I use this primarily to keep the lens from getting banged up but it does keep some extraneous light off of the front element.

This is a high quality product, made in Japan. I also bought the same hood but made by after-market manufacture which can not be compared to the quality of the Nikon products.
Yes, it does shield from flares, but not much. I always leave it at home and prefer to cover the lens with my hand if needed.
