried to unscrew the t mount. now its useless much to my dismay.

Comments about Pro Optic Pro-Optic 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras:

After reading the Pop Photo article I was attracted to this lens as a good addition to my Nikon 18-200 lens. The lens was mostly what I expected but the Tmount form Celestron was terrible. It was loose and did not sit well on my D90. First suprise was you can not even use M exposure on the D90. There is no indication of over or under exposure so you can choose the shutter speed, it is all trial and error.

Second big surprise is shot pix with the this lens and my 18-200 Nikon. Then cropped the Nikon shot to get the same cropping as the original uncropped 500mm shot. Surprise the Nikon cropped was better quality - sharpness, and contrast. I wasn't getting any advantage with the 500mm because what I gained in uncropped resolution I lost in contrast and sharpness.

So the lens is going back.

Great lens for quick hand-held work, although depth of field is measured in inches... I use it for hand-held shots, sometimes as slow as 1/90th sec,

I use this for distant birding shots ,portraits so far. I just recieved it today and love the power from it. very simple to use. I have the nikon d60 .just screw on adaptor, put on camera like normal lens and make sure its in manual mode. then adjust your lighting . It's very fussy with the adjustment for sharpness but I think if it was a sunny day it would be easier .It's a great option if you want to "get close" to something like birds or animals that spook easy when you get close to them. I sure am glad I got it and am waiting for a nice sunny day . WORTH THE MONEY SPENT. very simple to use.
