Comments about Sony Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 Standard Fixed Focal Length Lens for (alpha) DSLR Camera:
I used to own this lens prior to acquiring the Sigma 50 1.4. Have used it on the A200 & A700. Works better on A200. For the price and performance this is a must have lens for anyone starting out. IMO it def beats the Minolta 1.7. It is sharp, great colour and works great at nights. Best for portrait work. The only drawback is that the lens feels like a plastic toy. But one should not complain as this is Sony Easy Choice. Cheap and Good.

Comments about Sony Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 Standard Fixed Focal Length Lens for (alpha) DSLR Camera:
Not a bad little lens for the price. Worth every penny. As always with this type of lens DOF is really shallow, open up a little and makes for a nice portrait lens.

Bought this lens with the $25 instant rebate, so couldn't let it go at [$]. Very happy with it and works well with my A200.

Comments about Sony Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 Standard Fixed Focal Length Lens for (alpha) DSLR Camera:
- Used on a Sony Alpha 200 & 350.
- On Alpha mount cameras, this lens performs as a 75mm short telephoto. This makes it good for people pictures. If you would like to take photos of family, friends, and/or candids on the street, you will enjoy the lens. Good for serious portraits as well. While outdoor scenery photos can certainly be taken, this is not the forte of this lens length.
- The lens allows for low light photography because of the f1.8 capability. Results are sharp at all apertures, and are also reasonably sharp on the edges of the images. This same feature makes it very easy to focus on the subject, while blurring-out the background.
- After mounting, you'll notice the viewfinder becomes much brighter.
- Lens comes with built-in "hood." What actually happens is the front glass becomes recessed inside the casing of the lens. This does afford some protection from direct light hitting the lens glass. However, filters are mounted to the very front of the case, and do not recess. This makes the lens very prone to flare (see accessories below).
- Auto-focus is very fast. The front part of the casing rotates when focusing. Like all lenses, auto-focus in very low light is difficult. Switching to manual focus isn't difficult and cures the problem.
- I'm very pleased with the sharpness of images.
- Recommended accessories (filter size is 49mm):
-- RLH49, 49mm Rubber Lens Hood (filter screw-in type)
-- 66042177, B + W 49mm Digital Pro Skylight 1A Multi Coated (2C) Glass Filter (KR1.5)
-- 7072, Nikon Lens Pen (cleans lens and filters)
- For outdoors, also recommend a circular polarizer. I just got the B + W, and it's great.
-- 66017403, B + W 49mm Digital Pro Circular Polarizer Multi Coated Glass Filter
-- A49CRPLGB, Hoya 49mm Circular Polarizer Multi Coated Glass Filter
-- 49CP, Tiffen 49mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter
