I'm using this lens on a full-frame body, an EOS 5D, and enjoying it very much. Much has been said about the focus noise, but this is *not* a noisy lens at all. Focusing is quiet and fast, just not as quiet/fast as a Canon USM lens.

Both the zoom and focus dials turn opposite the direction on Canon lenses. Not much of a problem for me. The focus ring turns during autofocus. That's a bit of a surprise at first, but you soon get used to it. Build quality is adequate, not bad but not superb. The center-pinch lens cap is superior to those on Canon lenses. I don't understand why Canon hasn't adopted this design. I liked it so much I bought Tamron caps for my Canon lenses; they are much easier to use, especially with the hood on.

I've read about corner softness with this lens on full frame sensors, so I ran tests at all apertures, for the marked focal lengths of 17, 20, 24, 28, and 35mm. By "extreme corner" I mean about the outer 3/4 inch on an 8x12 print, or 3/8 inch on a 4x6 print. The following observations are for full frame sensors. Users of reduced-size sensors can expect excellent performance at all settings.

At 17, 20, and 24mm, there is significant softness at the extreme corners with the lens wide open. It improves with every stop down; by f/8 it is much better, and continues to improve down to f/16. Bear in mind I'm looking at the full-res images; in an 8x12 print the f/8 will look very good. With a normal-thickness UV filter, there is also some extreme corner vignetting at 17mm f/2.8, mostly gone at f/8. 20mm and longer do not show filter vignetting.

At 28 and 35mm the extreme corner performance is a little better, and f/5.6 delivers performance acceptable for 8x12 prints, again with sharpness continuing to improve down to f/16.

I've been using the lens a month now, and taken a lot of pictures with it. The extreme corner softness hasn't been a problem. I generally use it outside in daylight, so f/8 is fine. If you really need sharp corners wide open, you should probably go with one of the Canon L lenses; if not, this lens is an excellent compromise for a lot less money.

honestly,it gives great results!. SUPERSHARP, Strong, focus's once only. build quality is good but not superb. definately worth the cash. this made my rebel XSI come to life! image quality is as good as my prime lenses with more versatility. it will be on my camera 95% of the time. heavy, but i like that. huge 77mm filter size which means my infrared filter wont fit :(. very impressed with it and will definately stay in my collection. buy it

I plan to use for night photography, capturing lights of buildings & cars. Also, I plan use for landscape photography. So, I know this will benefit my photo skills & enhance my pictures much further than I had imagined.

When it comes down to buying a wide angle lens, this should be your choice. I certainly don't have $1500 for the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L, and for the [$]you'll spend on this, you will not be disappointed. Also, I've read reviews of this lens being "loud" while auto-focusing. C'mon, it's not that loud, and you get what you get for [$]. I SAY BUY!

This is my first wide angle lens. I love the zoom. I already own a 50mm and a 75-300mm(both canon). I really wanted the 16-35 canon lens, but got this one instead (300 bucks -vs- 1500 bucks: no brainer). The auto focus is louder than the canon usm lenses, but is not that bad at all. It takes great pictures. it feels a little heavy, which i like... doesn't have that cheapo plastic feel. I don't know why I didn't buy this lens sooner. Definately recommend to anyone!

I upgraded the original 17-55 lens of my EOS350 and finally my camera changed from night to day !!! With a little of practige is no more necessary the post production for the shots...they are pleasant without elaborations. Sharp, quick focusing, well balanced with the body.

A successful choice and high value. Sharp at all settings and angles, no CA. Useful for events and real estate shooting. At 17mm this is a standard wide angle (about 75 deg) on a 1.6-crop Canon.
