Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
My tripod wouldn't handle the lens and camera, so I used the lens handheld, with surprisingly good results. The image stabilization is great, my first field trip to a wildlife sanctuary, to try out this lens was a great success. Got some really great photo's at full extension.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
A friend loaned us his Canon 100-400mm L-Series lens to play with, and I've had a chance to compare it with my new Sigma 150-500mm. Here's some of the things I've observed while playing with both on my trusty Canon 20D:
Auto Focus and OS - Some web reviews have suggested that the Sigma's AF is slower and the OS noisier than the Canon's. At focal lengths beyond 250mm, I actually found the Sigma's AF to be faster and less prone to hunt, and although the OS noise was noticeable, it was no worse than the Canon's. Sigma claims that their OS is good for 4 stops. I'm guessing closer to two, as Canon claims for the 100-400mm. Not too shabby in either case, and the OS works nicely.
Sharpness - Several web reviews stated that the Canon lens produces sharper images. Up to about 300mm I couldn't tell the difference, but beyond 300mm the Sigma consistently produced sharper, crisper images. In fact, at 500mm the Sigma produced images that equaled the clarity of the Canon's at 400mm. The Canon is a superior zoom lens, so suffice to say that I'm impressed with the Sigma's performance.
Low-light limitations - Again, web reviewers favored the Canon lens, but at full zoom in low-light (indoor lighting) conditions, the Sigma focused more quickly and consistently produced sharper and brighter images than the Canon lens.
Lens creep - Sorry Sigma...Canon is the hands-down winner here by virtue of a lock ring on the lens barrel that produces a rock-solid lock at any focal length. The Sigma is nice and tight and might not creep at all, but it appears that its lock only functions at 150mm. Beyond 150mm, it appears that you have to rely on the extension mechanism and the lens's internal seals to limit lens creep.
Fit on Canon camera bodies - Several reviews that I saw described the Sigma's fit on Canon bodies as "sloppy". Mine is nice and tight, tighter in fact than either the noted Canon 100-400 or my own Canon 70-200 lens.
Size/Weight - The Sigma is a physically bigger lens, particularly at full extension, but they weigh about the same and both have excellent balance. However, either one would be a hand-held handful, so a tripod or monopod is pretty much essential for getting good, clean wobble-free long-distance shots.
Bottom line...considering the $700 price difference, the Sigma lens is a real find. It seems to equal or perhaps even better the performance of the Canon lens considered by some to be the class standard. I agonized over choice of a super zoom lens, but I'm glad I chose the Sigma.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
Have had this lens for a couple of weeks, still learning with it. But so far this lens has been everything that I have read about it. The pictures that I have taken have been sharp and the color has been outstanding. I would definitely recommend this lens. It is a heavy lens though so you should keep that in mind.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
I have only owned this lens a couple of months, but i have really enjoyed using it the limited time I have had with it. The HSM focus is very quick, quiet and consistent in good light. My lens seems at its sharpest at about 450mm and f/8.0. The OS on this lens has some quirky sounds, but I have found it to be very effective. I have not used the "pan" setting yet but the multidirectional setting is quite effective. Overall, I would say that this lens is a very good value for the massivie focal length and versatility you will find in the range of 150-500.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
This is a big, heavy lens but it has an excellent range and really delivers. I took excellent closeups of the moon hand held. that said, a tripod should be used most of the time for stability and because of the weight. The 150 to 500 range allows me to carry just three lenses and yet have continuous zoom coverage from 10 mm to 500mm. On an APS-C sensor camera that translates as 16mm to 800mm.

Used this lens twice so far: horse & cowboy shoot and birds at Bosque. Images a sharp and focus is quick. It uses a twist zoom instead of push/pull which I prefer. There is vignetting wide open which corrects easily with software. Seems well made and for me was a less expensive alternative to a Canon lens for a zoom range I don't need very often.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
Pros:
The OS is remarkably effective. You can get handheld shots at 500mm 1/200 sec if you're really careful, and practice good technique.
Fast focusing. Quiet too.
Feels really solid.
Cons:
Black finish is annoying. If you're using this lens outside in the sun for a while, the lens gets extremely hot. Telephotos should be white, because their primary use is outdoors.
I really wish it had a focus limiter, but you can manage without one.
Other:
The OS makes consistently amusing noises. It makes a "Groonk" sound when it starts up and shuts down, though it is quite quiet once it's running.
An "Enable OS" button would be nice, to so you don't have to cycle the focus to get the OS to start up.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the lens, and all my complaints are basically silly little things.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
The reviews had me convinced that this was a good product, but it has exceeded all of my expectations in every way! Sharp photos even at 500mm. When touched up in Photoshop they are even better. It IS heavy, but the extra weight is worth it to me.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
With the conversion factor this lens has some serious " reach " very " up close and personal " with anything from a Blue Bird at 15 feet to a Hawk on a limb at 50 + feet.
I admit I bought it on price , but would not hesitate to do it again on performance , very pleased .

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
It's heavy BUT love the reach of the lens. I have been taking picutes of wildlife and they don't even know I'm there. I use it on a tripod with a remote switch so I don's have any blurring. Also I just showed it to my neighbor and she is looking into the same lens.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
Love the long zoom, but all my long range (100+ yards)photos require sharpening regardless of tripod use. OS works great again handheld vs tripod doesn't matter with long range. Focus is as fast as my Canon lenses. The photos I've included have been cropped and sharpened.
150 yards handheld early morning, and cropped
