We have used this lense for years! My husband is my second shooter at weddings and can use this for the ceremony, portraits, landscapes and especially macro! The macro shots are amazing! However, he dropped this at a wedding one time and it shattered unlike other sturdier lenses. So, here we are replacing it. It's still an excellent lense for the semi-pro or amateur. Don't drop it though!

If you're looking in this price range, I'm sure you're not expecting miracles. It is slow, it is noisy, and it has fringing issues in high contrast areas. HOWEVER, the image quality is otherwise excellent for the price.

It is a nice telephoto for someone getting started without enough money to throw at the high-end stuff.

Comments about Tamron Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Auto Focus Macro Zoom Lens with Hood for Canon EOS, 6 Year USA Warranty:

The tech talk is interesting, but where the rubber meets the road this is a very good performing, satisfying telephoto mounted on my Rebel XT and 40D. In an unsophisticated test on a friend's 50D, image quality did not seem to improve suggesting a resolve up to about 10MP.

I have taken 10-thousand horse show action racing photos with sweet results from overcast to bright sunny days. The action is quick with constant zoom in/out to frame upwards of 20 shots in a 20 second race. Zoom is still tight with NO lens creep. Under AI-servo auto focus, focus might fail 1-in-200 shots, which could be the camera, instead. On a bright day, shutters from 1/2000 to 1/4000 are easily obtainable at ISO 200 and 400. Stopping down for a 1/160 shutter at ISO 200 or so allows panning the subject in focus with a blurred 'motion' background. EASY-EASY-EASY and reliable.

The focus is plenty fast enough to track a moving subject with ease. It DOES take some time to lock from full out-of-focus. The obvious answer ... pre-focus. Exposure results are HIGHLY consistent in Av and Tv modes with the occassional, correctable under-exposure. F/8 - F/11 is the clarity sweet spot producing a full moon - full manual exposure that shows STUNNING moon detail with NO visible fringing and that is about as contrasty a shot as it usually gets. I have no issues with ANY aperture/focal length setting.

Unless one makes a big living with a camera, look at my sample shots and ask if you really need to pay bigger bucks for something that might be only incrementally better. Riders are buying great looking 20x30 posters with their shots! A replacement for this lens would really have to be something special to make it worthwile.

Comments about Tamron Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Auto Focus Macro Zoom Lens with Hood for Canon EOS, 6 Year USA Warranty:

I have been using this lens on a 5D for various types of photos. The things I like about it are the fact that it is fairly lightweight for its size, the focus is sharp in most cases, and it has a macro switch.
Then there are the things I dont like, It is VERY slow and loud when in AF. The fit on the camera is not very good, when the lens is attached it feels "sloppy" for lack of a better word.
For the price it is not a bad lens and I would recommend it, BUT it would be best suited to those on a budget and beginers.

Bought this lens because of the price. It takes great pictures. While I am not a pro , I think that the shots are great. I do like the macro function of the lens. That feature is very usefull. Taking pictures of the moon at night works well with the lens also, but a tripod is needed. The auto focus works well, even at 300mm.

Comments about Tamron Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Auto Focus Macro Zoom Lens with Hood for Canon EOS, 6 Year USA Warranty:

An excellent first kit lens. The 300mm focal length on a digital camera will get you far. The Macro mode is an unexpected bonus - one you don't appreciate until you need it and discover that this lens will actually deliver it. To me, sharpness is excellent, but I am also an unskilled eye. My one quibble is that on manual the focus ring is so loose that the lens changes focus at the slightest provocation. This is a great all-purpose lens for long distance.

For the $$ [...] is a great lens (for me). Not good for action shots, the Auto focus is too slow. but if you are like me where you can compose your shot a few seconds before hand the 300 zoom is great. Lens is light weight. fits nice in my camera bag. Great addition to my Canon 50mm 1.8. All in all I love it. Yeah if I had a few more quid I'll get a Canon f2.8 L lens but this was a price/performance factor that I was looking for
