I have had this lens for about 2 months, taken a couple hundred photos, on a Canon 60D and T1i. Before that I used a Canon 17-40L. This lens is smaller, lighter, faster, and IQ is similar, although I haven't done any rigorous comparison testing. Construction is good, not quite to good as the Canon, and the lens extends when zooming, which the Canon doesn't. Also, this is a APS-C lens, not a full frame. The focus motor noise is noticeable, barely, and the focus ring rotates, which bothered me a bit at first, but not any more. This is the lens that stays on my camera most of the time. This is a really nice lens, and the price makes it even more so. I have attached a recent photo.

I'm coming from the Canon kit lens. This lens is sharp, has decent focus and I love the constant aperture.

Looking for that low-light wide angle lense? Do you need that all purpose zoom? Don't want to go broke buying two lenses though? What you get for the price of this lens will provide good image quality, good light, good price and you will probably not need to take the lens of your camera very much.

This is a great lens for shooting events and weddings, even indoors. I originally bought it to spend less time swapping primes when I didn't need an aperture greater than f/2.8, but it's now attached to my primary 50D at least 90% of the time I'm shooting. I haven't noticed any drop in sharpness from my primes at the same apertures. The included hood is a nice freebie since I didn't expect at that price point.

My only minor complaint is the noise the AF motor generates that's a bit above what all of my Canon lenses put out, but it is more than tolerable. I'd take the small amount of motor whine with the same image quality over a much higher price tag any day. The lack of IS is no problem since it's really not needed at these focal lengths, despite what the marketing departments of the lens manufacturers will tell you.

I have the TAMRON 18-270 and used to think that it was my walk about lens but in low light it wasn't so good at 3.5 but the new TAMRON 17-50 2.8 is now my all around walk about lens.I use it with my 40D and it is just perfect,the glass is as good if not better then canon and at half the price.

This is the second Tamron lens I've purchase, the first I've had to send back for warranty. It stopped zooming. BEWARE! if you have any issues, even under warranty, tamron will NOT honor your warrenty. They will find reasons to charge you for repairs.

Awesome lens,another great deal from Adorama.I traded my Tamron 28-75 2.8 for the new Tamron 17-50 2.8 [...]the lens is just perfect. The reason I made the trade was because the 28-75 was just to narrow when used with my 40d,where as the 17-50 is perfect.I've had L lenses from canon and with this new Tamron I can't tell the difference.

Very sharp lens:a definite upgradw to kit lenses.I bought mine in a kit with a Tiffen W/A filter(UV).Only problem is lens caps(I tried two different ones) won't grip the filter.

Fortunately just got a great copy, made in Japan, am very pleased. Shows quick, sharp focus in low light. Only wish it had IS, but not worth spending the extra $$$. Looking forward to seeing all it can do.

I purchased this lens soon after purchasing my Canon 50D body. I had a few lenses, but there were mainly kit and walk around lenses. This is the first lens of choice among many users and second only to the Canon 18-55 IS which is double the price. This is definitely a quality lens and reviews found on numerous forums all give it an A+. I have been pleased with the images captured so far, but have not had the opportunity to extensively use this lens. It's purpose is for portraits and family pictures where I can get in close. I also like the f/2.8 aperture so as to get creative with the DoF and also capture images in low light where a shoe mount flash would blow out the image and cause harsh shadows.

My only concern with this lens is the amount of micro adjustment (+18) that had to be applied. However, after the adjustment the images are much crisper on the edges and less of a soft focus.

I use the Tamron as a walk-around lens. It is a tad short for some good shot opportunities, but the quick and quiet focus makes up for that. It takes very clear, crisp pictures with good contrast.

I use this to replace my Canon 17-55mm Kit Lens. Good Quality for the price I pay. I've also considered the Canon f/2.8 and the similar price Sigma, but picked this one after reading lots of review online. Used this for a month now, and have no complain. The only "-" I can think of is the noise it makes while zooming, but that's something I can live with considering the hundreds I saved. If I do have the $ to spend though, I'll probably choose the Canon one since that has Stabilizer and a name brand so it may worth more if I ever have to sell it.

This lens is a great lens for anyone who can not shell out the extra money for the canon version. The lens is not as well constructed, but seems to be durable and it takes some great shots.

This lens is a good value for the money. At f/2.8 it is fast enough for most low light conditions. The background bokeh is attractive. It tens to have a soft focus below 24 mm which is attractive in portraits but not in landscapes.

I use this with my Canon 40d. This is excellent for low light wedding scenarios, very sharp pictures and vivid color quality. Money well spent. Dont waste your money on other expensive lenses.I am very satisfied with this lens.

I've tried two copies of this lens on my 40D. Focus is pretty good until I try to focus at infinity. It's not just a little soft, it's much worse than that.

I also have the Canon 60mm macro which is sharp at all distances. So I assume it's the lens and not the camera.

I got this lens and the 28-300 mm lens for everyday use and specifically for travel. Both are very light, durable, and produce very sharp images. I chose the 17-50 because of it's wide angle capability and being 2.8. It's great in low light and close-up, even hand held. For quality and price it is a great lens.

I have been using this lens for about a year now and I was always wondering if I made the right chioce. Honestly, I got it for it's price, I wanted the WA and constant aperture and couldn't afford Canon 17-55 at the time. Results were very good from the start, but still I thought it would be better with, well, more expensive glass. So, recently I purchased two L lenses and I borrowed the 17-55 and did some extensive testing. Guess what? I am keeping the Tamron, it might be noisier than Canons and has no IS, but the image quality is right there with L glass, tad less resolution in shadows and slightly different color balance, but everything else is a tie... With some unmarked samples, I actually picked Tamron over Canon. Very nice lens and the price is just great.

This lens is fantastic!!! I was looking for a clean, sharp lens with an aperture of f/2.8 and this fits the bill. I read elsewhere about the AF being on the noisey side but it is a lot quieter than I thought it would be. I guess I am just use to using 3rd party lenses. The pictures I have taken are so sharp, everyone comments on the detail this lens captures. It's great for indoor photography without using your flash and has a solid build. I only wish it was a little longer then 50mm. Other than that it is a perfect lens for a walk-around lens. I am sticking with Tamron, you just can't beat the quality for this price!
