Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

Love this lens. I am a Nikon junkie so I was a little apprehensive about trying a Tokina but after reading reviews and encouragement from other photographer friends I took the leap. What a great lens and the Adorama price is very reasonable too. Love this lens for weddings and events where you really want to show the "whole scene". Highly recommend!

I read a lot of reviews before I made my choice, and having had the lens for almost a week, and taken round 150 shots, I'm absolutely comfortable with my selection. I am going to get along just fine with this lens :-). Sharp, contrasty, with good color, and a pretty decent price to boot.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

Great lens, I leave it on my D80 90% of the time.. sharp focus when stopped down some. Love the super wide angle, best with prominent subject. Takes some getting used to, distortion on edges when zoomed out (to be expected) But i will warn you that this lens does have some connection issues, ive had it for 6 months worked fine but recently it reads FEE or F95 and you have to "jiggle" the lens in order for it to work and even then its quick to stop working. Im in the process of sending it back to be looked at, i hope i just have a bad copy because i really enjoy this lens. I only gave it 4 stars and didnt recommend it because it doenst connect properly.. which is a huge problem.

I will be using this lens for wide shots at weddings and landscapes. The lens is a great bargain. I do not miss Tokina's other great wide angle lens (11-16mm f2.8). I saved at least $ 300.00 with this lens. This is a good pro lens with no lens flare and fast autofocus.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

Perfect for my needs. At less than half the price of the Nikon equivalent, the lens offers excellent image quality and seems extremely well made. I ordered it with the Adorama kit with a Tiffen UV filter which I didn't like so much. The Nikon NC Clear filter offers excellent protection and flare resistance.

As always, a pleasure doing business with Adorama.

The widest Nikon lens i've had for digital was the 18-55 VR. Wow! With this Tokina 12-24mm you can get so close that it really puts your subject "in your face". I like it! Very sharp. Very fast focus. Good dept-of-field. Seems like a good-quality, "tough" lens. I would recommend it!

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

Well my TOKINA 124 PRO was for the CANON 20D and I want to tell you that this lens is very impressive in it's construction and performance. I wanted a reasonable priced constant F/stop
Wide angle zoom lens for my CANONS that was "built like a tank" and had quality reliable optics.
The feel of the grip and weight instill confidence of the product as you handle the everyday shooting weather in the studio or field work. If I had taken the time to look at this TOKINA 124 PRO when it was first presented on the market acquiring one for both my NIKON and CANON equipment would have been a "no-brainer" as it would have been added to each setup immediately. So if you are looking for a great performing wide angle zoom that works and feels like a quality product at least try one of these on your camera before you make a "jump to conclusions" purchasing mistake. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This is a good hearty lens that is as good or better as any DX WA lens out there. The only WA lens I have seen that beats it is the Nikon 14-24... of course that lens is the best available these days. The Nikon 12-24 is a fine lens, and some consider it better than the Tokina, but I honestly can't tell the difference.

Further, focus is not a real issue on WA lenses, this is not AF-S or its equivalent; but I can tell you I have never missed a shot because of the AF. The lens just doesn't have to travel far to focus... the nature of Wide Angle lenses.

It is sharp from corner to corner from f/5.6 on and there is only minor corner focus issues wide open. Very very sharp!

It can take filters very well, but don't expect it to take standard height filters if you want to go to the wide end. I have a thin line B+W CPL that I use with it that seems to do a great job.

There is a slight distortion at 12mm, but it is very minor and easily straightened in post processing.

It is really a fun lens with Macro tubes. Mostly at 18-24mm, this is a great and fun lens.

If you have the lower end cameras such as the D40, 60, 3000 and 5000, you will need to get the newer version with an internal motor.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I debated for a while weather to get this lens or the new version II with improved coating. I have not found the lens flare to be any worse than any other lens. I did find some chromatic aberration (blue border about 1 pixel wide) on a white flower with a dark background. Not noticeable on a 8x10 print. This one of the sharpest lenses I own. It is a little heavier than my Nikon 18-200. Unless you have a D40, save the cash for a good filter as I did.

I wanted a reasonably priced lens with at least moderate speed to shoot architecture and interiors with good quality. This seems to be a well built lens and serves my needs well. I am quite satisfied with it. The 12-24 range is find for my use. I probably would buy the second series if I had it to do over to get the better lens coating but so far I have not had a problem with that aspect.

I bought this camera to extend my 18-200 Nikon lens coverage to 12-24. I was surprised by the sharpness of the lens, however I really have been spoiled by the vibration reduction provided by Nikon and have to remind myself that I need a tripod once again when shooting in low light.

I am happy with the image quality, but I was sad to discover after purchase that the lens will not autofocus on my D60. Apparently Tokina makes a "II" version of the lens that WILL autofocus.

This is my first wide-angle lens and I love the images it makes, but it is very heavy and I'm not sure if that is standard for wide-angle lenses.

This lens is very well built, and easily worth the money. Focus is very fast on my Nikon d200, and sharp enough to use with the outermost focus sensors. Zooming is smooth and manual focus is fluid and easy. Build quality is wonderful. I only wish the filter thread was metal, as putting on a filter crooked could strip the plastic filter threads. This lens is well worth the money and has allowed me to take photographs I was never able to before.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

The big debate for me was the 12-24 or the 11-16. It came down to do I want a little sharper and faster or more flexible, e.g. 17-24. Obviously for me the range won out. The lens is sharp enough at f/4 but often there will be enough light to go to f/5.6 and at that point my D80 censor would probably not record much difference even at 14mm. I was also happy to see that the f/4 seems a bit brighter than I expected and that may be the quality of the glass.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I've used my Tokina 12-24 for scenery, landscape, groups of peolpe, and I've even taken some great Christmas light pictures in the late evening. The lens is very fast to focus, and extremely sharp. At 24 mm it is useful as almost a "normal" type lens and at 12 mm is a very wide angle. I am extremely please with the Tokina brand and this lens in particular. I also own a Tokina macro lens that is excellent. Of course Nikon lenses are extremely great, but Tokina's are absolutely second choice.

I use this 12-24mm specifically for interior design photo shoots. It has less "barrel" distortion then my other 21-35mm lens.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I have been shooting wedding photography for three years now. I recently shot with a pro who does platinum weddings in Virginia and Washington, DC. He was using the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens and I got a chance to see what that lens could do. Because of the backlog on that lens I decided to purchase this one instead. I like the longer zoom range that it has. The best part is this lens really takes sharp pictures. This is a pro quality lens at a fraction of the cost of the Nikon equivalent. The construction is very solid - I feel like I am holding a pro lens. I have had it for only one day and I really love it.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

The 12mm - 24mm f/4 wide zoom lens, at a cost that's much less than the equivalent Nikon version, gives an aperture the same as the Nikon and very good results. Of course there is some chromatic aberration and distortion as well as vignetting with this lens, but the CA is fairly easily handled with Adobe Bridge-type RAW converters. The distortion issue, higher at 12mm, is due more to the wide angle nature of the genre, with little visible at 24mm. Stacking filters will heavily vignette but using a thin polarizer or other thin filter presents good results, with the vignetting more due to, again, using a wide angle lens. You can get your feet/tripod in the shot due to the wide angle too, so it's a common sense thing in a lot of ways. You might want to plan to crop modestly, or use the vignette as an effect. With a constant aperture of f/4, of course low light is a bit of liability, but you'd have that with the Nikon and pay more too. The lens is nicely responsive and has a nice wide push/pull manual focus ring. Lens flare can be a bit of problem so plan on using the hood. Overall this lens gives better results than the price might suggest, and as my first Tokina, impresses me with its quality, with the result that I'd be more willing to buy Tokina's other pro lenses.

I took the lens to Rocky Mountain National Park and it provided an excellent perspective on the mountains. It is easy and fun to use.

It is fairly heavy, and needs and sturdy tripod should you decide to use one. It is also a little fuzzy in the corners at 12mm.

Overall a great lens. Be sure to check out Tokina's 11-16mm before you buy though.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

Outstanding lens. I chose this lens based on the advice of several very knowledgeable pros who raved about it after trying it themselves. These are people who can afford any lens they want, and a lot of them preferred this lens over others in similar focal length. I still don't understand how Tokina can make this lens at the price they sell it for, but I'm not complaining - it's great. Very sharp photographs, clean and vivid contrast, relatively light weight, and most surprising to me is the stout, solid, build quality. For my general use as a street and landscape lens it has been just exactly what I needed, and I believe it competes successfully head to head with the Nikon version at a lot lower cash outlay.

I spent many months agonizing between the $1000 Nikon 12-24 or the [$] Tokina 12-24. I choose the Tokina. This is a very well built lens and very easy to use. Auto-focus is sharp and quick. If you are the type of person who enjoys taking pictures of test charts...I would imagine the Nikon would have a slight edge on sharpness. In the real world, you shouldn’t notice a difference. It’s razor sharp and well suited to architectural and landscape photography.Distortion is minimal and easy to correct in Photoshop. If you keep the camera level...there is not much correction to do.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I use my Tokina 12-24mm f/4 daily on my D2Hs for work, and it performs remarkably well!

For half the price of a replacement for my broken Nikon 12-24 AFS, it does the same work, with the same level of professional quality. Standard filters do not vignette on this lens, it is tough and made largely of metal and rubber, not plastic like other 3rd party lenses, and it is sharp as a tack! The included lens hood isn't flimsy like the one from my Nikon 18-200 AFS VR, and the lens cap is a center pinch style, so you can easily remove/replace the cap with the hood attached..

For D40/40x/60 users, it will NOT autofocus, but it will still work VERY well as a walk-around lens! Stop the aperture down to f/5.6 and manually set the focus to the hyperfocal distance of 6', and everything from 3 feet to infinity will be in focus! I use this lens with my 18-200 AFS VR for a light travel kit with my D40 and my girlfriend's D40x.

You won't find a better value on a dependable lens. For those of us with champagne taste and beer pockets, this is your lens.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I needed an excellent 12 - 24 mm lens to use on my Nikon D300. My first impulse was to buy the Nikon 12 - 24mm lens, but after reading and comparing a lot of reviews, discussion and test results, I decided to buy the Tokina 12 - 24 mm lens. All my other lenses are Nikon either D or G lenses which are all ED lenses so buying a Tokina lens was a big departure for me. I just got this lens so my review is not based on much shooting. Thanks to Adorama's very fast shipping I got this lens in only two days. I did a quick, and not very scientific, test comparison to my Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8D lens which is known to be one of Nikon's sharpest. The Tokina 12-24mm lens was very very close to the Nikkor. Each lens was set at 20mm. Only the center of the image was compared. The Nikkor was maybe a smidgen sharper but the difference is so small it’s just splitting hairs. I am sure that I will never notice a difference in print quality using the Tokina or a Nikon lens. I did no distortion comparison. At first look the Tokina appears to be a very impressive lens especially for the price.

Pretty much nothing different from what everyone else as said. Very contrasty in a good way, razor sharp, and super fast auto focus. I personally love the heavy construction of the lens. This was my first purchase of a Tokina brand lens and I'm sold on this brand. I shoot with a D200 converted to IR and a D300 and both love this lens. ONE TIP: don't get the ultra-wide angle filter, you won't be able to put the end cap on the lens. They claim without the ultra wide filter one will get significant vignetting on corners. I don't find this true with my lens/camera set up. This lens actually has less vignetting than my 18-200 at it's widest. But to sum up, this lens is worth every penny. KUDOS to Tokina for an outstanding job on this one

This lens saved me about $500 compared to Nikon 12-24. Well built and very sharp images.

The only real drawback is that it doesn't autofocus on my Nikon D40 but so what? Most of the time it's at infinity anyway so that's just a minor gripe.

You can't go wrong with this lens if you need a wide-angle zoom.

I was looking for a wide angle zoom and decided on this one after several recommendations and reading positive reviews. Price was a consideration, as It is about half the price of the Nikon lens. The Tokina is solid, fast and I am very satisfied with the results I have gotten. As pointed out in other reviews, you do have to watch for flaring, but this is a minor issue. I am using this lens with a Nikon D300.

For me this was an upgrade from the kit lenses that came with my D50 and my first wide angle lens. I love it. It seems to be well built and performs flawlessly. Small nitpicks: the lens cap is somewhat difficult to put on because the rim is so shallow. There is no white dot on the lens to align it when mounting it; you have to do it by feel. Switching between manual and auto focus means pushing a ring forward or backward which is a little stiff. None of these are big problems and I would buy this lens again.

I am an architectural photographer and this lens has become my #1 bread & butter lens. It replaces a Nikon 15mm 3.5 which was OK in its day but has always been bad about flare. I tried a 14mm Sigma but it, too flared quite a bit. The Tokina is nearly perfect: sharp, contrasty and plenty wide, I use it all day every day. My only wish is that it were a 2.8 but then it probably would be too big.

Enjoy the manual/auto control ring. You pull the ring toward you to disengage the auto focus mechanism. Crisp look of the three photos I've taken with it (shown with this review), looking forward to using this baby.

One caveat. I purchased the thin, wide angle Tiffen lens filters and the lens caps do not engage with the teeth, therefore I've got to swap out my filters every time I want to put my cap on. I got the thin version b/c of vignetting complaints on the thicker filters. Might just get a thick UV filter so I can still have the lens cap.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

The Tokina gives up very little, if anything, to the Nikon 12-24 while saving you more than half its cost. Some other brands now extend down to 10mm, and if you want the extra 2 mm, then your decision is made, but these lenses don't reach the 24mm setting.

The 2 complaints against the Tokina are that it is the heaviest lens of the ultra-wide zooms and that there is more distortion than the Nikon. I find that the extra few ounces don't really matter that much, and in use the lens balances nicely on my camera (Nikon D 200) while feeling solid in my hands. Distortion is minimized by holding the camera level and parallel to the ground, but who worries about distortion when using ultra wides? Sometimes it helps to make the image.

All things considered, The Tokina 12-24 is a fine lens at a great price.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I had no prior experience with Tokina, but after a good review in a magazine, I tried it & I would buy their products again. A lot of bang for the buck. However, there is a tendency toward corner vignetting with more than one filter.

So far I have been very happy with this lens. Good build quality and sharp images. The only thing that takes getting used to is the ring used to swith between Auto & Manual focus. Not a huge issue but it does takes some getting used to

Limited focal range of 12-24mm (18-36mm on my Nikon D200) but I am very impressed with the depth of color, lack of distortion in the corners and clarity. I am very happy with this lens.

Excellent lens. I like the fact that is faster than most and the lens speed is fixed. It is one of the three I most frequently use and is always in my camera bag.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

It took a while for me to understand this lens, as I rarely shoot wide angle. It feels well built, and I've enjoyed the sharpness, color and contrast, both outdoors and indoors with flash. I wanted this range, but my inexperience with wide-angles made me reluctant to invest in the Nikon version. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but I'm very happy with the Tokina.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I got this lens to replace my most favorite Nikor 24mm (36mm digital, BUMMER!) It has helped awaken my creative juices. A D-70 owner for only 2 months, I have just completed 2 digital workshops and am scheduled for 3 more in the next 3 months. The results are superior! I am and advanced amatuer since 1976, have six Nikor lens, a Minolta AF system, and a 4X5. I've had my own home darkroom, and went kicking & screaming into digital. I love it & Photoshop and at 77 I'm still not too old to learn!

Sharp but problems
By Percy's MomVerified Reviewer from Long Beach, CA on 9/4/2006

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This lens is a good lens for half the price of the Nikon. If you're on a budget, I would recommend it.

If, however, quality is more important, I'd steer away from it. I can't use it at 12mm because the vignetting is too great, and it is uneven (all on the right side of the frame.

At 13mm - 24mm it is a great lens.

Comments about Tokina Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This is a great piece of glass, it competes with the Nikon version in price and sharpness, the only way you should buy the nikon version is if you are a professional, the differences are very slight! Certainly not enough to pay 500 more.
