bought this as just about the perfect lens because of range. The lens does not work with autofocus on D40 Nikon. This info is available only if you look up on Tamron site

Amazingly versatile lens!! Not quite as sharp as Nikkor glass, but what do you expect for the price? Able to cover all assignments at an air show with out changing lenses (except for a few shots with my 400--which I'm sorry I changed to. Found the autofocus a bit "flaky," but that might be due to weakness in my D100's motor, not the fault of the lens. I originally thought the manual focus ring was in an awkward position; but after shooting with it extensively I feel it is perfectly placed. Mea culpa!
